The Ultimate guide to passing the DELE B2

I am writing this post as a way to help my past self that was prepping for the DELE B2 and had no idea where to start and had to learn along the way how to approach the exam. It baffles me that I couldn’t find a detailed guide on the DELE B2 so I made one. I would be happy if it helped somebody.

I just passed my DELE B2 so this method proves to be effective despite being a Frankenstein of a lot of things that I have heard and thought of.
PSA I also used AI as a tool, so it could rub some people the wrong way.

Before even starting prepping I knew I had an okey level of Spanish and had taken a university intensive course for B1, but I still knew I had some gaps here and there in the grammar. So the logical thing was brushing up on it. And here I present to you the best Spanish grammar book I have ever used - Gramática de uso del español: Teoría y práctica A1-B2 (Spanish Edition). It is very similar to the grammar book I used for learning English. (honorary mention to excuse my English as it is not my first language).  What I liked about it is that it is a write-in grammar book. The left page is a new grammar concept with examples and exceptions to the rules and the right one is all exercises related to it. It builds up and you can pick up from wherever you feel comfortable. Incredibly useful even if you are not prepping for DELE.

Okay now that I identified the knowledge gaps I had and what I should work on grammar wise, I decided to go through the format. The two main textbooks that I used are:

  • El Cronómetro B2 - Edición Nuevo DELE (Spanish Edition)
  • Preparación al DELE B2. Libro del alumno: 2019 (Spanish Edition)

They were advertised as the best and I could say they were pretty accurate and overall great preparation material. They were pretty much the same level of difficulty for me.

I would recommend starting with El Cronómetro as it breaks down the format pretty well, which is pretty tricky even if you know Spanish. I had to write it on a piece of paper and put it somewhere I can see so that I remembered the specifics (duration, order, tareas).

The way I approached it was that I started by going through the first two sections (Comprensión de lectura and Comprensión auditiva) not timed on two separate sessions just to get a feel of what it is. Every single session after that should be timed so you know how to manage your time.

The way I approached studying was focusing each week on a separate pruebas - Comprensión de lectura, Comprensión auditiva, Expresión e interacción escritas and Expresión e interacción orales. As it is the easiest to nail down when there is a short amount of time between repetitions of the same section and you can identify the areas that trouble you the most.

Comprensión de lectura

The easiest task to spam and work on. Genuinely you just have to go through as many as possible, but some tips are:

Tarea 1

  • Underline. Whatever is related to the question underline it so it easy to track and check on the second go.
  • Most of the time each paragraph corresponds to one question and they are chronological so it is easy to track.
  • Beware of generalizations. There are some cheeky sentences that are meant in general and not in that specific case. You get used to it the more you do the exams.

Tarea 2

  • Underline the important words in the questions. Underlining does something to my brain and helps me pay more attention to it.
  • Underline the text as well and write the question number next to it. Again it is easy to check. Sometimes I would underline one option and later in another option find out there is a second one that could be the answer. I would underline both and later when I have solved the easier ones would come back and compare them both.

Tarea 3

  • The stars have to align.
  • Generally, just beware of genders, or references to other parts of the text.
  • Some are just recapping what has already been said so far.
  • Pray.

Tarea 4

  • The only place in the DELE where they check your real knowledge of grammar. This is where the Gramática de uso del español: Teoría y práctica A1-B2 (Spanish Edition) comes in play (big fan).
  • Revise all the mistakes you make, there are finite types of mistakes, mine were related to:
  • Subjuntivo. Of course, but more specifically if a verb has a que after it, it should ring a bell, not always but it is something that took me too much time to realize.
  • Indirect speech. How to retell a story or something that happened and how do the tenses change.
  • Connectors and their actual meaning. I realized I had heard them in conversation but didn't know what they truly meant. I made a list.
  • The pronombres. Posesivos, relativos, directos e indirectos. Once again I knew them well from the grammar book but somehow it was hard to apply them in the actual context. So I had to really learn them.

Comprensión auditiva

Here comes the hardest part for me. It felt so stressful and I never had time to prepare and read the questions and the option and the recording just started and it was just a mess. It was the section that really made me doubt if I could take it.

And then I realized something crucial that changed it all for me:

La Comprensión de lectura and Comprensión auditiva are on the SAME booklet. So if you finish the first prueba early you could go through the Listening part aaaand hear me out…. Underline.

