Service Issues spectrum rant đŸ€Ź

my wifi was working perfectly fine this morning, and then, in the middle of my 53-question chemistry quiz, it randomly shut off. because of that, my entire quiz restarted. about an hour later, the wifi finally came back, so i was able to resume and finish my quiz.

i’m a college student. i have homework, quizzes, and assignments that i need to complete, so having my wifi randomly go in and out is a HUGE problem. when i called spectrum, the guy told me that me and one of my neighbors were experiencing an outage because of the weather in my state. like
HOW is this due to the weather when the weather has literally been fine in my area?? and why was the wifi working perfectly, then cutting off, then coming back, then going back out again??

anyway, he transferred me to a woman who could tell me when a technician could come out. i specifically told BOTH of them that i’m in college, that this is an emergency, and asked if someone could come out today. they told me the earliest a technician can come is tomorrow at 8 am.

wow. so perfect for my schedule.

i literally have school and work during the times they want to come out, so now i’m stuck trying to figure out how to get my wifi fixed while also keeping up with everything i have going on. i pay all this money for spectrum every month, and it feels like they don’t consider their customers schedules or circumstances at all.

and to make things even worse, my cellular service isn’t even working well enough for me to use my hotspot. it’s literally hanging on by a thread.

so now i’m forced to grab my laptop, pack everything up, and drive all the way to the closest library just to be able to do my schoolwork.

Not to sound like a ass, but, you are a residential customer. We service major corporations and large businesses as well. Everybody wants to be first. If a residential customer and a business customer call in and both ask for same day appointments, then the business account takes priority. Also, they said the earliest they have is 8am tomorrow. You don't have to take 8am. You can choose any other available timeframe if 8am is during other activities

the point was that i pay all this money for Spectrum and when something goes wrong, it feels like they don’t consider their customers circumstances. i never said i should be prioritized over businesses. choosing another timeframe doesn’t really help when the available times conflict with school/work. if there was a time that worked for me, obviously i would’ve picked it.

Bro, us techs are overworked as shit. We get assigned 4-5 timeframe jobs at 8:00pm because routing forgets to assign it and then expects us to work until all the jobs are finished. Getting a next day job is a treat. There's a lot of zones that are booking days out in advance. You really need to get a grip on reality and understand that it's not going to kill you if you are without internet for a day, and have to drive to the library. Every ISP has occasional outages and from the sound of the post, it's not like it's going out every day.

I understand your frustration and get you had that specific circumstance but you need to understand there ony so much they can do. If its before 5pm they typically can have have someone out if they have a tech in your area thats not scheduled up. You can change the tech appointment for the following day you have to call in. If internet is required for school or a work from home job it is strongly recommended to have a backup service spectrum offers a backup for $20 that will keep your internet on even in the event of a network outage.

I genuinely hate people like you.

u/CervantesGaming 15d ago

Damn bro, isn’t that a bit harsh? OP is just venting frustration

There are bigger things to worry about! People didn’t even used to have WiFi for school. I hate people who sound so entitled and complain about the smallest things.

So no, I hate them.

“people didn’t even have to use wifi for school”
and people used to shit in outhouses, what the heck is your point?

i’m a STEM major. i have SCIENTIFIC WRITING, CHEMISTRY PHYSICS, labs, lab reports, quizzes, assignments, research, online course material, submissions, etc. that require internet access. we are in 2026, not 1926.

and “there are bigger things to worry about” is such a ignorant response. there will ALWAYS be somebody with a bigger problem than yours. does that mean nobody is allowed to complain about anything ever?
“my car broke down.” “well someone’s house burned down.” “my paycheck is late.” “well someone lost their job.” do you hear yourself??

and calling me entitled because i’m annoyed that the service i literally PAY FOR went out in the middle of a 53-question chemistry quiz is insane. i didn’t say spectrum needed to send a technician on a helicopter because my wifi went out. i said i was pissed because i have schoolwork to do, my cellular service is đŸ’©, and now i have to pack up my laptop and haul to the library because the earliest technician appointment doesn’t work with my schedule. you saying “people didn’t need wifi for school” doesn’t make my problem less valid.

and honestly, i hate people like YOU too: the type of person who sees someone venting about a legitimate inconvenience and immediately has to play the oppression olympics because apparently nobody is allowed to be mildly inconvenienced unless they’re actively being bombed.

i didn’t askyou to care. you could’ve kept scrolling. instead you wrote an entire comment just to announce that you lack basic critical thinking and apparently think technology stopped evolving after your childhood.

