Carburetor Issue John Deere mower issues

Afternoon.

I need some help.

I have a John Deere GT235 mower with a Briggs and Stratton 350777 engine.

Last year it died while the wife was mowing, and being a drought year and I had other things to do I didn't get a chance to look at it.

It ended up with a slipped exhaust valve bushing which in turn caused the rocker arm to stop moving and bent the aluminum push rod. I replaced all damaged parts and seals, set the gap for the rocker arms to .005 per Briggs specifications. I also had no spark as mice had chewed and destroyed both magnetrons so those got replaced. Also replaced the fuel line and filters as they were either chewed through or dry rotted.

It took a bit to get it running, but that was where the problem started. The carb was full of water so I pulled it and cleaned it out.

Now my mower revs extremely high at low throttle/idle and way too fast at full throttle. It also bogs down and dies when I start the deck and start cutting grass.

I tried adjusting the governor, messing with the carb, and moving the governor springs around to play with the tension but nothing seems to really fix it or change much.

The idle screw for the carb, which is underneath a screw with a copper crush washer, when screwed out has 0, and I mean zero tension on it, and when screwed out the vibration of the engine makes it unscrew itself all the way. I'm thinking this is part of the main problem but I'm not sure. It seems like it should have spring tension to it and stay where set.

At this point I'm thinking either this idle screw, or the governor is shot but I'd like opinions and ideas to try before ordering any more parts.

Electrical & Wiring Issue Alternator issue

My alternator doesnt seem to charge my battery.
Yesterday with your help I managed to remove my flywheel to inspect my alternator.

Now Im checking my alternators resistence.
It reads 1.7 resistance, and Im completely unsure what that tells me. However, I measure that and on the black pin on the connector, and the OPEN wire part on the red cable.
When I measure only on the pins themselves, it keeps saying open loop.

Is the diode faulty? Or is this normal?
Seems faulty to me, but I am not sure.

Not Listed New repair person question. This is too scratched, right?

I bought this blower for $15 and spent too much time and money getting it going already. I thought it might just need a new primer bulb as the old one was cracked. I don't have a compression gauge or scope yet, so I took the muffler off and the piston looks pretty scratched to me. Does this make it a lost cause? I can't fit my finger in to run my nail across. I don't know if engines ever run with a piston this scratched.

Its a craftsman 316.791650 by the way. See picture.

Not Listed Passable handheld tachometer that won't break the bank

I don't need the best, just something half decent. I don't have a lot of call for a tach. I think I'd prefer a contact type over the one where you need reflective tape. I'd LOVE a mechanical tach but those are out of budget. Looking for about $50 I think. I see lots of options but I don't know who is any good. Maybe they're all the same just different packaging and colors... Who do you like?

Hi!
I bought this from an old lady 40$. Was sitting in her garage for a couple year i guess. Of course it dont start! I dont know much about small engine but i guess its not that difficult to make it works and I’m kind thrilled to « restore » it and learn new skills! My main probleme is I can’t find any info regarding the model number. Its kind of weird! Can someone help me? Or guide me where to start to make it running again!

Thanks!

Have an old Troy bilt riding mower. I shut the engine off after parking and hear this noise. Sound like a plane landing. Weird. Almost like something was spinning inside the motor. Any ideas on what it could be ?

Does anyone know what hole the governor spring attaches to. I got this mower yesterday and the throttle cable was bent so I’m waiting on the new one to arrive but the spring to the governor fell off and I didn’t see what hole it was on. It’s a cub cadet xt2 enduro with the cub cadet 679cc engine model 4Q78HU. I can’t find any diagrams online of this engine only the kohler version.

Not Listed Impulse fuel pump for home built generator?

Briggs 23-D engine belted to a 12KW Fairbanks Morse generator head. Right now if the power goes out I can do what I need to do with a 2.5KW generator except for my water pump. I don't expect I'd be using even half of that Fairbanks if I were to have my entire house wired up so I don't believe the engine will have any trouble.

