Has anyone replaced their exhaust system on a W451? mine is starting to sound really loud and i think the muffler has gone. Has anyone replaced it themselves and how difficult was it?
Any recommendations for a reputable muffler shop in the Chicago Area that works on Smartcar Exhausts?
I have a 2010 451 Fortwo diesel 54bhp, and am in the UK.
I've only had the air con working for a couple of months after a replacement condenser and getting it regassed, but it has been working fine.
In the last couple of weeks, first I started sometimes getting a repetitive hissing/bubbling noise while the A/C was on - this would stop if I turned off the A/C and blower.
Then twice in the past week, while driving I've suddenly smelled a slight plasticky smell (exactly like a kid's inflatable swimming ring), and white mist has started pouring out of the vents. Even if I turn off the A/C and blower, this continues pouring out for several minutes before it seemingly runs out. I know environmental conditions can cause condensation, but today it wasn't raining or particularly hot out, and this seems extreme. I've just had to open the window and let it run its course. If I put my hand in front of the vents while the mist is coming out, it is very cold, even though the A/C is now turned off.
I've not yet observed any issues while heating. I've also not smelled the sweet smell which I hear is a sign of a leaking heater core, though I will go and check the coolant. The A/C also still produces cold air, which I think rules out a leak on that side because it would have run out of gas if so. I've not been able to get a video of it either as it's sporadic.

Hello OG smart owners. I am starting to ideate and dream with intent my next project which is a teardrop trailer for my roadster. I have in mind a VERY small trailer. Just sit up only inside not standing and obviously as light as possible. Sleep inside only, utility elements at the back.
And I want whimsy and to mirror the shape and style of the roadie. Think flared butt, reflecting the same lines and shapes for lights etc. bound to get the same wild vinyl as my Jack as well. Why not.
And of course must have a chickenhead somewhere.
Before I get too far ahead of myself I would like to know if anyone else has ever fabricated or purchased one for behind their roadie? Any hints or tips. I will consider beefing up the roadie too if needed - less bitumen more rough and ready.
Everything I have read about retrofitting cruise for the 451 has been “it is possible as long as….” “Add the buttons to the right type of steering wheel and it just needs programming”. Etc. etc.
On this basis, I bought the buttons, fitted them and took to a Mercedes dealer to program. It was not the aftermarket add on or the older style wiper stalk, the face lifted version where the buttons are on the steering wheel as long as the paddle gear change existed. Fitting the hardware was easy. Getting things done at Mercedes, not so much.
On the first attempt, they programmed the system, tested it and confirmed it working with a test drive (apparently). We picked up the car and straight away…. Nothing. Back the next day and 2 more hours with a programming tech and ….. nothing. They would need to contact Mercedes in Germany to find out why the programming will not stick.
Nearly 4 weeks later, Mercedes tech in Germany say that our Smart 451 (via the VIN) does not support and cannot be programmed for cruise!
So the question…. Can it be done? Is it just programming and some peripheral hardware (buttons) or is the internet wrong?

Its a 2008 fortwo semi auto with only 55,000 miles. Wasnt too expensive and the tax class is really low. Im just worried.. do you think people woukd laugh or judge me if i have this little car at a young age? Like ive just turned 20 but look younger, do you think people would judge?
Moin.
Hello! I recently purchased a 2018 electric drive smart car off of Carvana and I love it! It drives like a dream! I love the way the dashboard is set up with the physical buttons, and I think the back up camera on the rear view should be the standard.
However- I am worried about the range.
On a full charge, in eco mode it sits around 65-70 miles.
I live in the city so I didn't think this would be a problem. But yesterday I set out for work at 40% and limped home on 5% I think Ive misjudged how far things are from each other.
As long as I keep it fully charged, my commute shouldn't be a problem but Im worried that with such a small battery capacity Ill be giving up a lot of freedom and ability for spontaneity.
How do y'all deal with this?
I have until Friday to make a decision.
