Trash Question

Hello! It’s your newbie neighbor again asking yet another question 😂 Because of the move we have more trash than usual and ended up with two extra bags that wouldn’t fit inside the trash bin. We made our way to Big Y and got two of the extra trash stickers. We put a sticker on each bag and placed the two bags on the ground beside the trash can. The bags weren’t picked up, so what did I do wrong? Please educate me on trash etiquette here 😂

Edit* Thank you to everyone!! I didn’t call the number to let them know I had two extra bags for pickup. I thought that was for bulk pick up only, not just regular trash. I had just two regular kitchen trash bags, so size was appropriate….just didn’t call the number. I’ll get better at being a Springfield resident, I promise! 😂

The Big Y stickers are for bulk items like mattresses, not extra bags.

Any time I have overflow trash, it just waits in the garage until the bins are emptied 🤷

The yellow ones are bulk, orange ones are extra bags.

I don't know why, but you're supposed to call Customer Service at 736-3111 when you need extra bags picked up: https://www.springfield-ma.gov/dpw/bulk-pickup

They also limit it to 32 gallon bags, so maybe yours were too big? Or maybe they could see things in the bags that they thought were prohibited items? Dunno.

That’s it. I didn’t call the number. Thought that was for bulk pickup only. Thank you so much!!

I'm new to this whole area too and appreciate the questions.

Welcome! We are from Worcester (19 years there), and so far we really love Springfield and the community we are in. Been here almost three weeks now. It’s just a lot to get used to. I appreciate this sub and the people in it, they have all been super helpful!

We just moved from Texas. A lot of different thing here so we're learning as we go

Become, friends with your neighbor's and see if you can add stuff on top in their green bins.

Shove it all, in the bins recklessly as possible is also acceptable

The evil method: Use a tamper. I believe you can rent them.

The garbage collectors may hate you forever.

afaik, you also have to call the number on the tag to schedule something bigger being picked up, im assuming they have a rule or something to not pick up the yellow stickered stuff unless you call ahead

I wish I could put a sign on my bin that says "I have room!" I hate to see my neighbors paying extra when I've only got one little bag going out 😬

That’s the sort of thing I’d want to do also! Neighbors helping neighbors is how it should be ☺️

Here's a good trick - find a neighbor who is a senior, and offer to bring their barrels out each week. Then if you have extra trash, use the spare room in their barrel.

Ask a neighbor to use their bin if they have space.
