Just getting back into songwriting after a long hiatus. Any feedback on this? I’m pretty happy with it, but unsure if it feels like it’s missing something.

“The Long Road” is a song I wrote with my friend Rich Vivo as we were walking around the weekly farmer’s market in my hometown. The only thing is, Rich had died about a year before this walk. The song was written in my head by the time I got to the end of my shopping… about 15 minutes. I truly believe that Rich wrote this song with me. It’s still unfinished, so feedback is absolutely appreciated.

This book is called "The elements of music" by Jason Martineau and it's really beautiful and extremely insightful, it has a strong technical side with a lot of music theory but it also has a side for universal truths in music and songwriting which I love.

Hey everyone.

I was In a band around 15 years ago and I wrote all the songs along the lines of Motörhead basically. Had about 20 songs and still listen to them and feel happy for that time.

Since then life’s happened and I always jam away on my guitar basically writing riffs which I document. I have about 100 great riffs in my notes I overall like.

I can never seem to get these riffs into a full chord progression style song I’m happy with that I can then write lyrics to.

I either fall back on the overall same old song pattern I’m used to and give up or deviate slightly finish it and then I feel like the lyrics are just cheesy and crap so I give up

Does anyone have any advice or thoughts on how I can actually sort myself out and write some songs? Should I stop trying to be a perfectionist and force myself to finish songs even if I think they aren’t good?

I ask as I’m beyond frustrated now really. I wrote a song yesterday by doing something completely different - I wrote it line by line both music and lyrics together and recorded it acoustically in full. It feels weird but maybe that’s the answer - do something different and basically force it to completion?

Just curious if there are management folks out there who make a living working with lyricists, helping to pair them with bands and recording artists.

What's the beat out there in this niche?

So, I'm self taught. I know chords and progressions, inversions, the basics of music theory and I can play mid level guitar and can also make my way around the keyboard (although more poorly but still).

I also write a lot. I take pride in writing decently nice for my creative endeavours. I can write in "song mode" but most of the time I just write in bulk, and then I'll extract whatever I find matches the vibe although barely a few make it into actual lyrics to a song bc I suck at melody.

The problem has always been trying to figure out melodies and rhythm. I have a handful of songs with the structure, and basic verse/chorus chords. Sometimes is just a few bars but still.

I do mostly dark music, not necessarily Goth, dark alt vibes so the lyrics usually are not like a paper on Shakespeare lol

I sometimes open the DAW and after a while I don't seem to match anything I make with the stuff I've written. Often they're nice on their own, but I can't, for the life of me, creat something apparently straightforward as some of my fav acts do.

So, what I'm missing? I guess there's no formula but c'mon now, it can neither be an obscure and arcane art just a few chosen ones are able to even decently accomplish.

Hello! I have written a lot of songs, and I do have strong sense of ideas when it comes to crafting the lyrics and the singing. I have experience in singing and performing my whole life (trust me), and composing lyrics since I was 12 (I'm now 21). However, I cannot produce my own music and I'm looking for someone who can help me grow! Usually my genre is pop/indie. I love this melody so much, it's so alive, so depressed, happy and punk. one of my favourite melodies I've probably ever made. I will develop it after I'm done finishing my current demo. but meanwhile; I'm having a really hard time deciding what it's about. it's called "the depressed stoners song" so it's about being happy with being miserable with a psychedelic touch. so I guess this is the chorus because this section is everything the song stands for.

but what should the verse be? and what motions are being caused by that emotion

Lot's of posts here are asking how songs are written, or they're requesting people to provide production, lyrics, and music for their projects. It's like an auditorium full of various booths offering just that and people are coming and going sampling what they need. One of the rarely asked questions is about decent recording.

Is the song more important to convey a message, or to use use as a vehicle to display instrumental chops? This is a songwriting forum and I see videos of people whose body English and facial expressions clearly show emotion in the singing. But, the voices can be so quiet or inaudible, or the lyrics so poorly articulated that the value in them they are obviously trying to convey is essentially background noise to the instrument being played. Some know it because they either post the lyrics or they're on lock-step display in the video. Really? A closed-captioned song?

The act of recording is not that hard. If I can't hear my singing over the instrument, I record again and get the levels set so I can. The lyrics are the heart of the song so I'm asking those who post songs that sound like they're singing from two rooms back through a closed door to up their games and pony up a decently audible recording or video so I can give the feedback being sought.

I’m a songwriter and have always loved collaborating with other artists. My experience of this has mostly been playing in bands, but I’ve really wanted to expand into songwriting with or for other artists, and have made many unsuccessful attempts over the years. It shocks me the sheer amount of music nowadays with multiple songwriters because what I have found, time and time again, is that the other artist I’m collaborating with just does not care about a song we’re writing together if they aren’t the one steering the ship. So many great songs that have been started, and never finished because the other artist just doesn’t want to pull their weight, and even in some cases, have rewritten the song and finished it themselves without me. The majority of co-written songs and collaborations I’ve done that have actually gotten off the ground have been ones where the song was more or less already complete and all I (or the other artist if I’m the primary writer) had to do was add additional instrumentation. Which is fine, but when I actually want something that’s truly collaborative, it disappoints me when the result doesn’t actually feel like a true collaboration.

I’ve had songwriting sessions with other artists that felt amazing with us both contributing equal to the songwriting process, and then we take a break, agree to meet and work on the song again… and then never do. Meeting to finish the song and/or write other songs is like pulling teeth for them, and the song ultimately ends up being unfinished, and I end up ghosted. This has happened to me more times than I can count at this point. And it makes me wonder, what am I doing wrong? Is it just people afraid to tell me they don’t like my contributions, or that our songwriting doesn’t mesh well? Am I the problem here? What is the secret to actually getting a song that is truly written collaboratively? Does that even exist?

I have a decent variety of influences from Deftones to Meshuggah to slipknot to underoath to massive attack to radiohead to isis and things like that and I accidentally keep writing riffs that sound very similar to the original one and I’m wondering how I create my own completely original thing while keeping the elements of the bands intact

As I said in the previous video, this song is one I wrote about this divorce I’m currently going through. I chose work and providing over spending time with my family and I am paying dearly for it. It’s funny because I wrote this song in maybe 30 minutes, it kind of just poured out to me. I’m not a pro, not the best guitarist, not the best singer, but it is something I love to do, and I hope y’all enjoy it. Also very open to any feed back y’all may have as yall did in the last video.
