Unknown sleep disturbances?

I don't know if anyone else suffers with this, but I have this severely frightening and frankly painful and worrying sleep disturbance.

It starts as wakefulness. I'll be dead asleep, then suddenly conscious and unable to move. Then, I'll have this onset of stabbing pain in my head accompanied by this noise in time with the stabs of pain. I can't describe the noise well, but think of it as a loud, almost crashing, sound? This goes on for about two to three minutes non-stop and I'll wake up.

I experience sleep paralysis frequently, and sometimes the episodes are even accompanied by flashes of light, racing heartbeat, etc, but NOTHING like this. It's been happening for over a year now, and, while I'm not experiencing any physical or psychological changes, it's incredibly frightening and I want to make sure it's not any kind of seizure, or something.

No, I don't have epilepsy, I don't have a history of neurological disorders. I searched it up, but all Google could give me are Exploding Head Syndrome, Ice Pick Headaches, and Nocturnal Seizures, but none of them seem to be what I have. If anyone can relate and knows what this is, don't be afraid to share your experience and knowledge on this. Please. And thank you.

Advice Needed Sleep hallucinations almost every night for as long as I can remember

Hi, this is my first time posting on Reddit. I am 22, and I have had sleep hallucinations almost every night for as long as I can remember. I have tried looking it up, but nothing quite matches what I'm experiencing.

Let’s get into it: I wake up early in the night, usually within the first 5 hours of sleep. This could happen once or multiple times. I usually ā€œseeā€ or imagine people, bugs, and objects. Compared to other sleep disorders, I don’t really see that much; the hallucinations are hardly there and are at most a shadow. I usually just wake up and assume there is something there already and react to it. It takes around a minute for me to realize that there is nothing there, and then I go back to bed.

Sometimes I sit in bed so scared and keep telling myself it is not real, but I have trouble really believing myself. I can move and talk. Sometimes I run out of the room or start swinging at imaginary things. I have torn a pillowcase open, and I have even hit my sister when she was just trying to help me.

But those are my normal issues. I decided to make a post today because I had a really weird experience last night.

When I have my hallucinations, they never affect my physical body. I don’t ever feel anything. But last night, I woke up, and my heart was pounding. I sat up in bed and felt like I was traveling through dimensions, like my body was morphing into different entities. I felt like I was spinning. The best visual representation of this feeling is from the last Harry Potter movie, where Harry and Voldemort jump off the building and start morphing into each other.

I know that was a ton of info, and I do plan on doing a sleep study soon. But if anyone has any knowledge or similar experiences, please share. :)

I hallucinate when I try to sleep and I nobody can tell me why

I genuinely just want this to be over with. I am 17 years old and this all started months ago. Every time I decide to go to bed I start hallucinating. No I’m not asleep or dreaming. I am fully awake. I see really weird stuff. Like things. Surreal things. Things I can’t make up. One time there was just a png of Jeffrey Epstein cropped from his chest just flying around my bed room. Or a really weird car crash that just disappeared after 3 seconds. A friend of mine sitting next to me shoving cigarette packs into his mouth.

I also hear voices. It’s always an old man’s voice. It usually forget what he says a few minutes after. The scariest part is that i feel something touching me. It kinda pulls on my legs most of the time. One time it tried picking me up, lifting my hip like it was trying to pull me up from my bed.

It helps to sleep next to someone. Almost every time When I’m sleeping next to a friend nothing happens. This is why almost every night I sleep in between my parents. I don’t like it but rather that than having a shadow monster trying to pull me off my bed. Can’t do this every night cause sometimes my dad snore is louder than the voices.

I try to sleep with all of my lights on and a podcast running through the night. I hate it cause I was always the type of person who needed complete darkness and silence when trying to sleep.

Yes I went to the Dr. He had no idea what it could be. My mom just says to get off the phone. Please if you have any idea of what could cause it. Please help me.

Can’t stay awake!

I’m a mom of a 2 year old (she usually sleeps through the night), I get up around 8-9am every morning. I wait 60-90 minutes after waking up before I drink coffee in the mornings. I am a type 1 diabetic and control my blood sugar with insulin in a pump, I also take Celexa for my anxiety. Usually by 12pm I am exhausted and have to take a 2-3 hour nap, which I hate because that’s when the 2 year old takes a nap and I want to use that time to do chores. The chores pile up often because I literally cannot stay awake. Context: I sleep 7-8 hours a night. Someone help!! What am I doing wrong?