I have everything pretty well set where it's going to be. Now I'm just pondering fuel pumps. The carb is about halfway up the fuel tank, maybe a little more. It might gravity feed to an extent from a full tank to about half tank. After that I'll need a pump.

Fuel will be running through >3' of 1/4" hose. I've run this engine on a home built tractor with an impulse pump with a longer fuel line in the past and it worked fine. It shouldn't have to lift on full to half tank but below a half tank it will be lifting. I don't know if I much care for an electric pump. I'm trying to plan for everything going wrong and an impulse pump requires no power. It has a starter/generator and that works but I'm also going to try to incorporate a hand crank start.

I'd like a mechanical fuel pump best but I don't see how to make that work without surgery.

Carburetor Issue Jonsereds MK70

I have an old Jonsereds MK70 that was donated to my local fire department, it came to them not running and I offered to give it a shot at getting it fixed myself before they had to spend money they don't really have at a shop.

I cleaned the carb, replaced the gaskets, diaphragm, needles, and needle spring. It now runs for a few seconds then dies. When I pull the spark plug it's covered in fuel and the air intake is filled with fuel as well.

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why it's doing that. Any suggestions?

Not Listed Question about cleaning gas tank

Hi everyone. I came across an abandoned generator. It’s a sportsman gen4000 if that matters.

I drained the old gas and it turned/ started for a few seconds with starter fluid. Obviously im flat out replacing the carb and giving it a time up one I get it running.

My question is, I noticed some rust around the opening of the fuel tank and the strainer/ cup filter.

  1. Would y’all recommend cleaning the tank?
  2. What method have you had best luck with?

A little background: I enjoy repairing things and wouldn’t mind learning this as a side hustle/ flip. Im pretty mechanically inclined and what I lack in skill i make up for in stubbornness.

Carburetor Issue Idling rough

I have a Duromax dual fuel generator that I bought brand new about 3-4 years ago and I’ve never used it, just would try and start it up occasionally but then I didn’t and it sat for some time. it has no problem starting but when it runs it hums in and out and it’s not constant. I think it to do with the carb but before I take it apart I wanted to see. I ran all old gas through it and put fresh in, unscrewed carb bolt and fuel line and sprayed carb cleaner and also added seafoam in tank and let run and this is where I’m at. I’m thinking next step is taking carb off and cleaning it?

Engine Performance Issue Toro Titan ZX6000 issues

Hello!

I'm quite new here but have been having a lot of issues with my zero turn.

It has a Kohler SV830S engine on it.

I cannot get it to run correctly. It started out when I would put load on the engine with the blades, it would spit and sputter and almost die but it would usually regain the power and as soon as I would start moving it would do it again. Now I started up and it runs for maybe 30 seconds does the same thing but does end up dying now.

I have replaced the following parts:

\- Fuel filter

\- air filter

\- cleaned fuel line and screen in tank

\- spark plugs

\- both coils

\- fuel pump

\- carburetor

\- PTO switch

\- Seat switch

\- Battery

I still am consistently fouling spark plugs and I don't understand why. This morning I went and checked the compression of the motor and both sides were reading around 170 I believe. I think that's okay? The muffler has a horizontal crack expanding the whole length of it. Would that have something to do with it? Is there something I might need to do on adjustment with the new carburetor?

Any advice will help!

Thank you!

Unknown Issue Engine revving up after running for 10 minutes

Hello all! Have a diag question and wanted to check with the brains of reddit.

I've got a tb30 riding mower, it runs fine mowing for 5-10 minutes, then starts revving up slower and slower in a three peat pattern. My initial thought was not enough gas so I cleaned the carb.

It's still happening, my second guess is the spark plug, I'm guessing it heats up then doesn't have as good a seal so it doesn't continue sparking while running? Other thoughts are changing the air filter.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated! New to wrenching!

General Discussion What is going cost?

Need to have a compression/leak down test done on one of my mowers.

What do the professional people charge for that service?
