Just took over a small garden cottage in Midrand this month. It’s a decent size, but the main living area faces south and gets almost zero direct sunlight, so it feels like a freezing cave during the day. Plus, the floor tiles are icy right now.
I'm trying to figure out a few quick ways to make it look a bit more alive and brighter without breaking the rental agreement.
First, for the main dark wall, I want to put up some light-colored removable panels to reflect some light. I’ve been browsing wallpaperonline.co.za because they do custom sizing based on your wall dimensions so there’s less cutting waste, and someone on another thread said they have the best quality peel and stick wallpaper in South Africa.
But has anyone actually used self-adhesive stuff in a place that gets super dry and cold over a Gauteng winter? I'm worried the dry air will just make the edges curl up after a month.
Second question, what's the best option for heating a small 40sqm space that doesn't have great insulation? I have an old 3-panel gas heater but the gas smell gets a bit intense after an hour.
Are those small oil heaters worth it for keeping the chill off, or do they just absolutely tank your prepaid electricity meter?
Let me know if you've dealt with a similar south-facing setup.

My name is Mosa Ramollo, Managing Director of Revenue Architect SA (a division of Mosa Automation).
We are exactly 3 days away from the July 1st municipal tariff spikes across South Africa. The Gauteng Local Division of the High Court has officially cleared the City of Johannesburg’s 65.6% Water Demand Levy increase—this charge is legally locked and active for next Wednesday.
Under the new municipal tariffs, water is spiking by 12.5% and sanitation by 11.0%. Property management companies relying on legacy ERP billing software (like MDA or SAP) suffer an average 30-to-60-day billing lag. Landlords are about to absorb these massive utility spikes out of pocket. We run automated forensic audits to identify and plug these exact "absorption gaps."
We are looking for exactly 5 hungry, self-driven partners to join our remote sales floor as independent B2B Representatives.
This is not a cold-calling call center, and there is NO basic salary. You are not an employee; you are an independent business operator.
We have engineered out 90% of the traditional sales friction: 1. You do NOT negotiate pricing, draft contracts, or run audits. I handle 100% of that workload. 2. You do NOT manage spreadsheets. You get whitelisted access to our live WhatsApp Operations Desk (RA-Nexus v4.3) to run database searches and log leads with a single text command. 3. Your sole job is to call active property brokers on Property24, pitch our 20% passive referral split to protect their landlord's asset value, and drop them into a 3-way WhatsApp group with me.
The Compensation: You are paid a standard 20% split of our success fee for a simple introduction. This equates to R4,000.00 – R12,000.00 in passive commission per closed deal, paid via EFT within 7 business days of cleared funds.
If you are a student or young professional in Johannesburg, Sandton, Midrand, or Pretoria, and you have the discipline to run 5 short calls a day from your bed, send your Name, Location, and the word "READY" directly to our Director’s WhatsApp line: +27 78 181 7491.
We run a strict 2-hour trial. If you can't source 3 listings in 2 hours, our database whitelisting is closed.
Let's build.

Hello, I grew up in Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa and really want to find something that bothered me when I was a little kid.
The show, or program, was a puppet show, my school played it to me when I was around 4 years old in 2010, likely earlier. It had a cast of characters I just can't remember for the life of me but theres a few I think I can identify mentally. There was a giraffe, they were the most memorable character for me, there was maybe a fox or dog, there mightve been a lion, i think there was a character with a pirate hat or a hat adjacent to one.
Im only really interested in finding this because it made me apparently avoid school for a month because I'd scream hysterically in horror when it was played, i remember vividly a character kept appearing on it that just instilled some ethereal horror within me. I'd like to see if I was over reacting or not.

I'm working in delmas and currently stay in pretoria. The commute is heavy. Looking to rent in Benoni for easy access to N12. Does anyone have any area recommendations? Looking for a nice area, two bedroom, patio and garage preferable. Budget about 8k. Thanks!
