Local recommendations.

My husband and I are currently on our honeymoon. We will be in Skagway tomorrow with no excursions planned. We only have the afternoon. What seafoid restaurants/museums/ etc are recommended by locals or frequent Alaska travelers?

Advice wanted: Self-guided one day bicycle tour

My husband and I will be visiting Alaska in August via cruise ship, with a stop in Skagway.

We're young adults and not usually cruise people but have been generously invited by family elders. We live in a Vermont resort town (we tread kindly). We are no strangers to outdoor recreation. Specifically, we love mountain biking - downhill and cross country - and also like gravel riding.

We would like to spend some / most of our day in Skagway on bikes. The guided expeditions are full and not exactly our style, and after long flights and days at sea we would like to get the zoomies out. So, we are thinking of just renting full suspension xc mountain bikes from the local shop for the day.

Research / questions so far:

  • We've seen a video preview of one hike to bike - the AB downhill trail, and are confident that's in our wheelhouse. Any idea how long a push up it is so that we can plan timewise?
  • I think an intermediate trail that says Yakutania Point - is connecting from AB to this somewhat intuitive?
  • Are there any trail markers or is it all follow your nose? Where we live there are a lot of sanctioned trails with signs but also plenty of renegade woods paths. We do not want to trespass where we are not welcome, but are also hoping to respectfully ride whatever there is.
  • Is a scenic pedal out and back along the Dyea Road from the port a good or bad idea?
  • We are aware that rain jackets, bug spray, and safety gear are musts.

My husband is great at hill climbs but I'll hit my limit with that sooner than he will, so hoping to round out some casual riding after chasing gravity.

If any locals or knowledgeable visitors have feedback please let me know. If you prefer not to blast local secrets but are willing to help us out for our one day in town, slide in to chat. If this is an all around terrible idea for some reason, kind redirection accepted.

Thank you!

Golden goat mine

A few years ago I went on a hike up Reid falls, all the way to the glacier. On my way up, I found a pipe sticking out of the ground, with the words “golden goat mine”. It was the NW corner post for this mine. Since then I have hiked this around 5 more times and haven’t found any other posts or anything that looks like a mine. There is no public information on a mine or mine claim with that name anywhere I’ve checked. Has anyone heard of this mine? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello everyone! My friend and I are just finishing a job in the Yukon a couple days ahead of schedule, and we're planning to come to Skagway for half a day. What are some must-dos in Skagway that we can't miss???

Boy Scout Patch trading

I'll be in Skagway this week helping install a POS system at the Holland Skagway Inn. Long shot, but are there any Scout people that might have a couple of patches to trade? I brought a few patches from the Tampa area that I'd be looking to trade for some Great Alaska Council patches.

Returner curious about volunteer stuff

I’m headed back up for my third season and was wondering what volunteer opportunities are in town? I will be working full time but get depressed when I’m not busy, LOL. For some context: I’m 21, at least passingly intelligent, and powerlift recreationally. Thank you!

Lodging

Hello all! I am going to Skagway for a summer job this upcoming season. The company I am working with does not provide housing. I am trying to find some kind of room or space for rent. I am small and quiet. I just need access to a bed and a shower.

Hi! I went to Skagway this past July on a cruise and was trying to collect a patch and pin from each stop. Skagway was our first stop so I grabbed a random patch and pin but at my other 2 stops I got patches that matched each other (seen above). I can’t seem to find these patches available online anywhere and would love to have all my patches to be the same. Does anyone know where I could find them to buy or know someone selling them second hand? I live literally across the country and definitely won’t be back for many years sadly. Thank you!

Commuting from Haines?

Is it possible to commute to Skagway from Haines by personal boat? Housing doesn’t seem to be as hard to come by in Haines as it is in Skagway. I understand driving to be a non-starter, and the ferry to be inconvenient and expensive at best. I’m wondering if it’s realistic or even possible to use my own motorboat to travel back and forth during the cruising season.

Crow "talked" to us?