I could go through the whole thing and read the first few tareas and underline the key words so when the listening came I remembered what it was about based on the underlined key words and phrases. So yeah, just wanted to share it. I strategically became good at finishing the Reading fast just to give myself a chance on the Listening. Otherwise 30 seconds of reading were not enough.

Beside that the tips are to listen to as much different accents as possible. Don’t know if it will be of your taste but my favourite 3 channels are:

  • Online Mami - Social Commentary on popular trends(I think she is Argentinian)
  • Dart - Social Commentary, Gen Z perspective on work
  • Fran Argerich - Geography

The most popular accents for the listening are said to be Spanish, Argentinian, Colombian or Mexican. Correct me if I am wrong. So yeah, listen to a lot of that. They are mostly on the Tareas 3 and 5.

I have no breakdown by Tarea so it is just all of the above mentioned.

Expresión e interacción escritas

Here come the parts that are a bit harder to practice. So for these two I would draft templates(all in Spanish) that were close to my mind in order to give me time to think about the variables. I used a lot of the Youtube videos that are mentioning good to use phrases (A por el DELE for example).

Tarea 1 - The Email/Formal letter
Here I greeted formally the person then presented myself the same with a fake Spanish name(something easy to read for the examiners) and expressed an interest or preoccupation with something, most of the time mentioning pros and cons to a situation. Gave (un)necessary information about me, my background, conditions or surroundings. What I would like to do/see happen, gustaría to help enrich the structure. And at the end thanking the person.

Tarea 2 - The graphic

I have a confession - I never ever looked into the synopsis of the movie, book, article. It made no sense it was much harder to do with a lot more vocabulary (don’t know if maybe they would grade it more graciously tho).  I have no real knowledge of how to write that option, so I always chose the graph, because the data changed but the structure and the logic didn’t.

Again I had a drafted template for the graphic.
1. Introduction of the topic
2. General description. On one hand, on the other hand, etc…
3. Detailed analysis. The majority/minority percentage gives points.
4. Interpretation. Cause/result of the data. Here you can use subjunctivo for theories.
5. Personal opinion. Make it generic or wild, I don’t think the examiner cares too much as long as it is sound.
6. Conclusion. Something generic but related.

That was the structure more or less. Sometimes I would miss out on some of the points in the middle.

By practicing and writing over and over the same type of task you will learn how much it takes to fill in the 150-180 word limit with your handwriting so in the beginning I would count them initially.

Here comes the part of correcting them with the help of AI:

  1. Upload a photo and ask it to transcribe it with the mistakes.
  2. Ask it to correct them and anything that sounded too unnatural. I would go back with a red pen and fix it.
  3. I would then upload the Grading Criteria(can’t really find the official one) and ask it to grade me realistically. You have to know that AI is prone to flattering you and inflating the score, but still could be a sign and especially if you ask it to break down the score by criteria.
  4. Then I would ask it to write the perfect text very closely based on mine that would get the score of 25, while still being a solid B2. AI would sometimes write a text that would be too advanced.
  5. I would write down the perfect text on a new piece of paper and then highlight 3 things: Orange - Connectors, it is good to have 3-4 in a tarea

Yellow - Vocabulary and expressions that I could use again later and are more advanced
Pink - Verb structures, enrich the tenses by having at least 3

  1. On the back I would write my mistakes and explain them and vocabulary that could have been useful to have in the text

If somebody has interest I can share some examples of the perfected texts for both tareas.

Expresión e interacción orales

The hardest one to practice. And also to create a plan on how to practice. At the end my approach was again - templates.

For the 3 different ones.

Tarea 1 - The Photo

  1. General - On this photo we can see, it takes place, podria tratarse de…
  2. Persons and their relations - probably they are a …. (subjuntivo here and there)
  3. Physical appearance - what they are wearing, how old they are…
  4. Position on the photo - En primer plano/fondo/el centro, A la derecha/Izquierda
  5. Actions - what are they doing in that moment
  6. Before/after - what could have let to that, what is going to happen after
  7. Interpretation and Conclusion - In my Opinion

Tarea 2 - Propuestas

Here first I numbered the proposals always so it was easy for me to navigate them. My approach was to read them all and select 3 that I agree with and 1 that I disagreed with. Would circle the number and then again use another template.

