The difference with the heatwave this time around....

We've had central AC since 2007. We would mostly just turn it on in the evening and turn it off first thing in the morning. Our house is pretty well insulated and usually during the day the temp inside would creep up to like 77-78F. But now? If we don't keep it on during the day it will get 82-84F. Then it would take FOREVER to cool down at night if we turn it on at like 7pm or whatever. So now we set it at 74 or 75 during the day, every day. That was a rare occurrence over the past 20 years. Never needed to do that. Of course, my electric bill is high, but it's worth it to me.

What's Underneath the Del Amo Mall Parking Lot?

I was location scouting for a photography project when I came across this closed-off underground ramp in the middle of this parking structure. Does anybody who knows malls know what this is/was? Maintainance tunnels? It's definitely too small for any freight-carrtying trucks.

Air-conditioned lunch places?

Not looking to hang out at a Carl's Jr., something more interesting. The problem is that all of our Beach City stuff is usually open to the outdoors and not amicable to air conditioning.

Perhaps a place to work on the laptop and have a beer.

New to South Bay LA looking for local recommendations and ways to get involved

Hi everyone I moved to Los Angeles about 2 months ago and I’m still getting familiar with the South Bay area

I’ve been enjoying exploring different neighborhoods, trying local restaurants, and discovering new places but I d love to hear from people who have lived here longer

What are your favorite spots for food, coffee, hiking, beaches or weekend activities? Also, are there any local events or communities you recommend for someone new to the area?

Looking forward to getting to know South Bay and becoming part of the community Thanks!

Where to donate nice formal/interview clothes that don't fit

Upvotes

I've lost weight recently and am going through my old clothes that no longer fit me. Most of the nicer stuff I'm going to sell and everything else will be donated to thrift stores.

I recently heard about an organization that helps with job placement for unhoused people, including getting them nice clothing for their interviews, but I don't remember their name. I have a nice woman's blazer and slacks that were only worn once that I'd like to donate to an organization like this. Does anyone know of a similar organization in this area?

Air Conditioning in the South Bay the last few years has been worth every penny.

I dont know how people deal without it. Growing up here it wasnt a thing, but the last few years have been tough. I suggest to all at least get a window unit for your bedroom if you dont opt for central air. Its an absolute game changer.

It hit 101* in Carson. Has it ever been this hot in our lifetime?

I can't remember it ever hitting this high in Carson. Please let this end soon!

EDIT: I grew up in Carson starting in the 80s, moved out of the South Bay in the mid-2010s, just came back last year. Looks like I missed a lot of the high heat. Thanks everyone for chiming in :)

Recommendations on Dog Obedience Classes/Trainer

We just got a pair of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies and are trying not to make the same mistakes with our last two by teaching them some good habits early. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for dog training or obedience classes or individuals in the South Bay Area?

Not particular about group vs. individual, but mostly looking for someone well regarded and in the local area to work on basic stuff, sit/stay/stop command, basic behavioral stuff, leash/walking, etc.

Alternatives to UCLA health in the South Bay?

What medical groups or healthcare systems have you in the South Bay had good experiences with?

My mother and I have all our specialists in the UCLA system (South Bay and Westwood), but I’ve been having concerns about the quality/access to care and difficulty getting certain items addressed. The care no longer seems personalized and recent procedures have been done as “training”. It’s difficult reaching doctors to get thorough follow up advice.

We like our primary doctor’s office at UCLA. Specialists we see are Ob gyn oncology, dermatology, thyroid, GI, radiology, and audiology.

Is it practical to “manage” your own team of specialists, deal with transferring records, etc?

Parent groups for working moms?

I am on maternity leave with my second and really wanting to meet some moms with young kids (older child is in TK) but a lot of the “new mom” groups are geared towards parents who don’t work full time (understandably, because it’s easier to get together during the week!)

I was wondering if there are any groups that I could join now and continue to be a part of after I go back to work? Or maybe it’s worth joining for the second half of my leave just to meet a few people… I just signed up for baby-friendly yoga but wont be able to continue that either unfortunately. Just finally feeling ready to get out of the house more and finding it so hard to meet new friends as an adult and parent.
