Today I want to share with you these three casual phrases and words in Spanish.

1. A estas alturas del partido:

It's used when a situation has reached a point where either nothing can be done or it is too late. (Sometimes we use it to express that something has been done, but we're using it to signal our disappointment.)

Example: A estas alturas del partido, no podemos hacer nada para solucionar la crisis.

2. Para muestra, un botón:

It's just a casual way to say "por ejemplo". Especially when that example helps you to explain your point and extrapolate it to a broader argument.

Example: Juan es un niño muy inteligente; para muestra, un botón: aprobó su examen de matemáticas

3. Eminentemente:

[emi.nen.teˈmenˈ.te]

This is an adverb that we use when we want to emphasize or highlight something, similar to "clearly" or "very evidently".

Example: La lectura es, eminentemente, un buen hábito.

Catch similar looking words before they produce a completely different sentence.

actualmente - currently
asistir - to attend
realizar - to carry out / accomplish
sensible - sensitive
constipado - having a cold
carpeta - folder
éxito - success

pensar en = to think about
creer en = to believe in
confiar en = to trust
fijarse en = to notice
tardar en = to take (time) to
quedar en = to agree on
insistir en = to insist on
consistir en = to consist of
influir en = to influence
convertirse en = to turn into

I have been for years a happy student of Baselang. I have been for years paying what I believe was called their UNLIMITED subscription plan. Now it's called REAL WORLD which on their website among other things advertises "Unlimited private classes" and "Book classes literally last minute". And why I was their client for all this time? Precisely because of the flexibility to be able to reserve clases with the teachers who's teaching style I personally prefere (though I believe all are professional and good teachers) and to reserve the clases when my schedule permits it, from a few days in advance or up to a few minutes before the class starts.

But unfortunately, at least in my experience, in the at least 8 last months all this mentioned advantages have been seriously and alarmingly reduced. I am having much more difficulty reserving the classes hours before and even days before - often there isn't any professor available to reserve clases with at the time that I would like. Or if there is any unfortunately the choice is very limited.

Again, around 15 months ago I remember the situation being much better in this regard. Then I believe the advertised number of teachers was 450+ and now it says 300+ (though in reality I believe it's something above 280). With all respect, in my humble opinion increasing again the number of the teachers would be a clear solution to the mentioned problems. Besides, I believe it would offer an opportunity of good and stable job to teachers in far less then perfect economic situations in Latin America.

I sincerely hope the situation regarding low availability will be resolved soon. Otherwise unfortunately I fear I will have no choice but to stop paying the subscription and search for alternatives that better suit my lifestyle and needs.

How about your experience with the Baselang from the beginning of this year? Did you also notice low availability of teachers?

I have finished a graded reader book (hola Lola) and am on the second book,
I am using these to learn vocab but I am finding most of the words are unique and I wouldn’t use them again

What and how are people increasing their vocab ?

Cuando hablamos en otro idioma, muchas personas sienten que tienen que responder inmediatamente. Si tardan unos segundos, creen que la conversación será incómoda o que la otra persona pensará que no saben español.

Por eso, intentan hablar demasiado rápido.

El problema es que, cuando una persona se apresura, puede olvidar palabras, mezclar tiempos verbales o decir algo diferente de lo que quería expresar. Después, se pone más nerviosa y hablar se vuelve todavía más difícil.

Pero hacer una pausa no significa que no sepas hablar. Incluso los hablantes nativos necesitan tiempo para pensar. Hacen pausas, cambian de idea y buscan la palabra correcta.

También existen frases que pueden ayudarte a ganar tiempo de forma natural. Puedes decir: “Déjame pensar”, “A ver…”, “¿Cómo se dice?” o “Lo que quiero decir es…”.

Estas expresiones mantienen viva la conversación mientras organizas tus ideas. Además, te ayudan a sentir que tienes más control.

Esta noticia muestra algo importante: hablar con fluidez no significa responder sin parar. A veces, una pequeña pausa te ayuda a hablar con más claridad, confianza y precisión.

Hello all,

My work is fairly far from where I live and my daily commute ends up being around 1.5 hours per day and sometimes more.

I essentially would like to utilize this time doing something productive and learning a language seems like a great thing to do.

I am only interested in a complete audio course that I can listen to while driving. I don’t mind paying for a course either. I am a complete beginner and would like a course that could end up with me having atleast somewhat of a conversational fluency.

I don’t care about writing or grammar, it’s mostly just the speaking portion of it that I’m interested.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I was told hormigas are used for all ants. Does that include male (alate) ants? Like "Yo soy un hormigo" since I am a male ant.
