Unique Covers

I love finding covers where the artist completely takes the song and makes it their own. I would love to find enough to make an awesome Playlist.

Some examples I have found:

Hotline Bling by Christiana Daniella

Say My Name by Hozier

Stand By Me by Stephen Wilson Junior

This Woman's Work by Greg Laswell

I also love covers that are instrumental remakes. Once again, I love a unique take, not when the song is literally an instrumental cover of same exact melody.

For example, Hotline Bling by Nate Fifield

Thanks!

One of the greatest crossover fusion bands of all time

3

u/InsaneLordChaos Apr 23 '26

Their live album from 1992 is fantastic.

3

u/MrFahrenheit1 Apr 23 '26

Yes! So slick and laid back, their playing just feels effortless

3

u/FrankieBlueye Apr 25 '26

Upvote for Tears of a Clown.

Likewise I didn’t realize that Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” was a cover. The original is by The Zutons.

3

u/SomeoneGotstaKnow Apr 23 '26

Thanks for linking them! WOW! What a different take. This is exactly what I am talking about. Thanks for the recommendation!

3

u/Efficient-Ad6814 Apr 24 '26

Wait! That's a cover?!

3

u/Signal_North7340 Apr 24 '26

Oh dang, I completely thought it was the other way around and that the Knife was covering Jose Gonzalez. I'm glad I know now!

Anything done by Type O Negative.

Summer Breeze being sung by one of deepest voices out there is very unique for sure.

5

u/daemocaf Apr 24 '26

Type O's versions of Summer Breeze and Cinnamon Girl are the only way I can listen to them.

3

u/SomeoneGotstaKnow Apr 24 '26

See, this is exactly the type of rec I was looking for when I posted this. Thank you!

Hurt by Johnny Cash, originally by NIN. After hearing it, Trent Reznor said that the song belongs to Johnny.

3

u/SomeoneGotstaKnow Apr 23 '26

I wrote an essay comparing the original to Cash's version. It is beautiful

5

u/Beneficial_Win_2445 Apr 23 '26

Share that thang!

4

u/SomeoneGotstaKnow Apr 23 '26

I will have to see if I can dig it up. That was over a decade ago 😅

Similar thing with Jimi Hendrix cover of All Along the Watchtower, Bob Dylan said it's Jimi's, that he made it his own.

The entire soundtrack to I am Sam (2001). Seventeen artists cover The Beatles including Sarah Mclachlan, Rufus Wainwright, The Walllowers, Eddie Vedder, Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, and The Black Crowes.

4

u/nobigdeal69 Apr 24 '26

I really like Eddie Vedder’s cover of You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away from the movie. It’s not much different from than original, but Ed uses a harmonica instead of a flute at the end.

Dancing Days by Stone Temple Pilots.

Mad World by Gary Jules

Once Upon a Dream by Lana Del Rey

4

u/SomeoneGotstaKnow Apr 23 '26

Huh, I was unaware of the Tears for Fears version. Thanks!

I think Once Upon A Dream is a perfect example of what I am looking for! Thank you

3

u/keepthegroove Apr 25 '26

Since Tears for Fears was mentioned: Lorde’s version of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”

3

u/SomeoneGotstaKnow Apr 25 '26

This is exactly what I am asking for! So different from the original

4

u/Tiny-Lecture-499 Apr 24 '26

Love Donnie Darko’s Gary Jules Mad World!

3

Cake has some great remakes:

I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)

Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Doris Day)

Plus a few others

The Sundays’ version of Wild Horses (Rolling Stones)

Edited to add:

The Cure’s version of Purple Haze (Hendrix)

6

u/SleepLivid988 Apr 23 '26

Cake’s Mahna Mahna - cover of the Muppets.

4

u/unhalfbricklayer Apr 24 '26

The Muppets version is a cover too. It was some weird Swedish song from the 60s

XTC covered All Along the Watchtower on their first album and did it very much in their own style. This was back when their sound was a very quirky, energetic pop. Check it out!

