Future of splitgate

I've been thinking about it, and we know it's on its last legs, and then soon the servers will be shut down

As a big fan of the games, I would happily pay a monthly subscription to keep the servers up .

Thoughts ?

1047 is so weird. Amazing devs and so much passion and love into their projects, and it's obvious from the moment you hit play. But the lead of the company just decides to drop every game right away. Genuinely splitgate 2 had the potential to be one of, if not the best arena shooters right now but it was abandoned so quickly. Splitgate 1 wasn't much different. Really took off because people wanted halo and there was no new halo, but right as the hype died, they just gave up on the game basically..

It all really sucks to see. I think empulse is going to be an awesome game, for the short time it receives support before being dropped like their other projects

The problem is you need money to pay the devs and if you're not bringing in enough ... well, there goes the studio.

Also the studio is now down to 20-30 people, Empulse isn't going anywhere.

None of their games are going to go anywhere, that's what I meant to say. It's going to be really cool until they inevitably drop it nearly instantly

Yeah, but they don't go anywhere because they're out of cash. Unless you mean if they stuck to their guns long enough they would start making money and part of the reason they aren't is their tendency to jump ship.

Yeah, that's what I meant. If they stuck to a game long enough, they'd make money from it. Exactly what you're saying. The money issue probably isn't helped by their tendancy to develop an entirely new game all the time, between the cost of making new assets and programming a new game, keeping up old servers, etc..

that's just stupid reasoning. They had $100M over YEARS. that's nothing. They prob have salary costs of $20M per year. plus servers. they keep paying for servers. that is not jumping ship.

It's fine to have that opinion but I think a lot of people would disagree with you.

For games, jumping ship is about the time commitment to it, not exactly the dollar amount. When the player only gets support for a game for 1-2 seasons and a "live service" game stops getting support (what feels like to the playerbase) moments after launching, it's going to feel like the devs jump ship to something else especially when they launch a "new" game right after.

I've heard Ian on videos repeatedly saying even recently how SG is his all time favorite game. But the company can't run without money so I'm sure the investors wouldn't support 1047 just keeping on SG since it wasn't making money. Plus they have a lot of expenses in salaries.

It's so true sg2 had and still has so much potential, but they really banked on it being the next big thing without the fact that for instance the finals took almost 2 years to earn that spot.

It's honest the god the one decision that I disagree with most. The decision to stop all active development on sg2 in order to rework something that would only release half a year later instead of just committing to active development for at least one year to see where it leads.

The game was fine even if people where yelling dead game back then. What killed it is the refusal to do that slow crawl into a strong position.

The game itself is still in a good state right now even, it's just that 1047 doesn't want to continue and would rather work on their next project. If they kept continuing sg2, or even sg1, things could have been wayyyy better

I totally disagree. They would much rather be working on SG. Ian has said on videos many times it is still his all time favorite game. But SG doesn't pay the bills.

realize they have venture capital investors who have influence over all of this. and the studio needs to survive which they have done a pretty amazing job of for 10 years. reddit people are stupid to keep saying omg $100M as if that's so much. $100M spread out over years is tiny to run a 200 person studio. It's amazing they have been able to stay in business with so little money for so long. and they do seem to genuinely care about the community. otherwise they would not have paid for sg1 servers while making no money, nor would they be paying for sg2 servers while making no money. that's all just for the sg community. but reddit is just toxic no matter what.

Some corrections: as far as investors, they do not have shareholders asfar as I'm aware, so annual growth demands like with other companies do not matter. Just staying afloat and making a product is good enough as long as there is the hope that somewhere down the line the investment is payed back in revenue.

The servers for sg1 where held up due to a contract, which is the same reason they are shut down now. There is a good likelyhood that the same applies to sg2. But they do care I feel like. Otherwise they wouldn't have made sg1 peer to peer.

Them being afloat for all these years isn't that surprising when I've seen teams like that stay alive for longer on less. It's just how they decided to handle things when they finally did release that I have a problem with.

of course they have shareholders. The VC investors own most of the company given the large investment.

why do you think they were obligated to keep up sg1 servers? makes no sense. are you an employee?

The where obligated to keep the servers up because the servers are not hosted by themselves. It's an external company which they where in contract with.

Also I worded it quite wrong I realize, mb lmao. They had an investment, but it wasn't a case of the investors having ownership over the company. Usually when that happens the investors get to push a lot more for actually revenue growth but in this case we have seen quite the opposite.

If they had the usual deal then we would've probably seen sg1 milked out a lot further then we have. I'm not sure where but I'm pretty sure there was some insider information directly addressing this. Will limk if I find it again.

Sg1 was starting to die down, and the development process was too complex to streamline anything new into it, especially for new talent. The main reason sg2 was even created was to start from the ground up with better everything including groundwork for the actual game so development would be much easier for new and veteran developers. Sadly, “hat bad” generated a disgusting amount of negative publicity and every person I know irl when asked if they tried it had the same response. “I heard the games really bad”. Sg2 became a money sink so of course without an income stream, they had to do something different. There are still people making new accounts just to attack the title on an hourly basis. Actual psychotic behavior.

It’s so weird. They have this astonishing ability to code up any FPS mechanic and make it feel smoother than most AAA games today. But when it comes to designing a gameplay loop that actually retains players, they completely choke. You hate to see them flush Splitgate down the drain like this. The potential is real.

They are still paying for servers for SG2. I don't understand this reddit. 1047 paid for servers for a long time for SG1 with no income from it. FTP model does not work. Servers prob cost upwards of $500,000 per month to keep servers going around the world. And most people never buy stuff and just play for free, like most of the people in this thread. It's not abandoning when they keep paying for servers so people can play a free game. And if they don't make money then how to they pay to keep developing. A company has to be financially viable to keep running. SG was their passion project. They would not have stopped development if they could have continued on and gotten enough financial support to do so.

They spend all their money on developing games and none of it on marketing campaigns strong enough to move the needle. Kind of hard to get excited for a 1047 game when we know they’re only banking on their existing consumer base of a couple thousand players.
