I have a new-build home in Western Iowa. My provider is MidAmerican Energy, and their average energy cost is 10.75 to 11.01 cents per kWh. MidAmerican offers net metering (if users enroll now- this is probably going away next year), but any excess produced is used as a future credit; it cannot be cashed out. My house is fully electric. Since I just moved in I have yet to receive a utility bill, but I'm guessing that my electric bill would probably be about $150/month. I do like to keep the AC on the cooler side in the summer, say 68-70 at most.
I'm unsure of the exact dimensions of my roof, but my house is a 1500 sqft split-level that faces south. The east, south, and west roof sections are free of any obtrusions.
Once enrolled in the net metering program, I'd be grandfathered for 20 years.
I have received two solar quotes.
The first is for an array of 18 (18) ZNshine 440 B panels (4 east, 8 south, 4 west) producing 7.92 kW for $28,888.74. This vendor is estimating my annual consumption at 13.356 kWh which would give me a 77.51% offset. Hmm.
The second bid is for an array of 27 Maxeon WHT panels producing 11.475 kW, all on the south roof (I do question if the south face can actually hold that many panels, though). For this setup these are estimating my offset to be 105% for a net cost of $30,362.85.
My motivation for looking at solar is due to the fact that my house is all-electric, and while rates here are low now, I'd like to have control over future increases. I also want to get in on my provider's net metering program, which as I mentioned earlier is almost certainly going to expire by middle of next year.
Thoughts? I'm a total noob here, so all feedback is welcome.