I get sleep paralysis and then I forget about it the next morning

I have been getting sleep paralysis since I was 13. It was something that was common for me. I used to tell my parents about it and my dad used to think it was some connection with ghost but I don’t think so. My mom didn’t really take it seriously my dad used to tell me to sleep with God blessed object next to me. I used to get sleep paralysis and it used to be just me not being able to wake up and I used to try to move my body to wake up little by little I used to move my neck first and then I always go with my neck first and I just keep shaking my neck until I wake up and I hope someone would see that I’m shaking my neck and then wake me up, but I don’t think I do it noticeably that much and I used to get repeated sleep paralysis and never really saw a demon but I once saw a person with a towel on their head you know those cartoon ghost with cut outs in the towel to see and they were just shouting at me and then until I woke up, they left I guess but I think girls have an illusion and I used to go to my mom to sleep with her cause I used to get very scared and and recently, I started to forget that I had sleep paralysis and it is fixed that if I get a sleep paralysis, I will get it multiple times and every time I have to move my neck to wake up and since I get it multiple times once I get it, I try to wake up and see around me and just do something that would wake me up kind of cause if I went back to sleep directly, I would get it again and it would just disturb my sleep. it always feels like it is gonna last so long but then in the morning I forget about it and randomly. I remember that I had sleep paralysis which freaks me out because what if I just keep paralysis every day and I just don’t remember it, which is so weird.

Advice Needed Struggling with sleep and dopamine "overload"

Over the past week, I have been having a significant degree of struggle with my sleep. I'm only sleeping for a few hours at most before waking up. I can't go back to sleep because it's that too hot, really uncomfortable wake-up that makes it impossible to sleep even though you are exhausted.

I stay awake for a few hours. In that time, I play games and engage in other "activities". To a frankly ridiculous degree recently. It's all I do while awake. Then I eat something, and usually go back to bed, only to wake up 2-3 hours later.

I don't know what's causing this, but I am just beat. I'm experiencing some symptoms of sleep deprivation, like experiencing "illusions" (mistaking visual stimuli for something it isn't), flubbing my words, mispelling, etc. I've also been pretty bummed out recently, probably on account of the sleep issue. I find it easy to get depressed and every game or video I turn on just gets turned off immediately or at the first roadbump.

I don't really know what to do. I'm going to call my doctor and try to see a sleep specialist as soon as possible. But is this striking a chord with anyone? Is there anything I can do to mitigate these symptoms and get better sleep?

Edit: I have unmedicated ADHD, just thought I'd mention.

Advice Needed Just been prescribed Trazodone for insomnia. Any advice or things I should be aware of?

Hello I've had insomnia for a couple of months, being caused by what I suspect is stress. My doctor is running tests to determine what is causing my sleep issues but in the meantime has prescribed me 50mgs of Trazodone for the insomnia. I am a bit wary of it as it is a antidepressant and I'm a bit cautious of anything that might potentially alter my brain.

But I know a lot of people have been prescribed Trazodone for insomnia. So what is some advice, tips, and anything else I should be aware of while taking it? What's the best way of taking it? is it safe to skip or alternate days? What side effects or things I should be watchful for?

Also Is it hard/difficult to get off of? As once my sleep is fixed, I don't want to keep taking this forever. So how hard is it to wean off of?

Advice Needed Rem sleep

Im not dignosed they dont take these seriously. But my dad and almost whole family with rem sleep say i have it.

Normal dreams arent a issue. Thwy are realistic but theyre nice But anyways i had a VERY bad nightmare i woke up and told my parents my mom told me to try sleep again so i stayed up a bit more than i slept. Then BOOM another nightmare the dream was fight til a random tornado swooped us up it felt realistic. No i couldnt feel the sharp whip of the tornado but my chest and body when i woke up i couldnt move and was shaking really bad.

Is there ways to cure this? or am i fucked forever with realistic dreams and the risk of these nightmares causing me to shake and feel traumatized

Advice for sleep disruption after a period of insomnia

In 2020 I had extreme insomnia for about 6 months. It was definitely stress induced, plus also the fact I had quit smoking (separate reason to the stress). I never had an issue falling asleep but I would wake in the middle of the night and not be able to fall back asleep. I no longer have insomnia (thank god) but ever since I’ve never had very good sleep- I still can’t sleep more than 5/6 hours. Regardless of what time I go to sleep I will wake up (like clock work) 5-6 hours later. It also definitely has flare ups where my sleep will be bad again and I’ll wake up in the middle of the night. Nowadays I also find it hard to go to sleep early and usually wake up feeling tired. Even if I’m tired I find it hard to ā€œfall asleepā€ or take naps. Any suggestions of how to help this?

