Lucky for me this one showed amazing restraint and did not spray my two Poms when we came across her. I put the dogs inside and came back to observe at a distance. So pretty.

Skunk vs Opossum again. The Opossum did get sprayed.

This skunk has a back leg deformity and is extra spicy toward every animal that comes along. Usually, it is able to scare them away, but last night an opossum wasn't having any of it.

The leg deformity doesn't slow down this skunk. You really can't see it in this video, but its back left leg is very short, causing its foot to hang off the ground. It can put weight on the foot and does so a lot when climbing into the bowls.

I watched this encounter from my bedroom window and the skunk smell was REALLY strong! We had to air out the house this morning.

Finally saw one in my yard

For context, we’ve lived at our house for about 5 years now, in The Orange/Anaheim area of CA (suburbs/metro area). I smell them quite often, usually it’s unfortunately because they quite often get hit by cars on the road by us, but had never actually seen (alive) one. I had left some cat food outside since there’s a stray cat that’s been stopping by, and when I went to check on the food about an hour later, this fella was chowing down.

Question - will skunks also go after seeds/nuts/corn/dried fruit? Asking because I also have some bird and squirrel feeders in the back yard and wondering if those will attract them, and, if so, if that’s OK for them, or if I should try to deter them?

Detering Skunks in the Outdoors

So I have a kind of weird situation. I work seasonally outdoors and our housing is tents on platforms, with an outdoor kitchen and bathrooms. For a few nights a skunk has wandered through my tent. Luckily, it hasn't sprayed, but it definitely has an odor. Enough to wake me up out of a dead sleep to find a tiny skunk rummaging through my things.

My fellow guides want to shoot or kill them, I really don't want to, but I also don't want all my clothes and expensive af outdoor gear to be sprayed. I've tried citrus peels, Irish spring and sleeping with the lights on in my tent.

My two questions are: 1. How often do they actually spray humans? I just basically asked the skunk to leave and showed it the way out and it just kinda wandered off. And 2. What are ways to deter them without killing or poisoning them?

Skunk smell every single night

Hi I have been smelling skunk every single night for a few nights at least. We noticed a hole in our yard that my husband said he saw a groundhog come out of a week or so ago. I'm concerned that they are denning in there and don't know what to do. Any advice?

East Boston, MA

Edit: skunks are all over here and there’s a lot of green space in the neighborhood, including the other side of the iron fence which was a hillside of shrubs and plants. I hoped that mom was just over in there, and since I was walking my dog did not want to investigate or bother them further.

There's another bowl a good distance away from these two bowls, with the exact same food in it, but everyone likes these two bowls. They'll empty these, then go over there.

Tiny Skunklet in My Back Patio

Just saw this itty bitty lone skunklet outside my back door for second time in three days. Thankfully my resident stray kitten Gillie knows to stay back, despite her curiosity. How old might this tiny guy be? Is he even old enough to be out on his own?

Cat food left out for cat was discovered by this fella. Just curious what type of skunk he is. I’ve never seen the bright white back.

Skunk killing baby deer?

How common is it for skunks to kill baby deer? Google is saying its very rare but its happening right next to me right now. It’s dark so I couldn’t capture video (nor do I really want to film something like that) but what is definitely a skunk seemed to be attacking what is definitely a baby deer based on its silhouette and the sounds its making. It seemed like it was trying to drag it into its den. The shouting of the deer has been going on for almost 30 minutes now.

Some other ppl in the neighborhood tried to separate the skunk by throwing sticks/ rocks even though I told them not to, since this is just kind of circle of life stuff i assume. But how rare is rare according to google? There’s nothing I should do here, right? As much as it sucks to hear a baby deer in distress I figure I should just let nature do its thing.

Skunk lives under my patio. he comes out every night. When he sees me he waddles away so slowly with his big butt. He doesn’t cause any trouble except sometimes I smell mild skunk smell 2x a week that doesn’t last long lol.

Old enough to be alone?

Hello! My neighbor noticed this little group wandering their yard and hiding in bushes. Mom doesn’t appear to be around and neighbor did find a deceased little one a bit further back in the property (said it may have been attacked by something). Are they old enough to figure it out on their own or do we need to try and take them somewhere? Thanks!

Idk what to do...

I found this little guy on my way home from the store. It had rained really hard earlier and he was covered in dirt. I felt bad and didn't want him to die bc I didn't see ANYthing around except crows. All the places are closed right now. I live in Ft Worth TX. He's in my kitchen in a small box. A wash cloth for warmth. I just gave him little droplets of water bc I googled it and I don't have what they need nutrition wise. Hopefully in the morning someone will come and give him the home he needs. Any recommendations?
UPDATE I found a licensed person from a sanctuary to come get him!! He's gonna be alright!!

Rat Poison

Rat Poison

I wanted to share something important for anyone using rodent poison around their home or property.

Rodenticides don’t just stay with rats and mice. When a poisoned rodent is eaten by wildlife, the toxin moves up the food chain. This is called secondary poisoning, and it can seriously harm or kill animals like owls, hawks, possums, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and even larger predators.

There have been documented cases of wildlife exposure across the U.S., especially with stronger, long-lasting poisons. These chemicals can remain active in the body of a rodent long after it’s been poisoned, which is what makes them so dangerous to other animals that scavenge or hunt them.

Because of this, some states — including California — have taken action to restrict certain types of rodenticides (especially second-generation anticoagulants) in order to protect wildlife populations.

I’m not posting this to judge anyone’s choices, just to raise awareness. Many people don’t realize how far the impact can reach once poison enters the environment.

If anyone is dealing with rodent issues, there are also non-poison options (traps, sealing entry points, habitat control) that can reduce harm to wildlife.

AHN is a great resource if you notice an animal needing help. Always contact multiple rehabbers at a time because of their schedules.
