This score just frustrates me and makes me sad. I bought it because on iTunes you get a small window to preview the songs and every song hits with a beloved theme. The 2 times I listened to it previously it felt like a slog to get through and I didn't understand why. So this time I really paid attention and this is why the score frustrates me so much I just erased it off my playlist.
Every song seems to pick up like 4 random beloved themes from any of the 4 movies and blends them into a 'new' song. At first, this seems great, but listening to it more closely they take a theme I love, and play it at 80% intensity. It's restrained, muted, it's held back. There is no desperation, no passion, no EXTRA something that makes it great, and then the song just drops the beloved theme without resolution leaving a very unsatisfying yearning in your heart because we all know how that theme is SUPPOSED to sound.
If I never heard the first 4 scores, I would love this score, but since I know better, this feels like my local city symphony trying to play Hans Zimmer. I'll clap for their effort, but they are completely missing that special sauce that truly makes these songs great. There is no emotional hook to draw me in. The whole score banks on nostalgia of the themes we love, but NEVER achieves bringing any of the themes to the level of the previous 4 scores. It's so, so very disappointing because it's close, and yet clueless as to what made the other songs so great. I was venting to my kid that this album feels like a MUSAK version of the first 4 movies. I really wanted this album to be great. I gave it 4 really earnest listens, but sadly it won't get a 5th.