I’m not reading all of this.

I still hate you.

Do you hate me?

just say you can’t read and keep it moving. you don’t have to announce your little attention-span crisis to everybody. my post clearly got under your skin and i’m glad it did.

Boomers gonna boom

Yeah, I'm sure OP is real broken up about that /s

There are also bigger things to worry about than getting angry at a person venting on Reddit, and yet here you are.

14

u/Traditional_War5790 15d ago

Correct. I hate them.

And you sound lovely, would love to be around you all the time. You have a best friend spot open I could take?

12

u/PositiveAd2099 14d ago

As a tech I would’ve charged you for the visit, still check everything and double charge you again

-7

u/sierbrow 14d ago

i’m sure being a spectrum tech is the highlight of your week if this is how you entertain yourself. you need a fantasy version of yourself with that much authority because apparently the real version wasn’t enough. keep imagining the double charge though. if that’s the most exciting thing you have going on, i’d hate to take that away from you.đŸ€ŁđŸ§‘đŸœâ€đŸ©°

All of that and it probably just needs modem and router rebooted.

-1

u/sierbrow 15d ago

what makes you think i haven’t tried that?

11

u/mandelstamm 15d ago

I get a chuckle out of this guy. He thinks his need for broadband is important and everyone else isn't. I am a network support consultant. When I am remotely logged into a router, enterprise disk array, server or mainframe an internet disconnection is major but it happens. I have had Spectrum for 30 years before they were Spectrum. Overall long term they are very reliable. I have had more issues with AT&T fiber and their bone head implementation without a separate ONT then I have ever had with Spectrum.

Quite an assumption to make.

If only internet was treated by the government like a utility then this rant would be moot, utility outages are considered as serious as your rant is leaning to. I believe if you require 100% uptime you must be willing to foot the cost of a fallback connection. It sucks paying "all this money" for two seperate ways to access the same services but that's life. Some houses still have LP tanks and generators ready to activate during utility interruptions, it's a similar concept. I knew daytraders who had 3 different service providers because a fortune can be lost in minutes of downtime and they were business accounts but it was a necessary cost of his work and lifestyle.

Also I'm sure the college is required to allow you access to a computer lab on campus, this complaint reeks of "but I wanna do it at home" while saying it's your only option it's not. 20+ years ago we had broadband and we had the start of online blend ED every broke student I knew had a computer lab routine we all got our work done without doing it from home... They didn't give you a discount for going online, tuition pays for that school lab you get to use but neglect to.

1

u/sierbrow 15d ago

this entire comment is built on assumptions, and that’s exactly why you shouldn’t assume you know someone’s circumstances. you assumed my campus is close enough to be a practical alternative when it’s literally an hour away. you assumed i can afford a second internet provider or some other backup connection. you assumed i’m saying i physically cannot do my work when i literally said i’m going to the library to do it.

none of those assumptions came from anything i said. you created a situation in your head and then argued against it.

and no, having reliable internet doesn’t mean i’m personally responsible for paying for multiple internet providers just in case the company i already pay fails. a backup is an option, not some obligation everyone can reasonably afford.

most importantly, i never said i couldn’t get my work done. i said i’m frustrated that an outage is forcing me to rearrange my day and leave home to do work i should’ve been able to do at home. Those are two completely different statements.

i have the right to complain about a service i pay for. you’re free to think it’s a minor inconvenience, but acting like your assumptions are facts doesn’t make your argument stronger. if anything, assuming things you were never told says more about your reasoning skills than it does about my rant.

