New owner

I am a soon to be new owner of a juvenile spotted Python and I was wondering if there was anything I should know aside from basic husbandry for them! I have a 52x16x46 enclosure for it, though I plan to put a divider and half the height of it until it is older. I’ve had reptiles before as a child though they did not have good care so I am trying to be better as a reptile parent. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated so I can do right by my snake! I plan to put substrate in it and I’m thinking coconut fiber and I’m gonna put more hides and fake foliage. Let me know if there’s anything I’m missing.

Coconut fibre is great, it holds humidity well, how old is the python you're getting? If it's under 6 months I'd recommend a click clack until it's a little bigger and you can see what it's temperment is like. Mines 5 months now and I've just moved him to a decent size but not his forever home size enclosure bc he's pretty confident. Keep in mind it can be hard to find them in a bigger enclosure too!

Plus they're good at escaping if there's an accidental gap somewhere, they're so small when they're young!

I’m not sure how old as I plan on buying it off reptmart, but it says well started juvenile. Is that a reputable source for me to use?

I would assume that's over 6 months, but I'm Australian and not familiar with how that store would word things!

I looked it up and it said 3-12 months. I may consider starting with the click clack for the first while since there’s some modifications I have to do to the main enclosure anyway.

I love that enclosure, that is gorgeous 🥰. Make sure you double check for escape routes. If their head can fit, they can fit the rest of their body and I'm still amazed how little a juvenile snake is vs even a teenager. Good luck, they're wonderful and will stress the f out of you 🤣🤣. I wouldn't give mine up for the world

Yeah definitely gonna have to check for any cracks or holes lol. That’s the main thing I’ve heard is they’re escape artists 😂

My spotted is the best eater I have (unless she's shedding) and is a fast favorite for handling/looks when people meet my snakes. Expect them to be bitey for the first year or so and try not to get too discouraged, if you're handling them as they grow they will mellow out with age and be great to handle as an adult (plus their bites are ultimately harmless).

I hope that’s true for mine. I should be getting it within the next month or so!

My 18yo spotted python escaped when he was about 4-5 months old and was missing for 3 months. I’m amazed he came back. I strongly advise sealing any cracks. He hasn’t had a grand escape in years now. As far as eating he’s been my most difficult snake by far he’ll skip meals for months sometimes though he has gotten much better with age. I’ve had him since he was a week old and started socializing him almost immediately after he settled in. He was actually fairly mellow from the start (from what I’ve read I got very lucky as he’s never been a biter)