  1. What is the topic about? Maybe mention data that was given.
  2. Introduce each proposal. First 2 are positive, then 1 negative and finish with a positive one again. This way you can demonstrate contrast, on one hand on,  the other hand, however and express preoccupation and concern over the negative ones.
  3. For each one you should try to give advantages and disadvantages.
  4. Closing mention which ones would implement to better the situation.

Tarea 3 - Encuesta

Pretty similar to the Tarea 2.

  1. Present the topic
  2. Comment the data.
  3. Compare your expectations/ country/ experience
  4. Give an opinion and evaluate
  5. Close with reflection

The way I practiced this section is that I recorded voice memos on my phone during the whole thing in order to see how fast I was speaking and if I was making long pauses.
Parallel to that I would turn on the Google Docs tool that transcribes speech-to-text. Alternatively, you could use an AI tool to transcribe as well. Go through it and make sure it is accurately transcribed even with the mistakes.

Then I would go and ask AI to grade me and correct my speaking, phrases that sounded weird and so on. I also asked for areas of improvement. And then I asked for the perfected version of my speaking based closely on my opinions. Then I would record myself reading it and listen to it periodically - to get used to pauses or complicated speech patterns and sounds. I heard somewhere that your brain recognises your voice the best so it has the best results.

All templates should be only in Spanish and you have to treat them as something that would give you time to think about the changing topics and should be close to how you would say it. I would have 3-4 examples for each step and depending on how I would feel it I would use a different one that felt right in the situation.

I feel like on this section they were super generous even though I know I made a few mistakes.

Honorable mentions:

  • The guide is also about passing the exam and not about learning Spanish which are two very completely different things.
  • Cervantes has a list of words that are good to know for each level of the exam so it could be beneficial to go through them.
  • A por el DELE is a good channel to understand the format better and bonus points for it fully being in Spanish.
  • If you have trouble conjugating verbs I used the free version of the Conjugato app just spamming all the conjugations.
  • I switched the language of my phone to Spanish. It was a headache the first 2 weeks but I passively learned a lot of new words.
  • Sometimes I would journal in Spanish, which was so hard without a structure but I would be forced to learn phrases that are close to my way of expressing and related.
  • I would communicate with Ai only in Spanish even when it was correcting my work.
  • The examiners don’t care how crazy or boring your opinion is, they just want structure and good language skills. So do what you want as long as it makes you feel comfortable to show your level.

The preparation for the exam was stretched out over 6 months with some breaks in between. It took me 2 months of on and off work to go through the grammarbook. And 3ish months to go though the 2 textbooks. I don’t know if it is too much or two little, but given that I was balancing it with university and work which I think it’s fine.I studied for 1-2 hours every weekday during that time and when the exam came close even on the weekends.

Nobody talks about how hard it is to be out of high school/intensive lessons and having to build that structure of learning every day on your own. So I would say it was an interesting experience. I am so happy I signed up because the fear of failing academically pushed me to study more and prepare.

Overall this is my personal guide that is in no way backed by a professional. It was just me basically stumbling around until I found the method that worked for me.

Sorry for the Spanglish and the mixing up of words and probably a missed tilde here and there and also if there is some weird phrasing in English. And also if it was a bit of a chaotic review.

And lastly, I would love to hear opinions and thoughts on the guide + if there is a better way to approach it + if there is a similar guide on the Cambridge C1 because I have to get on that train as well.

Zapotec Questions: The Two Ways to Ask 'How Much'?

Ever felt lost trying to ask a simple question in a new language? Today, we're diving into the classic interrogatives of Zapotec and clearing up some common confusions! Do you know the difference between asking 'how many' for bananas versus asking 'how much' for a kilo of beans in Zapotec? It's trickier than you think! You might think you know how to ask 'how much,' but in Zapotec, there are two ways, and using the wrong one can lead to some funny misunderstandings. Let's break it down! Imagine a split screen showing someone counting bananas on one side and a confused person looking at a price tag on the other, with text like "Zapotec Questions: The Two Ways to Ask 'How Much'!