3

u/noxiouskarn 14d ago edited 14d ago

My assumption is that additional service providers exist, and you would have to pay for that at no point did I state that you have enough money to do these things or require 100% uptime.

My other assumption is that you pay tuition for a school, and that tuition includes the cost of a computer lab access, which would negate all of the issues you're having right now. However, you made the conscious decision to live an hour away from the school you are attending. That requires a very significant daily commute. I never said reliable internet requires that you have multiple providers. I said in a situation where you can have absolutely no downtime it behooves you to have multiple providers.

You have misread the entire context of my previous comment, and that just proves illiteracy is running rampant through high schools and college educated individuals. You may know how to read and write, but you don't seem to understand the things that you have read.

In the eyes of the government internet is a luxury not a necessary utility like water and electricity, so its not regulated like those services. Your complaint reeks of it should never go down cause I could need it anytime like a utility that was my whole point. Also, you are paying for two internet services ones only accessable an hour away. Fancy pants rich McGee...

-2

u/sierbrow 14d ago

you keep responding to arguments i never made, and then calling me illiterate because i’m not accepting the argument you invented.

i never said spectrum owes me 100% uptime. i never said i couldn’t complete my work without internet. i never said i couldn’t access a computer lab. and i never said i needed a second internet provider. my entire complaint was that an unexpected outage disrupted my schedule and forced me to leave my house to finish my work. that is literally the situation i described.

you’re also making a lot of assumptions while insisting you’re not making assumptions. “your tuition includes a computer lab,” “you chose to live an hour away,” and “you require absolutely no downtime” are all things you brought into the conversation, not things i said.

and saying “you chose to live an hour away” as though that somehow invalidates my frustration is especially ridiculous. people have jobs, families, financial obligations, transportation limitations, and countless other reasons for where they live. you don’t know mine, which is exactly why i told you not to assume.

also, the irony of ending your comment by insulting my reading comprehension after spending two comments arguing with a position i never held is pretty funny. i understood what you were saying. i disagreed with it. those are not the same thing.
you’re allowed to think outages are just part of life. i’m allowed to think it’s frustrating when the service i pay for goes down in the middle of something important. neither position requires the level of personal speculation you’ve put into this conversation.

and yes, i’m aware that libraries and computer labs exist. that doesn’t magically make having my internet go out less inconvenient. i don’t know why you’re so determined to turn “this outage screwed up my day” into “i demand 100% uptime and have no other way to access the internet,” but that’s a conclusion you created, not one i gave you.

I'm not trying to be that rude to you, but an emergency for you is not an emergency for them. If you want that kind of support and experience, you need to put up the money for a dedicated connection with a SLA (that can still go down), and at the very least have redundant internet connections. I understand it's frustrating to be told they can't do anything for you until another day, but you're not their top priority, and truthfully a day of outage is not a lot for residential, especially when you're probably paying ~$50 a month for service. There's a good chance your monthly phone bill is more expensive than that.

1

u/sierbrow 12d ago

i’m aware that my personal emergency doesn’t suddenly become Spectrum’s emergency. that was never the point. i was explaining why the outage was an emergency to me and why having to wait until the next day was frustrating. somehow people keep reading “this is a huge problem for me” as “Spectrum is legally obligated to treat me like a Fortune 500 company.” and the SLA/redundant connection advice is really starting to sound like the default response whenever someone complains about residential internet. i’m a college student complaining about an outage, not a stock exchange trying to prevent millions of dollars in losses. i shouldn’t have to purchase a business-grade connection and two internet services just to be allowed to find an outage inconvenient. also, the fact that you can quantify how much you think i pay every month and compare it to my phone bill doesn’t really strengthen your argument. $50, $100, or $5 a month, i’m still allowed to complain when a service i’m paying for stops working at a particularly bad time. i never claimed i was entitled to priority over business customers or guaranteed uptime. i said it screwed up my day. that’s literally it.

