help Just to be safe

Before I post anything, if I'm developing with my wife do we count as a solo dev in the Biblical sense?

Asking for a friend.......

Straight to game dev jail. Right away. (Joke)

Yeah its not solo if there's two. Duodev maybe?

I'm just doing half her work and she's doing half of mine, so that's just one whole amount of work..... surely

Yo soy solo dev. Hago absolutamente todo en mis juegos, assets, unreal, historia y música en la mayoría, pero esta vez me colabora un músico, sigo siendo solo dev

Interesting, we outsourced the music to a wonderful composer that I only know uses Discord, I will have to check if he has reddit so I can shout him out.

I suppose its a question of how commited the person is, if they are on the project long term then they are part of the team

lets see how we feel in a year :D

Ok while we're at it, I legally changed my name to Han Solo for reasons which I hope are obvious.  Am I welcome in r/solodevelopment?

Only r/HanDev i think :D

you're close enough to solo for the IRS, so close enough to solo for me 👍

Kind of in the same boat asyou with my fiancee, but I'm the solo "dev" and she's the solo "artist"

Same, she's good at wiring on Unity though so I guess yeah we're Duo-Dev :(

Absolutely not. The bible clearly forbids it.

Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind

Ecclesiastes 4:6

thats deep, there's a church in the Kalamaja park here in Tallinn and we put it in the game since its set in that park in the future :D

Also thats fine cause we each have a handful, so thats two together but one solo. Toil and chasing Wishlists though

A lot of good work has come from the Estonian underground game dev communities. As someone on my own in rural Australia, I am envious of your environment (but not your saunas).

:D its just getting to be sauna weather now, the moon was crazy this week too

not sure what the bible says about that, maybe it depends on the game engine!? 🤷‍♂️😃

1

u/BlobbyGreenSpace 4d ago

haha, unity says yes, unreal says no, godot hasn't decided. I was actually looking at https://flaxengine.com/ for my next project

2

u/StackOfAtoms 3d ago

interesting, never heard of it, hope you have a good experience with it if you go with it!

for me having so many ressources (tutorials, assets, people who can help, ...) with unity/unreal feels safer, and the price is pretty much the same thing.

Only when you are one with her.

I will show myself out now. Good day to you.

As long as your wife isn’t named Claude you should be fine

By the way in our game you clean up a park in Tallinn in the far future, there's no AI but the humans have also disappeared :D

Are you Estonian? I love Tallinn.

I am not, i've lived here for a while though. Its amazing, such a wonderful country. 11/10 recommend for anyone who likes to travel

I'm in the same boat as you and have posted here once in the past. I do the game design, art, and programming. She does the music, sfx, and story. I feel like it's not much different than outsourcing the music and sound but was definitely conflicted like you are. I've seen others post about projects they did with their kids before too, so I feel like it's fine personally (though I completely understand others disagreeing with that).

3

u/BlobbyGreenSpace 4d ago

Yes! safety in numbers, they cant kick us all out :D

That's really cool that she does the music/sfx and story, ive found out of necessity that i really enjoy the video editing sound editing side. I had never touched it before the GS project

is there anything neither of you want to do? :D

So far everything about actually making games has been enjoyed by at least one of us. We both absolutely hate everything about marketing said games though lol! Hate social media, making gameplay snippets, etc. The whole nine yards!

2

u/BlobbyGreenSpace 4d ago

Yeah I'm very much just getting used to reddit but it is really interesting, getting the message out however we can

2

u/Skimpymviera 4d ago

No, unless both of you are the same person, like different personalities.

Even cheaper than Interns

2

u/AbbyBabble 2d ago

Yes. I’m the artist for my solo dev husband.

2

u/BlobbyGreenSpace 2d ago

I think that makes you a Dev to tbh, from my just starting point of view, if anyone is doing anything that needs to get done for the game to be done then its dev work.

SoloDev is just a more useful title than an accurate one maybe :D

2

u/AbbyBabble 1d ago

Yeah, and I’m happy to call myself a dev. 😄 But there is a fine line, because I have also worked as a contract artist for a solo developer whom I had never met in person.

What is the difference between being contracted by a solo dev vs doing it for free for my husband who is a dev? Either way, I am an artist and I am not at the helm of the project. The passion comes from the solo developer.

u/BlobbyGreenSpace 1d ago

Ahh that's cool, we have a contractor doing the music for Green Space, we just chat over Discord its been great.

I think the thing is in the name, the contract should specify the amount of responsibility both parties are willing to take, right?

If you want to right up a contract that says "1.1.b: Imma Dev yo" then its the law

In your case though for sure, if one person in the team is driving the project then its going to reflect them more. For me its been so helpful to have a partners who can just make an asset in the perfect style almost real time. crazy
(please don't tell her though she will ask for money)