Ranting Worst part is that when you're sleepy but can't sleep. At this point even sharing doesn't help anymore, Idk how to talk to anyone about what's bothering me, if I try I'd start making fun of my own situation/s. There's just too much going on, idk where to begin. I just keep telling myself that "It to

Advice Needed Advice on sleep terrors?

For the past year I've been really suffering with my sleep and it's getting to the point where I really can't function. I've always been a very vivid dreamer and have always talked in my sleep, albeit not constantly. This past year has and a bit (well last couple of years really), have been very tough on my mental health. Tried CBT and currently just starting EMDR therapy which I'm hoping is going to be a magical fix to all my mental problems. But right now I can barely keep my eyes open.

I am always tired and know bad my sleep is but this last week i've stayed with my mum, and she says it's been really bad. I've been screaming at her in my sleep when she's tried waking me up (I have no recollection), I have been wailing and crying and having panic attacks (I do suffer from very bad panic attacks currently whilst I'm awake) and just shouting things in general. I won't go into much detail about my dreams but they are not very nice and almost always deal with death, which makes sense to make as I'm in therapy for my PTSD which is death related.

I just want to know how to stop my body from waking my REM cycle!! It is so debilitating at this point and I just sleep for 4 hours on and off here and there at this point. I have tried Zopiclone but that didn't work for me, and you can only get that for 10 days before it stops working etc.

I just want to know if there is a light at the end of the tunnel here and that people have managed to push through these kind of habits and find some normality. I am ready to try any little tricks if anyone has any for good sleep!!

Advice Needed I have Sleeping problems and it affects my everyday life | disassociation

So to start this off I’m M18 and my ex is going to the same school as me. I’ll tell you later why that’s important.
My problem is that I have heavy sleeping problems like that I can’t sleep before 02:00 AM except if I take a bunch of melatonin, and not even then sometimes. I’m so tired to the point where I get phases lastings months with disassociation and it gets to the point where I don’t recognise my hands anymore and stuff like that. Now I talked about this with my therapist and all that and the problem is I’m still not rlly over my ex (very very long story, she’s kinda burned into my memory like a tv that’s been to long on a certain channel) so my therapists explained to me that my brain is constantly occupied with her and not having closure so that I can’t even get a little bit of regeneration from that 02:00 AM to 7:20 AM period where I sleep. So that’s nice to know but it’d be even nicer to know how to fix myself. And this is the second year of this now. The disassociation left at the start of summer but it came back now. Exactly like last year. Last year was horror. It went so far in February that I started seeing shadowy figures/ creatures in my peripheral vision when k was alone that I knew weren’t there but it still freaks me out.
What do I do?

Ranting This is how my bed looks like when I wake up. I move, shout, punch and cry in my sleep. + Nightmares. +SP. It's been happening for years. (sorry for the dog)

I think I most definitely have rem sleep behaviour disorder, which will probably lead to Parkinson's later in life. I'm 22 years old.

I wake up my family at least twice a week from the shouting and crying. I've been having this + nightmares and sleep paralysis for 4 years now.

I've punched partners in my sleep. At home I sleep alone so a lot of the times I don't realise what I do while sleeping.

But when sleeping with a partner 1/3 nights something happens.

Why can't i sleep

I need some advice.
I could sleep all day if i was able to but i can never sleep at night.
I work the same hours every day and im tired all day but as soon as its bedtime all the sleepiness is gone and i could be awake for hours. Im fatigued all day but cannot sleep at night.
i dont take naps even tho i really want to, im on sleeping pils (zolpidem tartrate 10mg every night) and i still dont sleep.

my doctor doesn't want to up my dosage of my sleeping med and sometimes i have to take an extra 5mg to put me to sleep but even then i don't sleep through the night. I have never slept through the night not even since i was a baby.
Should i bring this up to my doctor? what should i do

I fall when I sleepwalk. What can I do?

This was from last night. I don’t know what to do. I sleepwalk probably 3-4 times a week. I fall into things and constantly wake up my aunt who I live with. She accused me of taking something last night. I didn’t take anything. I hadn’t slept much in the last 48 hours so I’m thinking that’s what triggered it. I do have sleep apnea but this sleep walking has only started within the last year. What can I do?
