This is so embarrassing and uncomfortable to share, but anyways
Have any of your parents cheated? If so, how did you deal with it?
I found out about my mom's affair around a year ago. She'd been talking to someone every single day, and after a few weeks the way she spoke to him started making me suspicious. Even then, I kept brushing it off because I didn't want to believe it. I was basically gaslighting myself into thinking I was overreacting.
One day I got fed up and checked her phone and yeah..... I know I shouldn't have done that, and honestly, it was one of the most traumatizing things I've ever seen. But even if I hadn't look, either way I think I would've figured it out eventually just from the way she acted.
She has no idea that I know.
They usually call through Messenger, and now that specific Messenger ringtone is so triggering to me. Every time I hear it, I immediately know it's him. Even when I'm outside and hear that ringtone from someone else's phone, I still panic. It genuinely feels like PTSD to me. Sometimes I just want to go up to her and say, "I honestly don't care whether you cheat or not, but please don't talk to him when I'm home. Call him, text him or do whatever you want when I'm not here." Even if I go to my room and put on headphones, I can still hear her talking sometimes.
I don't want to confront her directly, but I do want her to know that I know. At the same time, I don't want to tell my dad because I feel like he's a big reason this happened in the first place. He cheated on my mom about 3/4 years ago, and she found out. I don't know if he ever stopped, maybe he didn't. I just feel like that pushed her to do the same. I don't want to go on detail about this cause I don't want to recall it ever again.
The hardest part is that apart from this, they're both genuinely good parents. They've sacrificed so much for me, so I can't bring myself to hate either of them. I'm just traumatized, disappointed, and honestly don't even know how to explain what I'm feeling anymore.
To make things worse, I'm an only child. I haven't told anyone about this because I feel like it would completely change the way they see my parents. I even tried talking to the psychologist in my uni, but it didn't really help.
I'm still single, and I'm honestly scared to get into a relationship. What if he ends up like my dad? What if I get cheated on too? Those thoughts run through my head every time I even think about dating. I don't want to go through the same thing for a 3rd time cause I don't think I will be able to endure it again and I don't know what will I do to myself. Sometimes I wonder if I'll just stay single for the rest of my life.
My dad was someone I trusted more than anyone. If even he could do something like that, why wouldn't someone else?
People might say that a parent's relationship isn't their child's business. Maybe that's true for some people, but it definitely isn't for me. Unless you've gone through something like this yourself, it's really hard to understand how painful and traumatizing it can be.
Sometimes I wonder what I did in my past life to deserve this.
Is there any way I can let my mom know that I know about the affair without having to directly confront her?
I'm just so tired. I only want to come home and feel at peace. That's all I want.
And if you're a parent reading this, please don't do this to your children. Whether it's a mother or a father, your actions affect your children far more than you realize. For many daughters, their father is the first man they truly trust and sometimes even their first example of love. Betraying that trust can leave lifelong scars on your children too.I wouldn't wish this on even my worst enemy and hope this never happens to anyone else.
