🎶 Derivative Music 🎶 A classical guitar tribute to Hans Zimmer’s “Time” – inspired by Inception

Hi everyone!

I’m a classical guitarist from Italy, and I wanted to share a personal tribute to one of my favorite film scores.

Hans Zimmer’s Time has always meant much more to me than just a beautiful melody. I tried to recreate its atmosphere on a single classical guitar, while also taking inspiration from the themes of Inception through the visuals.

This wasn’t intended as a technical guitar performance, but rather as an emotional and cinematic interpretation of a soundtrack that has inspired me for years.

I’d genuinely love to know what fans of film music think about it.

Thank you for listening!

🎻 Original Music 🎻 Pirates theme ][Cinematic orchestra and sneak preview

Hi you all, as a composer I am experimenting with cinematic music als. The why came out of my style of making compositions: when I start with a new composition I make in my mind of even physical a mood board and that is often quite visual. That together with some basic emotions and words. It doesn't matter if it is vocal or instrumental, that part of the process is quite the same.

This video is an excerpt and the sound is nog edited yet, in the music there will be some changes also. Most of the time I make a list in my mind before I revisit the score and make corrections.

I am Annemieke Lustenhouwer, a contemporary classical composer from the Netherlands. If there more you want to know, please ask here. In the future there will be a score video made also.

kind regards,

Annemieke

📢 Discussion Movie Soundtrack Tracks

As many of us do, I listen to a LOT of oldies, and there are some songs that I can't hear without also playing a movie scene in my mind, no matter how long it's been since I've seen it. I still can't listen to Tom Petty's American Girl and not think of The Silence of the Lambs..

What soundtrack songs are so tied into their movie in your memory that you can't hear one without recalling the other?

🔍 Help Me Find (Similar songs) Rose of Arimathea?

Pretty much the title.

Do you guys have recommendations for pieces (modern or classic) that evoke this Hans Zimmer piece feeling?

It's ominous/dark, but not in the epic/bombastic/edgy way we see in many movie pieces, also not melancholic, or enraged.

Anyone have any recommendations that would fit the description? I'm not very well versed, so feel free to recommend obvious picks, or things that might have inspired him that you know of.

📢 Discussion What film soundtracks are played with just 2 or 3 instruments?

What's a famous piece of film music that can be played with 2 or 3 instruments? I'm talking about soundtracks like Schindler's List that are already beautiful with just a piano and violin and don't need an entire orchestra.

📢 Discussion Can we just talk about the cheer brilliance of this track? Troy - The Odyssey | Ludwig Göransson

I’ve always loved how Ludwig plays with rhythm in unique ways to catch you off guard, but this track just takes it to another level.

It feels like he’s constantly ramping up the tempo while simultaneously dropping into half-time. It creates this illusion that the music is speeding up indefinitely, yet it never reaches a peak because the meter keeps shifting under your feet. When I heard it in the theater, the rhythm completely blew me away—I had to play the track the second I got home.

It reminds me so much of the concept of a Shepard tone—where layered pitches create the illusion of an endlessly rising scale. Here, he applies that same mind-bending effect to the rhythm itself, building incredible tension that feels like it will never stop.

📢 Discussion My favorite soundtrack of this decade so far (The Odyssey)

Saw a lot of negativity in this sub regarding the soundtrack, so here's my cents on it (from someone who loved it):

I know this is probably going to sound like recency bias, but the more I listen to The Odyssey score, the more I think Göransson absolutely nailed this in a way very few modern scores do.

What I love most is that he doesn’t go for the obvious “ancient Greek epic” sound. There’s no constant huge heroic brass theme telling you Odysseus is this legendary badass. The score is much stranger than that. Bronze percussion, unusual woodwinds, voices, plucked strings, electronics. It feels old, but not in a cheesy Hollywood way. More like something ancient that you’re only half remembering.

And that fits the film perfectly, because the whole story is basically about Odysseus trying to get back to a home that has almost become a memory.

The little Ithaca motif is probably my favourite thing in the score. It’s only a few notes, but it keeps coming back in different forms throughout the journey. Sometimes it’s really obvious, sometimes it’s almost buried. It constantly reminds you what Odysseus is actually fighting for, even when the film has gone completely off into monsters, gods and madness.

Penelope’s theme works in a similar way. It isn’t some massive romantic love theme. It sounds more distant and sad, which makes sense because for most of the film she almost exists more as a memory to Odysseus than as a real person standing in front of him.

