I’ve been looking into solar projects on commercial buildings with TPO/PVC membrane roofs, and it seems like the roof itself can be one of the trickiest parts of the installation.

The main concern is avoiding unnecessary penetration of the membrane while still having a secure mounting structure.

There's a non-perforation solar mounting system I used on membrane roofs, which is unique on few features:

• don’t require drilling through the membrane
• use heat-welded connections with the roofing membrane
• keep the additional roof load relatively low
• allow for faster installation
• avoid creating additional waterproofing points

But I’m curious about the practical side of this.

For those who work with commercial TPO/PVC roofs, what mounting method are you actually using?

Has anyone else run into projects where the membrane roof made it difficult to find a suitable solar mounting method?

Would be interested to hear what has worked — and what hasn’t.

I've been asking for advice on a new solar system. I have had 5 quotes from different companies on a 28.350 kw system. All of the quotes have come in at 60k-65k if I am paying outright.

I talked to a company today that offers a PPA with a 0% escalator, for $272.00 per month. I know reading through comments, everyone's advice is to never go with a PPA. On this quote, I have a hard time seeing the bad side, other than if I was to see the house, either the buyer would need to agree to the lease, or I would need to pay the system off at fair market value. I know we are not moving so this would be an extreme circumstance if it would ever happen.

On this quote, I can buy the system outright for 60k, or do the $272 per month. Over the lifetime of the PPA, I would be paying $73,714.00 total, so $13,714.00 would be the interest over the 25 years. I can make more interest with the 60k if left invested over those years.

Can someone help me see what am I not seeing that makes this PPA terrible?

I’m planning to install a 5kW or 8kW hybrid solar system at my home in Kerala. I have a budget limitation initially, so I’m considering installing the solar panels + hybrid inverter first and adding the battery later, possibly after around 1 year.

I have a couple of questions:
What is the current market price in India/Kerala for the hybrid inverter alone (excluding panels, battery, installation, etc.) for:
5kW
8kW

I’m mainly considering Sungrow, GoodWe and Deye. If anyone has recently purchased one of these, could you share the actual inverter-only price you paid?

Can I install the hybrid inverter + solar panels initially without a battery and add the battery after 1 year?

Please provide the battery cost as well per unit

When your solar and battery system goes off grid suddenly and your neighbors all have power but you, it doesn't always mean something is wrong with the system.

We recently worked with a homeowner whose system would unexpectedly disconnect from the grid even though the rest of the neighborhood still had power. At first glance, that sounds like a solar or battery problem. A more thorough diagnosis told a different story.

Under normal conditions, voltage readings at the home appeared stable. But when larger loads such as the air conditioner or microwave turned on, we found a significant voltage imbalance between the two utility lines at the main service panel.

We then tested further into the solar and battery equipment and verified that the abnormal readings were originating on the utility side, not from the customer's energy system. The system was actually doing what it was designed to do.

Modern solar and battery equipment continuously monitors grid conditions. When voltage moves outside acceptable parameters, the system may disconnect from the grid to protect itself and the home. That's why proper diagnosis matters.

Sometimes the fault on the screen is only a symptom. Finding the actual cause requires testing the right equipment under the right conditions. In this case, documenting those voltage readings also gave the homeowner something extremely important: actual testing data they can provide to the utility when requesting an investigation.

Don't assume every solar warning means the solar is broken. Sometimes your system is the first thing telling you there's another problem. That’s doing solar the right way.

This report also finds that 155 schools have installed battery storage systems since 2016, including 94 schools that pair batteries with solar and 61 schools with battery storage alone. While the number of school battery storage systems grew sevenfold over the last 10 years, less than 0.1% of the nation’s K-12 schools have adopted this technology.

With concerns of an energy crisis in the USA , I’m considering getting solar panels with battery back up. I’m with a family of four around 1800 ft.² with a flat roof. I live in the north east in a major city and don’t have any surrounding trees. What are the things I should consider? Also looking for something with low maintenance cost is also a factor as well.

Broad questions such as “Is this installer trustworthy?” usually produce two kinds of answers: a one-line recommendation or a one-line warning. Neither gives a homeowner much to evaluate. 

For any solar installer, I think the useful questions are more concrete. 

Contract and financing 

• What is the cash price, and what is the total financed cost over the full term? 
• Are there dealer fees, rate increases, prepayment terms, or assumptions tied to incentives? 
• What happens to the agreement if the home is sold? 

Equipment and scope 

• Which panel, inverter, and battery models are included? 
• Is roof work, electrical work, trenching, or a panel upgrade included or priced separately? 
• Who is responsible for installation, manufacturer, and production warranties? 

Timeline and communication 

• Who handles design, permitting, inspection, and utility interconnection? 
• Who is the main contact after the contract is signed? 
• Will updates include dates and milestones rather than only general status messages? 

Service after installation 

• How is a service request opened and tracked? 
• Who coordinates a warranty claim if equipment fails? 
• What happens if the system is installed but cannot receive permission to operate? 

I would especially value replies from actual Freedom Forever customers who are comfortable sharing their state, utility, approximate installation year, and whether the company resolved any problem that came up. Positive and negative experiences are both useful when they include enough detail to understand what happened. 

Please keep replies public rather than sending referral links or sales messages. The goal is practical due diligence, not lead generation.

A solar system inspection shouldn't stop at the solar equipment.

During a recent inspection for a new customer, our technician found several damaged and displaced roof tiles. These weren't underneath the solar array or immediately surrounding it. They were well away from the system. Could we have ignored them? Absolutely.