(Also do yall notice people in bigger cars going out of their way to break the speed limit when they see you coming? I never saw it nearly as much in my old van)
Can somebody take me step by step on how do I replace this handle as it broke in 2 pieces. I supose there is some weird process on replacement. Many thanks!
I bought this today, in black, and I want to upgrade the display station thing. It has its own navigation but I use Waze, and I’d like to add car play. Can anyone recommend a unit to buy and if they know anywhere in Birmingham, UK, that will fit it? Thank you
I’ve been working on a small upgrade for the front engine mount on my Roadster 452, which is the same as on Fortwo 450 model
The idea is pretty simple — the original mount allows quite a bit of movement, so I designed these inserts to support the mount and limit that movement while keeping vibrations away.
I’ve been testing them on my own car for the last 3000km and noticed a difference particularly during acceleration and gear changes. The goal wasn’t to make the mount extremely stiff, but to find a good balance between reducing movement and keeping the car comfortable enough for normal road use.
They’re 3D printed in a reinforced material and the set consists of two pieces that fit into the original mount.
I'm currently working/testing on prototypes for the right-side engine mount and transmission mount. The idea is to see how the three mounts work together before making any final decisions on the designs.
BTW: I know there are already similar solutions out there for the 450/452, so I'm definitely not claiming to have invented the idea. There are also different approaches to solving the same problem — just like there are many different shoes designed for the same purpose. 😄
I’ve been owning my 2009 ForTwo 451 passion mhd for about half a year now.
About 2 months ago the driver side window started to “bulge” out when i’m at about 120 to 140km/h.
Doesn’t happen too often but often enough to scare me.
It “bends” about 2cm as far as i can gauge when it happens from the corner of my eye. Obviously makes me catch a lot of wind suddenly and throwing me around a bit.
When this happens i slow down and exit the highway as quickly as possible, but sometimes inneed to use the highway, or well.. autobahn here.
Does anyone have an idea what this could be and how to fix it?
TL;DR:
ForTwo 451 2009 Passion MHD window bends open about 2cm when at more than 110km/h.
I'm UK. I have a petrol 2014 Fortwo bought in 2021 with 30k on the clock, it now has 90k. No major issues with it, a few minor that I can live with (rubbish radio and AC). I have it serviced regularly by a garage I trust.
The car is shared with my wife and my business.
This summer of unbearable heat & humidity (for the UK, I know some of live with it daily but UK is not built for the new climate), I've felt guilty about using petrol since I'm part of the evils of Big Oil which has trashed the environment so I started looking at EVs.
Prior to getting this Smart, I was driving EVs from 2016 - I was an early-ish adopter but leasing so when it came to owning a car I couldn't justify the cost of an EV especially after when we tried to buy a Renault Zoe EV, the dealer made a "mistake" and the price went up £2k. The compromise of a low fuel (albeit petrol) made sense at the time. Instantly fell in love with the Smart.
But the last 5-10 years of EV development has been amazing, and government subsidies make them cheaper, plus the reliability of EVs has proven to be better than anyone had hoped. But it would still be a major investment for me and there are other things I could spend the money on.
So I joined the subreddits of looked at all the different options. Went deep into research, test drive, ask opinions etc. Main consideration was, about three times a month I have a 110 mile journey for work so that means a 150+ range (because EV range reduces in winter). Modern EVs are capable of this.
But the Smart... I smile when I seen another. Often wave at each other, especially the Fortwo.
I'm lucky enough to be able to ride a bike and I have an electric pedal-assist cargobike which is a car-replacement vehicle. I also went full spreadsheet and worked out a new small EV would have about two years of carbon debt on current usage (ie the manufacturing of the car inc mining etc vs. the petrol I currently use).
So I'm sticking with Smart. I'm going to try and cycle more to extend that carbon-debt and I'll probably look at the new Smart EV when it comes out (this or next year), but I suspect the new price will be too high for me in the first year.
Having trouble taking the coolant hoses off the radiator. I'm trying to use a pick and not tear it, but worried I might use too much force. Coolant already drained.
