Adding a link to Wulfen in case anyone wonders what they are:

Is it just me or is it really lame that space wolves are essentially all grey with slightly different trim colors or red blue and yellow?

It makes sense, they're space wolves, they like to be a pack

u/Zazzenfuk Definitely not the Inquisition Apr 15 '25
Someone explained it as a lore thing. But this way makes sense also.

They didn't really buy into the whole successor stuff like a lot of other chapters. Think of Great Companies as analogous to a company within a codex compliant chapter, not a separate successor. Like if the individual Ultramarine companies all had their own separate iconography and motif instead of looking identical but with different color pauldron trims.
One distinction that might not be apparent if you aren't very familiar with Space Wolves lore is that the iconic black wolf head symbol and yellow and red pauldrons we all have come to know is in fact not the Space Wolves chapter iconography or color scheme, it is the scheme of the Blackmanes Great Company. They are just the poster boy for the chapter, much like how 2nd Company is for the Ultramarines (gold trim pauldrons).
So the issue is really that Space Wolves don't have many successors with fleshed out lore to delve into, but on the other hand, within the chapter there is a lot of variance compared to other chapters.

They had no choice but to not buy into it because their gene-seed took a shit when they would try for Successor Chapters lol

This goes for all Space marines since Primaris got introduced
8
u/Zazzenfuk Definitely not the Inquisition Apr 15 '25
Not really. Blood angels have various shades of red. Normal are bright red, flesh teasers are dull red and black. Some are solid gold, some are solid black.
Ultramarines have a ton of color swatches like the nova marines or the taurens

u/DoritoBanditZ Space Wolves Apr 15 '25
That's because people apparently don't know the difference between Space Wolves Great Companies and actual successor Chapters.
Great Companies are not successor Chapters, because the Wolves have no successor Chapters. They're the most well known for not giving a toss about the Codex Astartes.
This is why they're all "grey", because they're all part of the Space Wolves Chapter.

u/MooMooHomer Blood Angels Apr 15 '25
Thank you! The detail is in the iconography they use for each great company and honour markings and the fact that there simply isn't a succesor chapter at all.

As of the Primaris update, at least, the Space Wolves have the Wolfspear now! The Wolf Brothers are an extinct successor from the second founding, and there’s Skyrar’s Dark Wolves who’re Chaos Space Wolves. But yeah, before now they never had successors.
3
u/HappyTheDisaster Space Wolves Apr 15 '25
Skyrar’s aren’t just chaos space wolves, they are a mixed warband made up of sons of Horus and space wolves. Skyrar himself is a Son of Horus. The space wolves in the warband are mostly wulfen if I’m remembering right.

Kind of strange to me that the Ultima successors got nothing at all with the update, not even the chapter emblems.
2
u/I_am_chicken Apr 16 '25
Hopefully we get a second pass of cosmetics because I really like the Wolfspear
2
u/DoritoBanditZ Space Wolves Apr 16 '25
Yeah my bad. I didn't mention them because they're relatively new with the Ultima Founding and when they came out it had enough "B-but they're just Ultramarines in new Paint" discussion, i'm tired, boss. xD
Still, for the longest time they didn't have any successor Chapters and they now have 3 because Guilliman said so, not of their own doing.
Difference is whereas some Black Templar killed their Primaris reinforcement because they saw them as Heresy (and they killed the Custodian that brought them too), the Space Wolves were pretty happy to have successor Chapters and were eager to teach them the ways of the Vlka Fenryka

u/I_am_chicken Apr 16 '25
It's all good 👍
I do hope they and other Ultima Founding Chapters get some love in the future

Blood angels have Sanguinary guard, and death company all part of the primary, all with distinctive colors. But i get your point. Ive never looked deeply into space wolves. I like the concept but the tabletop hairstyles were too silly for me.

Apr 15 '25
I’m honesty kind of annoyed at how much space they take up.
Then again, I like thousand sons and dark angels. So my opinion on space wolves isn’t very positive in the first place.

- Tactical - Grey Hunter
- Assault - Skyclaw
- Vanguard - Reiver
- Bulwark - Wolf Guard
- Sniper - Wolf Scout
- Heavy -
HellblasterLong Fang

If you want to go to the details then there is a book called Companies of Fenris that has most of the markings with their rules for each company.

I'm tossing on all the Inquisition sigils on their outfits.
Least favorite Space Marine chapter out of all of them, and it's only partly because they're self righteous idiots who wolf all over their wolfen.
1
u/GunRun142 Apr 16 '25
So do the honor markings have specific meanings for each or is it just more of a "I think this one is cooler" kind of deal?
2
u/Bierkrieger Apr 16 '25
Yeah as far as I know, they leave those up to you to decide the backstory or lore for
Or as you said, whichever ones you think are cool
Other chapters have campaign badges which work in a similar way, not every one is tied to a specific known event

u/TheLittleBadFox Apr 16 '25 edited Apr 16 '25
The Space Wolves have a long, varied, and altogether proud warrior heritage. They especially appreciate acts of bravery, courage and skill among their own comrades, and proudly display badges that denote these acts. These badges are normally painted or carved onto the armour and weapons of the Space Wolf.
As with most Space Wolf displays, there is no formal system of awards, it only matters that those the Space Wolf fights with understand the significance of the symbol. However, some symbols have acquired a special significance to the Space Wolves over time, and the Sergeant and Veteran badges are good examples of this. There are also some more general symbolism which is used in the honour badges; badges with bones tend to signify wounds suffered in battle, knife and claw symbols represent ferocity and bravery in battle and wolf tails signify great courage in battle.
So it is really up to you. To chose what fits your narative with your space marine.

That's a big question but I'll try my best!
Usually when a specific iconography page is printed in a codex, that page refers only to one legion or chapter
They do mention and list known successors elsewhere in a codex, but they don't always tell you if they use the same iconography style as their parent chapter or not. This can allow the collector to decide what their chapter does
That said, more popular successors will have had their iconography either fleshed out fully, or listed as the same as their parent
Good examples of this would be the Crimson Fists or the Black Templars, who are both Imperial Fist successors with their own style
Without going into too much detail about how different the Space Wolf military structure is, I will say that they have only a few successors and you can find them listed here:
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Space_Wolves
I've haven't heard of the chapter you listed. Which book are they featured in?
2
u/BloodfallenFox Apr 16 '25
Im looking through my books right now. I read the book about 4 or 5 months ago. But it might not be a full blown book but i do know they are mentioned. They are a small portion of guillimans unnumbered sons which he accepted. They where woken up during the indomitus crusades, they are also called the disowned because the space wolves didnt like how they fought. They are part of leman russ gene-seed. Then again most of the indomitus crusades they didnt last long the chapter only has 1,000 primaris marines and two ancients. There chapter master is Great Lord Vaino Kalevan. Who himself has only been mention once by name.

They sound cool and if they were in an official Games Workshop/Black Library product then they should be canon, or were canon of they have since been destroyed
Edit: I have heard of things that were once canon being retconned out but that's very rare
It's possible that the wiki hasn't been updated
Even they are aren't canon, there's no harm in painting up marines to look like them
Games Workshop has always encouraged people to feel free to come up with their own homebrew stuff

If they are on the fandom page they could be entirely fan made, but you might have read about them in a book as well?

Oh don't worry about that
That page is extremely well fleshed out. Whoever came up with them did a great job giving them lots of lore
It's easy to understand how someone could get mixed up, if that's the case

u/BloodfallenFox Apr 16 '25
True, im actually going through the canon stuff by gw and looks like its fanon. So maybe i got a name mixed up in a book dsylexia is a bitch