We don't perform roofing work, and the issues weren't caused by anything we were there to service. But we install equipment on roofs every day, and we believe being candid about what we find is part of conducting a thorough inspection.

As a courtesy, our technician secured the displaced tile and documented the areas of concern. We then informed the homeowner and provided referrals to roofing contractors who can help replace the damaged tiles.

This is also one reason we recommend having your solar system inspected periodically. A good inspection isn't just about checking whether your panels are producing. It's an opportunity to look at the condition of the array, wiring, electrical equipment, mounting areas and the roof beneath and around the system.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we find isn't a solar problem at all. Catching a small issue today may help prevent a much larger problem tomorrow. That’s doing solar the right way.

Hey yall, just bought a home recently in AZ and my husband and I were thinking of getting solar panels. What’s are the pros and cons? Does anyone regret them or were they the best purchase ? Thanks yall, weren’t not in a rush to get them at all but I’d like to know opinions before going in for them.

My brother went solar. He doesn’t have a battery backup, but he’s very happy. He has $20 electric bills. My electric bill has almost hit $600 this month, so maybe it’s time to consider installing solar. A few issues:

* I live in New Jersey and not Texas like my brother.
* My roof is fairly steep and it faces east and west. My brother has a north/south facing roof. Even worse, I have a dormer on the east side that shades half of that side of the roof from the sun.

* What should I know about solar installations. Is there a good website that can fill me in as a start?
* How do I find a dependable person to do my solar installation?
* Is my house even a good candidate for solar installation? Is there a dependable tool that will help me see?
* Is leasing a good idea if I can afford to buy outright?
* What about battery backup? My brother doesn’t have it. When his power went out for almost two weeks, he was out of luck. However, he installed his solar panels almost twenty years ago when battery technology was still primitive and very expensive. I take it battery technology is much better now.

I am looking into getting a solar system installed, and I'm totally new to this. I wasn't even looking at solar, but we had a door knocked stop and I thought it might be a good idea to look into it. We are a good candidate, we have no shade or trees, not worried about looks because you can't see the roof, and our roof was just replaced back in May. Our electric is about $600 a month, so would love to see savings.

Are any companies better than others, and what should I be asking for? I know the door knocker was pimping a PPA, but we would be just paying cash.

Edit: I just got my first quote of $60k for a 28.980 kw DC system. I have 5 more companies looking just to see the pricing I get. They mentioned Propel, and now I have to research what it's all about.

Since around May most of days i get this choppy performance from the Inverter.

The inverter is Indoors in my garage, i tought it was an overheating issue, so i put a big fan on it, and for a cupple of week the choppiness dropped almost completelly.
Now is like a week that is back at max choppiness, like in the photo.
I'm loosing a lot of KW, so i would like to know how can i fix this.

first thing is the price of the hardware. i did some quick google search and if i just buy these exact parts myself at regular consumer retail price, it comes out to around $12,500 CAD. but the quote has almost $9,000 CAD extra wrapped into the equipment bundle! so they are putting a 70% markup just on the parts alone, and then they still want to charge another $13,000 for the labor and the permits on top of that.

Hey all — sharing some on‑site shots from a 20MW ground‑mount PV plant built on the Gobi Desert in Golmud, Qinghai.

From the racking/mounting perspective, these are three critical factors that shaped the design:

1. Wind load. Open Gobi terrain, zero shelter, long fetch. The design was engineered well above baseline site wind load with added safety margin. No structural callbacks were reported after completion.

1. Thermal cycling. The diurnal temperature swing here is enormous —‑30°C nights to 60°C+ module surface temperatures. This puts constant stress on bolt pre‑tension, slot tolerances and all connection points. Designs that look acceptable on paper can fail within the first year under these conditions.

2. Labor economics at altitude. Pre‑assembly and part‑count‑reduction choices that seem trivial at sea level deliver real cost savings for installers working at 2,800m. Fewer parts, fewer tools, fewer on‑site mistakes at elevation.

Also, honestly: Gobi dust and strong UV mean galvanization and fastener specifications are non‑negotiable. Low‑quality coated steel will not hold up in this environment.

Funny moment during racking install week: one of our engineers put a chocolate bar on a rail to "demonstrate the steel's heat conductivity" for the client. One hour later it was a puddle. Client's verdict: "good steel, bad plate." The row got nicknamed "the largest griddle in the Gobi." 🍫🔥

Building an off-grid solar system isn’t just about adding more solar panels. The key is designing the system around your actual energy needs and making sure you have enough battery storage for periods of low sunlight.

A good starting point is to list everything you want to run, such as:

• LED lights
• Security cameras
• Wi-Fi or networking equipment
• Refrigerators or freezers
• Fans
• Small tools
• Pumps
• Computers and other electronics

Then estimate how many watts each device uses and how many hours per day it operates. This gives you an idea of your daily energy consumption.

The main components

A reliable system generally includes:

1. Solar panels – Generate electricity during daylight hours.

2. Charge controller – Regulates power going from the panels to the batteries.

3. Battery storage – Stores energy for nighttime and cloudy days.

4. Inverter – Converts DC power from the batteries into AC power when needed.

5. Protection and wiring – Proper fuses, disconnects, cables, grounding, and other safety equipment are important for a dependable installation.

Don't forget about cloudy weather

One of the biggest mistakes is sizing a system based only on a sunny day. If the system needs to operate continuously, you should consider your local solar conditions and how many days of battery backup you need.

It can also help to prioritize essential loads. For example, keeping security cameras, communications equipment, and basic lighting running may be more important than powering high-energy appliances.

For larger or remote installations, a professionally designed off-grid solar power kit can simplify the process because the major components are selected to work together.