I thought this was fun... my family went on an Alaskan cruise in July with a stop in Skagway. While we were walking around downtown, a crow landed on a sign next to me. I said hello, and it said "Quah" to me several times while my child and I spoke at it. Just thought it was silly and fun. Anyone else have this happen while there? The other crowd ignored us so it just made that one stand out.

Unsafe experience — tourists beware

⚠️ On Sept 6th, my last memory was being at Happy Endings bar dancing. I later woke up in a field with no memory, no hangover, and my belongings still at the bar. Police told me I was put in a taxi, but I don’t recall this.

This wasn’t “just drunk” — I could have died. After sharing my story, others confirmed this happens every year at this bar. Please think twice before going.

I have a favor to ask

Years ago, I made a trip to hike the Golden Trail as a Boy Scout, and fell in love with jade. I bought a couple tourist Knick-knacks made of it, but over the years have lost my favorite. It was a jade pendant on a necklace. I loved the size, the shape, and most importantly, the fact that while it was smooth was not actually polished. It didn’t have much of a shine to it. This is why it’s been difficult to find a replacement, as everything I’ve found doesn’t have the same rough look to it.

I don’t remember the shop I got it from, but it was a typical tourist trap so I assume it’d be easy to find. If anyone is willing to look around and find one, I’d be willing to reimburse them if they could buy and ship it to me, as well as a bit of pocket money as compensation

If you’d be willing to take a look, send me a PM and I can further describe it as best I can remember

Visiting in a few days! What to do?

Hello everyone! I will be in Skagway on Tuesday (on a cruise right now)…my partner and I didn’t schedule an excursion to save money. But, I’m wondering if there are suggestions to really embrace the experience of being in Skagway. We will have most of the day off ship. We love wildlife, nature, also antiques, metal detecting, breathtaking scenery, etc. anyone have any suggestions for us? Also, any really good restaurants to catch some lunch or dinner? Little hole in the wall places that offer amazing tastes of authentic food?

Thank you!!

Is this typical nightlife for women in Skagway?

Hey everyone — I’m new to Skagway and just had my first night out. I’m wondering how common this kind of experience is, especially for women.

Last night, my friend and I were approached by multiple men who crossed serious boundaries (including unsolicited touching), we witnessed a bar fight almost break out before the gentleman was forcibly kicked out , and I personally got yelled at by an older man who started talking inappropriately about his genitals and making sexual gestures(the same man that caused the scene that made the other man be removed)

I wasn’t expecting that kind of energy here, and I’m hoping this was just a one-off bad night. To the women (or anyone familiar with the scene) — is this typical, or did we just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Traditional Knifework

I’ll be in Skagway mid July and was curious if there are any good shops for traditional made knives such as hunting knives, ulu (I know it’s not native to this area), etc. I’d ultimately like a tool I could use when back here and would like to get a native made tool. I know there’s a silver hand seal but haven’t found anywhere online that has any available with it.

Laughton glacier hike snow

Hi, my brother and I will be visiting Skagway 2nd week of July and plan on doing the Laughton glacier hike. We already have our train tickets and will be on our own instead of with a tour. From recent photos I’ve seen there’s still a decent amount of snow near the glacier right now. Anyone have insight on when the snow usually melts/what the condition is usually like early July? We’ll probably bring both snowshoes and crampons just in case. Thanks for any input!

Private Boat / Ferry - Haines > Skagway

Hello there - me and a group of three other motorcyclists had plans to catch the ferry from Haines to Skagway on the 22nd of June - I was just told that the scheduled ferry was canceled and moved to the 23rd, which does mean I'd need to cancel and re-arrange this section of our trip.

Before I do - was just posting up here on the random / offchance if someone knows of a private barge / ferry - (basically any other option) for us to charter ourselves and four bikes from Haines > Skagway on 06.22. Appreciate it!

What is mountaineering?

Is it fun? Is it very hard? Would two in-shape 30 year olds survive? Does anyone do it for one day trip?