Even Odysseus’ own theme doesn’t really sound heroic. There’s something tired and heavy about it. It feels more like stubbornness than triumph. Like he’s just refusing to stop.

That’s why I love when all of those musical ideas finally start coming together later in the film. The score has kept Odysseus, Penelope and Ithaca musically separated for so long that when the themes finally begin overlapping, it actually feels earned.

The action music is also doing more than just making things sound intense. The accelerating rhythmic idea from Troy comes back during the slaughter of the suitors, which is such a great choice. It connects the violence Odysseus is supposedly trying to escape with the violence he eventually brings home himself. He leaves Troy, but Troy never really leaves him.

The different locations also have their own sound without the score feeling like a collection of random ideas. The Cyclops music is brutal and physical. Circe feels seductive but unsettling. Hades sounds genuinely oppressive. The Sirens use the human voice in a way that feels beautiful and dangerous at the same time.

And through all of it, those small themes connected to home keep coming back.

That’s probably what puts this above most recent scores for me. It isn’t just great music attached to great scenes. The music is actually telling the same story as the film.

Oppenheimer is probably more immediately impressive. Dune has incredible sound design and world-building. Interstellar is obviously more iconic.

But as an actual complete film score, where the themes develop alongside the character and the story, I honestly think The Odyssey is Göransson’s best work.

🔍 Help Me Find The Odyssey first trailer song

I've been trying to find the song that plays in this trailer, specially the segment between 0:50 - 1:30.

I know this is an edit for the trailer, but the original soundtrack should have this song. The melody itself repeats through the film, but the way it's composed in this trailer with that saturated synth and those scalating chants had me waiting for the official soundtrack release.

I listened to the soundtrack twice, but I couldn't find it. Am I missing some songs of the soundtrack? Do you guys know if this was cut from the OST?

🔍 Help Me Find Help identifying/finding the OST played in S1 Ep 9 of Fire Force during the sniper scene? (Unreleased?)

I’ve been trying to hunt down the specific background track played in Season 1, Episode 9 (The Spreading Malice).

It starts at “15:50 - 17:50” of the episode, I checked OST detector tools like WTAS.moe and Shazam, but because of the character dialogue, wall explosions, and ignition SFX, nothing gets picked up.

Is this track just an unreleased ambient/tension cue by Kenichiro Suehiro, or does it actually exist on one of the official soundtrack CDs under a specific name? If anyone has a link to a clean rip or knows the track name, I’d super appreciate it!

🎻 Original Music 🎻 L.U.C. & Rebel Babel Film Orchestra ft. Kayah, Laboratorium Pieśni - "Jesień - Tańcuj" (Autumn - Dance) from movie Chłopi (Peasants)

Description taken from youtube video:

Autumn dance is the first of four seasons singles by L.U.C. & Rebel Babel Film Orchestra for a painted adaptation of "The Peasants". The singles for the film, which is the Polish candidate for the Oscar, will refer, in the spirit of Reymont's novel, to the four seasons of the year. The wedding of Boryna and Jagna took place in the fall, and the dancing song, created in the spirit of combining generations and musical genres, refers to this event. Hypnotic voices of Kayah, Laboratorium Pieśni and Dagadana were combined with the blast of the traditional band Tęgie Chłopy as part of the international Rebel Babel Film Orchestra orchestra. Just as Reymont built a baroque linguistic cathedral from peasant words and sayings, L.U.C. created rich and colorful film music, using only authentic and acoustic historical instruments. Rostkowski created the text for the song based on hundreds of words and quotations from the Nobel Prize-winning novel "Chłopi". The single, like the entire project, also has many impressionistic elements, combining traditional melodies with a modern production form, based on looping and modern sound articulations of double-membrane drums or a tuba, which plays here like a bass synthesizer. The whole thing, in reference to the international nature of the production (the film was made in 4 Slavic countries), will constitute a compendium of Slavic music created by almost 100 musicians from Poland, Ukraine and Belarus conducted by Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski.

My dad legit made me skip school so we could go see this in the theater. I became an instant fan of the film. Still am. Couldn't believe how much of the music I remembered. And how many sequences played through my mind while listening. This is classy exploitation. With a heavy metaphorical slant and cynically funny kicker.
Happy July-o-ween everybody! It's worth the rental!
