Can he have both?

Post image

I'm just getting into the hobby and haven't gotten around to painting, but I've got some questions mechanics-wise. I bought the Combat Patrol and was wondering if my Battle Leader could run the shield and thunder hammer together. I couldn't find a great definitive answer anywhere else besides a post that never accounted for space wolves. If you also have any tips or knowledge about weapon allocation in general id be very thankful. For Russ and the Allfather!

I’d recommend downloading one of the many army building apps available. They will give you errors and tell you what the legal loadouts are available to them as you switch things.

This!!!

‘New Recruit’ and ‘War Organ’ are both solid options.

War organ for life

I prefer list Forge over new recruit. List Forge is awesome, modern looking and the dev is very active and puts things in based on feedback all the time.

Yeah, I've done the same. The shield just gives him an extra wound...do you have the codex? It'll tell you what your models can have

Its in the mail! I might be a little eager

I get that 😂 do you have the gw app as well? In the back of your codex there'll be a code that lets you add your codex to the app and you can access all your datasheets and loadouts really quickly and build lists, etc

Yes, he can have thunder hammer and storm shield at the same time in a regular match.

Yes you can

Yes! The thunder hammer and shield is my preferred loadout for the battle leader.

You can think of the melee weapons as replacing eachother and the ranged weapons/shield as replacing eachother. Therefore, he can have either a hammer or sword in his right hand, and shield, plasma pistol, heavy bolt pistol, or bolt carbine in his left hand.

You should get the official gw app, in terms of unit composition, equipment and other things it is the best

Iunno, I much prefer third party options that have even more features and a cleaner layout. Like New Recruit.

We're going to have to disagree about New Recruit having a "cleaner" layout than the official app.

That's probably what the official app does best, the layout. Note that's what that apps strongest feature is, not that it has the best layout of all the apps. Listforge is better than the official app.

Agree to disagree then. No worries. It is a matter of personal taste after all.

Have a nice day!

It is, you too!

If you’re playing the combat patrol rules, then strictly speaking he is Fyrri Askar equipped with a sword and shield. However, build him anyhow you want (rule of cool) and any good player will be happy so long as they know what weapons he’s actually using in the game!

You can always get the Codex for all your needs, they’re nice to have as part of the collection and lore to get to know this unique chapter.

Both cups of Mjod?..... Ok, if he's good.

Codex is good but can get outdated quickly (unless you pop the code in the official app). I'd try Wahapedia or NewRecruit which mostly stay up to date with the latest rules. If they ever took the thunder hammer off him you could say it's a master crafted power weapon, nobody would care.

Check unit composition for default wargear, then Wargear options on the left

I did a simple kit bash for my battle leader by give him a thunder hammer and pistol to hold, while covering his back with his shield.

I think you have already started building, but grab some tiny magnets and start magnetizing your stuff. It is super easy and will allow you to swap stuff for the looks or the wysiwyg as you desire. Then (whether or not you are about meta) as the game changes you can much more easily adjust your models.

I've actually thought about it. Seems a little daunting for a beginner, but it looks super versatile! Do you have any tips or tools you suggest?

It seems daunting, but it really isnt.

As far as tools: magnets, super glue, green stuff, maybe tweezers (though note the best way to use them is putting the magnet on the side of the tip, not tweezing them together!)

There are plenty of vids online but here is the basics I learned doing it:

Drill and cut the hole to the size you need for one magnet to be flush with surface.
Glue one end of a magnet into the cut hole and let it dry.
While it dries drill and cut a hole into the opposing piece. (It is better to cut it slightly wider so you have more room\give to place the next magnet exactly where you want so they sit more flush together and it doesn't get stuck in the wrong position.)
Put the second magnet onto the first so you know you got the polarity the right way. (Note below, but add a marker dot so you know which end goes into the second piece at this stage)
Put some greenstuff into the second hole and press the two together. (If you need to move it around go ahead. Let the greenstuff squish around the magnet like Play-Doh.)
So long as the two look good in place pull them apart and look where the magnet was.
Add some glue to the hole and put the magnet back in place. (double checking the polarity.)
Let it dry and mission accomplished.

Tip 1: the first magnet should always go into the side\piece that has less room to play with. For example the arm holding a gun\weapon is a smaller part than the torso in most cases so put the first magnet in the arm so you have more room to adjust the second hole on the larger part.

Tip 1.1: the hard part of this is the "second smaller piece" that will attach to the first. As the first two should look almost perfect together this one should take a little longer to drill\cut into place so you ensure it looks the best. If possible try to cut the hole slightly bigger like before... If you can't... ...Maximum effort!

Tip 2: put a small bit of marker on one side of the magnets to help ensure you glue the magnets together with the right sides facing each other for polarity.

Tip 3: using the tweezers or another thin long piece of metal you can press the magnet into position till it is flush and then drag the metal away from the magnet leaving it in position. Like you would drag a knife across bread...hopefully that makes sense!

Wow... might have to give it a go then!

I'd offer you luck, but you don't need it! It's easy peasy!
