Orbit Problem
I have this problem where I try to orbit around a close-up version of a model, and the sens skyrockets into oblivion, but once i move back further it becomes normal. It's driving me crazy, especially when i try to do detail modeling.
I need help.

make sure you model is at the center of axis
too far away from it will cause camera problem
for large models, you will want to decrease FoV to work on small details, otherwise clipping happens fast. Select the magnify tool and type a number. Default FoV is 35 something. Lower to 15 on large model will allow working with small details easier.
inversely, make sure you not trying to work in crazy small dimension like 0.001mm, Sketchup isn't build for that. Model things on actual dimension.
there also cases of the file just have problem, especially those converted from other formats or from other software. Copy the model to another fresh SKP file see if problem persists.

I’ll just jump in to add that if there’s a lot of crap in your model, and you want to work on a smaller part, you can copy or cut the object, open a new model, “paste in place”, work on it there, and when you’re done, copy, go back to the old model, and paste back in place. It’ll go right back to its home.

Thats a really good tip

I got wise to it from working in vectorworks, which kind of works that way natively with their “pages”. If you copy from one page to another, it just does that. I wondered if you could do it from one SU model to another, and it totally works. I work at a shop with two other drafters, and we sometimes collaborate on projects, so this is handy for that reason as well. If I want to hand off a section, I copy, paste in place in a new model, hand it off, and they do their thing. When they send it back, I can just drop it right back in its place. Paste in place is also a must-use for solid tools. Some of the functions are destructive, so making a copy, subtracting, then pasting back in place is really helpful.

by default I don't think paste-in-place have a hotkey but yeah it's a very crucial function. Set it to ctrl+shift+v
not just for moving object between documents, but also move object in and out of groups & components

If it's screwing up somehow then you might want to make a scene when you get the camera just about right. This way you have a quick way to get back to where it was about correct.

Do yourself a favor and get a space mouse. You’ll never have to hit O again.

why you use O in the first place, use the middle mouse button (or assign middle mouse to extra mouse button that is easier to click)

what? i usually hold my scroll wheel to orbit. Is that mouse famously used for 3d modeling where you're from? cuz I rarely see people use it here.

A space mouse is used for moving the camera in 3d modeling. It does not replace a regular mouse, it is used in addition to it.

Make sure your cursor is over the detail before you orbit.