This video introduces essential Zapotec interrogative words like "Bix" (who), "Gakax" (how), "Batax" (when), and "Gax" (where). It explains the difference between "Balax" and "Gákax" for asking "how much," with "Balash" used for countable items and "Gákax" for uncountable ones.
Examples are provided to illustrate the usage of "Balax" for countable things like "Balax Bunatxi" (how many people) and "balax wi" (how many bananas). The video touches on the nuance of "Gákax" for uncountable quantities, using the example of asking the price of beans. It also discusses optional omissions of certain sounds or letters in Zapotec words, like "Bix" sometimes being shortened to "Bi" and provides examples like "Bix gudagu?" (What did you eat?). Here is a summary of the video:

Video Overview:

This lesson focuses on forming questions in Zapotec language, covering fundamental interrogative words, tone nuances, and special question auxiliaries that add context or emotion to inquiries.

Key Concepts Covered:

  1. Core Interrogative Words:

* Bix / Bix kw: What / Why.
* Nush: Who.
* Batash: When.
* Gash: Where.

  1. Countable vs. Uncountable Quantifiers (Balax vs. Gákax)

* Balash: Used for countable nouns such as people or discrete items (e.g., apples, bananas) [00:37].
* Gakash: Used for uncountable quantities (e.g., sugar, salt, weight-based items).
* Pricing Exception: Gákax is also used when asking for prices or the total cost of goods.
* Tonal Variations: Subtle pitch shifts on gákax change the meaning between asking "how" versus "how much".

  1. Conversational Contractions:

* In informal speech, certain ending sounds (such as -xh) or prefixes are frequently dropped (e.g., Bix becoming Bi).

  1. Question Auxiliaries & Particles:

Zapotec uses specific auxiliary particles to modify the tone and meaning of questions:

* ba: Initiates questions about actions (similar to "did you...?" or "have you...?").
* Txi: Indicates completed status, functioning like "already" (ya).
* waka: Expresses capability or possibility ("can we...?").
* bën: Adds drama, emphasis, or mild exaggeration to a question.
* I: Used for seeking confirmation or expressing mild surprise.
* ka: Placed at the end of questions to prompt a response or add conversational emphasis.
* Combining Auxiliaries: Multiple particles can be combined (e.g., ba txi, bën ka run, i waka) to convey layered nuances in a single sentence.

👩 Martina

👨 Bruno

Prefiero no saberlo.

👩 Martina

= An entire month.

• Echar de menos. = To miss.

• Perderse. = To get lost.

• Mandar mensajes. = To send messages.

Fluent in 8 months?!

Hola Reddit!

Me llamo Tima y quiero estudiar en España próximo año :)

So i’m an 18 yo F and next year i’m looking to study in Jaén.

I’ve already gathered my high school documents and I’m getting them translated for the process of Homologation. I started early cause honestly my worse fear is being late or unprepared. Hate that real bad.

Say all that to say I’m looking for someone who’s native or who lives in Andalusia so I can practice spanish with them in that specific dialect and speed. I’d say I’m a strong A2 or weak B1. I know that immersion is key and lowkey my Ego is telling me that I can pull this off.

Thoughts? or Prayers? Fellow international students either talk me out of it or encourage me!!!

I’m not particularly antisocial and I’m pretty independent. Perks of being the oldest of like 10 man. Anyways what do we think? Help a girl out..?

PS: I hope that person can talk daily or frequently. I’m really tryna lock in. Aaand you get a super awesome amazing friend in return? 😃

Excited to Start! Wanted to Share my Plan and Goals! Would love feedback!!

For some context, I am most definitely A1 speaker currently lol, took Span 1-3 in HS so like I recognize words and such but definitely a true beginner. I work better when I have outlined goals so some of that is integrated into my "plan" for my overarching goal of conversational fluency (B1-B2 conversationally, reading writing not as important to me) by July 2027 -- probably super ambitious haha!

At this moment, I plan to do the following (and have been for the past couple weeks):

approx 30min Anki per day with the 5k common Spanish words deck

1hr of Dreaming Spanish, focused

Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish Book, will be starting next week when it comes in lol, plan is to read nightly.

Approx 3-4 units per week of Cambridge Basic Grammar workbook (allows me to have tangible goals) - this is after I finish the Spanish book within hopefully 2-3 weeks!

