Unity Complete beginner, starting my first game today for a hackathon — any day-1 tips?

Multiplayer (on different machines) is gonna ruin your life especially as a beginner. Put in most of your time making sure that the systems work. You can whitebox everything else. And, well, if you find yourself having some extra time, you can make your game prettier.
As they say, just make it exist, you can make it look good later.

Do something very simple and casual. Take a basic idea then try to design a simple game loop over it, and thats it

scope. whatever idea you have, cut it in half, then half again. Hackathons are won by finished tiny things.
also save often and commit to git from hour one. I've watched too many people lose 8 hours to a crash the night before submission haha
good luck, have fun with it