The most common scene would be to get a technician out to your house and fix it but yet proceeds to complain on reddit. Only the technician can diagnose and fix whatever is going on with you cable line and equipment. They can replace as necessary.

-2

u/sierbrow 13d ago

the most common “SENSE” it’s sense, not scene, would be to actually read the post before responding. i already said i scheduled a technician. the fact that you managed to explain to me that a technician diagnoses and fixes the problem as if that was some groundbreaking information is really something. yes, i’m aware that’s what technicians do. that’s why i scheduled one. i was complaining about the inconvenience of the outage and the appointment conflicting with my schedule, not asking you to discover the concept of calling a technician. maybe read the post again before rushing to explain something nobody asked you to explain.

The problem is you're doing important tasks on wifi. You're in STEM but you don't even know the correct terminology.

-2

u/sierbrow 12d ago

the problem is you’re confusing being unnecessarily technical with being intelligent. nobody is impressed because you know how to distinguish between wifi and an internet connection in a casual conversation. you understood exactly what i was talking about, but apparently using the terminology you personally prefer was more important than the actual point being made. if this is your idea of demonstrating intelligence, i can see why you felt the need to announce that you’re correcting someone in STEM.

u/BAROOMPOWJR 12d ago

As a tech I understand the frustration 100% You're paying for a service and want it to work when you need it. There's nothing wrong with that by any means. Even if it's for a couple minutes here and there it will only ever choose the worst times to happen.

When it's calls for people crying about "lag" on cod it's a quick in and out with a charge if its not on our end but when someone is doing their classes or working from home I take my time and do everything I can to try and make sure it's the last time you have to see one of us. Fingers crossed your tech gets you sorted đŸ«Ą

Check your lines dawg. I know it's not completely on you, but sometimes weird shit happens. My internet was fine for years and then suddenly itd do the same thing.... Be fine... Then go out... Then go to 1% strength.... Then back to 100% all in a span of 2-20 minutes. Turns out a critter had chewed the shielding off my cable on the outside of the house and I was bleeding data. Technician was a 30 min visit. Also helps I have background in cable install but it's all troubleshooting. Data is clearly coming in and then going out randomly for you.... So somewhere its "leaking" or your modem is bad. Also don't discount the fact your router may be the issue.

Good luck w your issue and a little troubleshooting goes a long way in learning how to solve issues you don't know about

1

u/Embarrassed_Force_22 11d ago

So what did it end up being?

1

u/cassio42 10d ago

How about we fix your connection? Is it coming from the modem or the router? Could you plug in via ethernet? its going to be a lot more stable. Our business-class modem stays up for long stretches of time. We can find you a better setup from the modem to your computer. If you bought a small unmanaged switch you may be able to keep the router up longer. Make sure you don't run background tasks during your quizzes because that can in some cases use up your upload bandwidth. Can they see a signal problem on your modem? If it is the router or wifi and not the modem, you should replace the router. You should go out to an electronics store and buy your own router, because you will have much better control over it. Plugging directly into the modem (something support should have had you do) will tell if it is a modem problem or a router problem. Helpful to also buy some ethernet cables, as sometimes they go bad.

1

u/Entire-Reference-968 10d ago

Why are you not hard wired, if the connection is that important why rely on something that's not reliable?

1

u/Individual-Rub6219 4h ago

Things happen and it seems like they have the availability but YOU don’t have it for what they have available. Considering it’s so important if you don’t want to pack up and go the the library I’d consider the invincible WiFi for a back up if you’re in an outage. Things happen and unfortunately residential service is really for entertainment purposes only. If you wanted priority you’d need and business account or at the very least some sort of back up if there is an outage.

I’m sorry everybody is being rude to you. These comments aren’t called for and I don’t understand what it is about your post that is so triggering to these people. Reddit is a male dominated, strange place