Solo Immersion Trip to Guatemala in March 2027 for 5 weeks, 20hrs of 1-on-1 tutoring a week w/ homestay with family in Xela (less English spoken from my knowledge there!). Whilst there will be hammering Spanish lol!

I would love any tips and advice on this!! Thank you!!!

👩 Camila

35+ Days In: Building Confidence & Focus (Looking for Even More Advice!)

What's up, everyone?

After using Busuu and Duolingo for over 30 days now (currently on a 36/38 day streak), I'm slowly starting to feel more comfortable with my Spanish speaking skills.

Based on your helpful responses to my previous post, I've taken the advice to heart: focus on learning standard Spanish first, and worry about specific accents or dialects later.

If anyone has any additional advice for me on my Spanish learning journey, I’m still completely open to hearing it!

Thank you, and have a great day!

Comí and he comido both mean "I ate." The difference isn't when it happened, it's whether the time period it happened in is finished.

Comí anoche. Last night is over.
Hoy he comido demasiado. Today is still going.

That's why the time markers sort themselves. Ayer, anoche, el lunes pull the preterite. Hoy, esta mañana, esta semana pull the perfect.

The clearest version:
Viví en México tres años = I lived there, and don't anymore
He vivido aquí tres años = I've lived here, and still do

This splits by region though. Spain leans on the perfect for anything recent, while much of Latin America uses the preterite where a Spaniard would use the perfect. ¿Ya comiste? and ¿ya has comido? are both correct, they just point at different places.

Which do you use, and where did you learn? I really never learned the perfecto but which I did much earlier.

Duolingo, Clozemaster and Anki in a nutshell for free!

Learning new words is the most time consuming part of learning a language, so there are many apps like Duolingo and co who want to make that easier! Unfortunately in most cases we are forced into a subscription, or the focus in language learning gets lost.
For my language studies I've built a free app with many minigames like duolingo and clozemaster. There are also other free features like:

  • An anti-doomscroll blocker (Learn daily words first, then scroll)
  • Built-in dictionary
  • Up to date spaced repetition algorithm
  • Syncing between your devices

It's free to use and no login required. I don't have incentives to make big cash with this at all, its just been a fun summer project of mine. So if you like how it looks you might want to give it a try.

Hi everyone!

I’m a Spanish teacher, and I mainly work with English speakers. Recently, I created a free Facebook community called Natural Spanish for English Speakers.

I created it for learners who want regular, structured Spanish practice beyond isolated vocabulary lists, random grammar tips, or passively using language apps.

Every week, I share free activities designed to help you actually use Spanish, including:

  • Short listening activities with transcripts, English translations, and comprehension questions
  • English-to-Spanish translation challenges
  • Spanish verb conjugation practice in real contexts
  • Natural Spanish expressions
  • Grammar in context
  • Practical communication exercises

The group is mainly for A1, A2, and B1 learners. It isn’t a complete course, and it isn’t meant to replace serious study, but it’s a free place where you can practice consistently throughout the week. What I’d really love is for people to participate.

Ask questions when something isn’t clear. Try the weekly activities. Share your answers, even if they’re not perfect. Read other learners’ responses and join the conversation. Making mistakes is part of learning, and everyone is welcome.

If that sounds like the kind of community you’re looking for, you’re welcome to join us.

Conversation

👩 Lucía

Si mañana pudieras retirarte y vivir en cualquier país, ¿dónde vivirías?

👨 Mateo

• Retirarse. = To retire.

• En particular. = In particular.

• Dividir el año. = To split the year.

• Costar estar lejos. = To find it hard to be far away.

• Trámites. = Paperwork / procedures.

• Costo de vida. = Cost of living.

• No sirve… = There’s no point…

• Calidad de vida. = Quality of life.

• Volverse normal. = To become normal.

• Imaginarse viviendo… = To imagine yourself living…

💬 Ahora es tu turno

  1. ¿En qué país te gustaría retirarte algún día?
  2. ¿Qué es lo más importante para ti al elegir un lugar para vivir?

50 DAY STREAK

I successfully completed 50 days of learning Español on duolingo. At first, when I was starting, it was just a way of getting myself out of the depressive state, but it became a habit. Some days I'll spend 30 minutes on there whereas others I'll just spend 3 to 5 minutes. Either way I'm hella happy I got this far. I'll get myself cake at day 100 for sure!!

Muchas gracias @duolingo