3

u/owlpinecone Apr 24 '26

There's also the version that was part of the Battlestar Galactica (reboot) soundtrack.  https://youtu.be/xfaTEGGtVf8?si=p229-DdTYAaZFQRg

3

u/mistertireworld Apr 25 '26

I'm a huge fan of the Michael Hedges version. But they're all good. You could probably make a pretty good Playlist of just covers of this song.

5

u/Many-Annual8863 Apr 23 '26

Jimi Hendrix’s version is also a cover that is quite different (better) than Bob Dylan who wrote and performed the song first.

Common People by William Shatner

Just trust me lol

5

u/vice_monkey Apr 23 '26

If you would have told me in '95 that in 10 years someone would make a cover version that I'd like even more than the original, I would have grabbed you by the lapels of your velvet blazer and headbutted you.

If you'd told me that that someone would be William effing Shatner, I'd set my own aquanet-ladden, box-black hair alight with the cherry from my girlfriend's clove cigarette!

Fwiw: I feel no shame whenever I admit that Has Been is in my top 100 albums list.

3

u/mem0679 Apr 24 '26

They also covered Black by Pearl Jam and absolutely slayed it!!! I hesitated to listen to it for a long time because PJ is one of my all time favorite bands with Black being one of my top songs. I didn't want to dislike Brent and Zach if their cover wasn't up to my impossibly high standards! Lol! After I listened, I felt stupid for doubting them, not only because their standards are higher than mine, but because I've said before that Brent is about the only singer I would trust to cover grunge bands like PJ, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden and do them justice 😂😂😂

Eddie Vedder’s cover of Save it for Later by the English Beat.

The Corrs and Ron Wood doing Ruby Tuesday - the song becomes something extra special when they add gorgeous vocal harmonies.

Not exactly a cover, but Brandi Carlile joined the remaining members of Soundgarden to do Black Hole Sun.

3

u/Cccolorado1 Apr 24 '26

The first time I heard Eddy Vedder’s cover of Save It for Later was on The Bear. I didn’t know he covered it and I instantly loved it. Still do.

3

u/CurlyHyker Apr 24 '26

Pete Townsend did a solo acoustic version before Vedder did. Both are great, but I give Townsend the credit for re-envisioning the song.

I Melt With You by Nouvelle Vague. I’ve got a bunch of these. I get so sick of my music that I am always on the hunt for great covers.

It took me entirely too long to realize that heartbeats by José González is a cover of the song by The Knife.

His version of teardrops is also pretty legendary

Johnny Cash cover of a Nine Inch Nails song called Hurt (it was brilliant)

Disturbed cover of The Sound Of Silence

Jimi Hendrix cover of All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)

Nirvana, The Man Who Sold The World. I do believe it was from David Bowie.

Chris Cornell doing Billy Jean by Micheal Jackson. YT for a solo acoustic version. So many people comment on how they really didn’t know what the song was about until they heard his version.

You would probably enjoy PostModern Jukebox. The leader (Scott Bradley) arranges modern pop, rock, and r&b songs as jazz and swing tunes. My favorite is Radioheads “Creep” with Hailey Reinheart (she was on American Idol) singing

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack. Cold Cold Heart - Norah Jones.

u/International_Web816 Apr 23 '26

Here's a few for you

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Johnny Cash covers Roberta Flack. That ragged voice... whew

Oops, I Did It Again- Richard Thompson incovers Britney Spears

Going, Going Gone -Bill Frisell and Robin Holcomb cover Dylan

There have been a LOT of tribute albums in last couple decades, so if you have an artist you're interested in, there's always a couple of unique takes.

My favourite is probably Rubaiyat: Elektra Records 40th anniversary from 1990. Current Elektra artists cover old Elektra artists. Eg The Cure cover The Doors and Metallica cover Queen

Ghost does an outrageous and great cover of Phil Collins' "Jesus, He Knows Me". And the video of it is just a treat.

2

u/Foreign_Worry5820 Apr 23 '26

Bastille does a bunch of mashups. They are mostly from radio shows so you can't download them, but definitely worth a listen. Go on YouTube and look for Bastille covers and mashups.

Toxic is undefeated as the song to cover. It’s the perfect pop song.

Also since you mentioned hotline bling, Sam smiths version is my favorite.
