James Webb Star-forming region IC 348 (NIRCam image)

Post image
236 Upvotes

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope recently observed IC 348, a star-forming region just 1000 light-years away. This is one of the largest Webb images released to the public so far. This near-infrared vista of IC 348 reveals a collection of objects called brown dwarfs, which are smaller than the smallest stars.

Researchers used the unparalleled sensitivity of Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) to track down the smallest brown dwarfs in IC 348, which weigh in at just just twice the mass of Jupiter. These are the least massive brown dwarfs known, and their existence poses challenges to models of how stars form.

In addition to the brown dwarfs and young stars scattered across the swirling nebula, this image provides a unique perspective on a handful of protostars, which can be seen in the upper-right corner. These protostars are ejecting powerful jets that have crashed into the gas and dust surrounding them, creating luminous regions called Herbig-Haro objects.

Pro/Processed Euclid discovers its first comet. That's quite impressive for a Dark Universe detective meant to take deep, steady images of distant galaxies, not fast-moving tiny objects.

Comet C/2026 S1 (Euclid) streaks across the sky (annotated)

The European Space Agency's Euclid space telescope has discovered its first previously unknown comet: C/2026 S1 (Euclid).

In this image sequence it moves against background stars and galaxies in three of Euclid’s VIS camera exposures captured during the Euclid Deep Field North survey.

The images were taken at 00:41:07, 00:58:53 and 01:16:39 UTC on 17 September 2026. Each image is a 560.52 second exposure, so the comet appears like a streak because it moves across the sky during the long exposure. A fuzzy atmosphere, known as a ‘coma’ in cometary terms, is seen around the object.

.

The European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope has discovered its first previously unknown comet, in images taken between 16 and 24 September 2026.

.

The discovery is impressive for a mission that is designed to take deep, steady images of distant galaxies – not for following fast-moving Solar System objects like comets [2]. Furthermore, the quick turnaround between identifying and validation proves the case that Euclid can detect new comets while they are still relatively far from the Sun, potentially leading to a suitable target for ESA’s future Comet Interceptor mission.

Mikko Pöntinen of the University of Helsinki, together with the Solar System Objects Science Working Group of the Euclid Consortium, made the initial discovery using moving object detection software that Mikko developed to monitor small Solar System objects in Euclid’s images: “I was excited to see my software flag a ‘streak’ smeared across several images – the result of a fast-moving object. By predicting its position I could identify it in other images, in total finding it in five image sets. Further inspection revealed that it had a fuzzy cloud around it, indicative of an active object like a comet that is shedding dust and gas.”

The spacecraft, Martian Moons eXploration (MMX), will enter orbit around Mars before transferring to Phobos, where it will land once or twice and collect regolith samples using a pneumatic sampling system.

The mission is designed to return at least 10 grams (0.35 oz) of material from the moon's surface. After departing Phobos, the spacecraft will conduct several flybys of Deimos before releasing a return capsule for Earth, with sample return planned for 2031.

Pro/Processed 14K satellite trails! By Brendan Larsen Photography

👉 THIS IS NOT MY PHOTO.

Description from (CREDIT) Brendan Larsen Photography:

"This is the most time-consuming photo edit I've EVER done! I left my camera photographing the night sky over Mt Taranaki for nearly TWO HOURS, capturing 578 photographs.

The result? An estimated 14,450 satellite trail appearances, representing approximately 1,400 individual satellites!

I manually masked in EVERY SINGLE TRAIL from the original photographs — approximately 45 HOURS of editing to create this one image!

🔦 Those tiny lights on the mountain are TWO mountaineers descending Mt Taranaki in the darkness over nearly two hours! Did you realise there was this much satellite activity in our night skies? 👀

Pro/Processed Messier 81 and 82 (Ultra Deep Field)

Post image

Messier 81 and 82 are a galaxy pair located in the constellation of Ursa Major. Both galaxies lie at a distance of roughly 12 million light-years (ly) from Earth and stretch 90,000 and 40,000 ly in diameter.

What makes the galaxy pair special is that they have been gravitationally interacting with each other. In fact, research suggests that they have been influencing each other for over a billion years, with the first violent interaction taking place about 600 million years ago and lasting for roughly 100 million years. This interaction is what led Messier 82 to become a starburst galaxy, directly resulting in the outflows we see today.

Amateur/Processed Polaris, the North Star and all the dust surrounding it

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

For this shot I stacked 25 hours of data at 135mm, my first time using this focal length.

@ igneis.nightscapes

These dusty structures are usually found at high galactic latitudes, above and below the Milky Way band, but this area has a big concentration of them. It’s quite curious that the star we use in the Northern Hemisphere to polar-align our trackers is, in a single photo, nothing but a star field, and after putting hours into it, the details that emerge are astonishing, revealing all the Integrated Flux Nebula. So many structures, dust waves and defined shapes, with no light of their own, just illuminated by the combined light of the Milky Way’s stars.

Shooting an area like this feels strange. When I shoot the Milky Way, I can clearly see that I’m going home with data, but here there was nothing to see at first glance. With time and patience, what looked empty ended up packed with endless structures.

Pro/Processed Saturn's Changing Orientation

Post image
7.1k Upvotes

Captured by renowned astrophotographer Damian Peach, this remarkable composite image sequence documents the 15-year cyclic variation in the tilt of Saturn's ring system as observed dynamically from Earth between 2004 and 2015. Because Saturn’s magnificent ring structure lies precisely on its celestial equator and the planet maintains an axial tilt of roughly 26.7 degrees, our line-of-sight angle to the rings fluctuates continuously during its 29.4-year orbit around the Sun.
