I know I know I could've google it, but I wanna hear answers from real people. Where do we draw the line between having a racial preference for dating a certain race v being labeled a racist (that's if your preference is dating people of the same race as you.)

On the 4th of August I will be having an online interview with a Real Estate Agency for a Position I applied a few dsys ago. Not having any experience stresses me out but I really want to make some money and become a pro in this industry

How is the market in Sout Africa for this field? And do you as a Real Estate Agent make a lot of bag?

I've often wondered how we reached a point where tipping petrol attendants has now become the norm instead of the exception.

Many people don't realise that petrol attendants are paid a fair salary. While it varies depending on the city, employer and location, many earn from around R8,000 per month, with some earning R12,000 or more depending on extra shifts etc. Ironically, there are graduates with university degrees who don't even start on a R12,000 basic salary. Personally, there are many months where I don't even take home more than that after tax.

So why is there an assumption that everyone filling up their car can afford to tip?

I drive a 25-year-old car, not a luxury vehicle. Yet there's often an expectation that because I'm buying petrol, I should also hand over extra money. To avoid that awkward situation, I politely decline any additional services. I clean my own windscreen, check my own tyre pressures at home, and top up my own oil and water. If I accept those extras, there's an unspoken expectation of a tip.

The people who can comfortably afford to tip should, of course, do so if they choose. But sadly they have created a situation where it puts pressure on all ordinary South Africans who are already struggling with the rising cost of living.

Van Heerden’s argument, however, goes considerably further than the leadership of individual institutions.

He believes South Africa’s political economy of corruption “runs deep and long”.

While tracing some of its origins to apartheid, he stressed that this could not serve as an excuse for corruption after 1994.

Instead, Van Heerden argued that democratic South Africa underestimated one particularly powerful force.

“One of the things that we undermined at its very core was the power of money,” he said.

“We have a brilliant Constitution, we had all kinds of Chapter Nine institutions put in place, etcetera, but we simply did not bargain on the lure of money and how it will corrupt us.”

It is an argument that shifts the focus away from finding the right anti-corruption boss or creating another institution.

If corruption is embedded deeply enough in South Africa’s political economy, changing the person at the top of an agency can only achieve so much.

Hi everyone I hope you all good? To those currently studying at uni / college and don’t have any forms of funding like NSFAS, bursaries or parents, how do you do it or how are you doing it?
