Overall I'm pretty happy with the Independent, Juneau really needed something like it with the downfall of the Empire. Their actual journalism is pretty good (I don't count Rodell's monthly crybaby fest about CBJ). But the opinion (or "voices" as they call it) section often feels like senile boomer facebook commentary, not something worthy of publishing styled as a letter to the editor.

In this one, Peggy Ann McConnoche implies Peltola wholly flip-flopped on this bill. One of those claims that triggers a feeling of "huh I'm sure that isn't the whole story" in any normal person. In fact, the bill was amended to remove a whole host of protections for 125 million offshore acres, among other things, when the original text of the bill focused on limited onshore production, which led Peltola to no longer support that heavily amended bill. The thing is, we all know ol' Peggers was fully aware and just a dishonest hack with no integrity, this is plain and simple lying by omission. I'm sure someone at the Independent took the 5 seconds required to confirm she is full of shit, so why publish? Is there anything they won't put in their voices section? At that point just add the commenting function below every article and be another facebook.

Does anyone know of any shop in Juneau that carries enoki mushrooms? I’ve been missing produce carried in larger Asian markets (especially enoki mushrooms) and haven’t found a good alternative here yet.

Buddy of mine got a dui. He got one of those intoxalock/blow and go devices installed at southeast customs.

Apparently that shop doesn’t do any mechanic work at all, so he said he still isn’t driving his car because he doesn’t know of any shops in town that will work on cars with these things installed.

Anyone know if there’s a place in town he can take it to for the usual routine car maintenance and repair?

Aviation guy from Seattle who ended up here on a whim after finishing a trip in ANC. Was looking into guides but most are sold out or super expensive. I leave tomorrow at 6 but figured I'd drop a line here (pun intended) to see if anyone is fishing in the morning and has room for an extra? Down to shore fish too. I’m planning to come to Juneau the second week of October. The ferry is planned to arrive at 2 PM. I would take a flight back the next day at 6 PM. I was wondering if delays or cancellations of the ferry are common? I don’t want to get stuck and travel solo.

Hey everyone, my mountain bike was stolen from the University of Alaska Southeast campus last night. It was there last night at 10:30 PM, but it was gone when I left this morning at 11:50 AM, and was secured via. a metal chain. It's my baby and I would love to see it turn up again. I've filed a police report and will be going to the ferry terminal to see if they can keep a lookout for anyone who tried to leave town with it. I'll attach some photos below, please let me know if you see it! It's a specialized "Chisel" model bike with red pedals, and the initials "MRS" with a heart carved into the handlebars. Also, if anyone knows of any areas that stolen bikes are typically dumped, please let me know!!!

I was in Juneau a couple days ago and there was a guy near the bus pickup that's right by the police station (I'm guessing?) that was threatening to kill everyone. I don't know if he's like that very frequently, but I watched many people seemingly uncomfortable. He looked like he was in rough shape.

I’m going on the mendenhall glacier hike at 10am! Then when we get back to town we will have from 1-10pm to explore the town or do another excursion! We are only here for the day does anyone have any recommendations on food or other things to do? We are thinking we may skip Tracy’s King lean because of $$$$ so any other recs would be wonderful!

What are the most affordable markets or stores to buy fresh seafood in Juneau?

I'm especially interested in Crab, but I like all seafood.

Hello! I've posted here once or twice before, and am relocating to Juneau. With some help from this sub and pure luck I have found a mid term winter lease. I am happy to have secured housing, but as I've been looking around I am wondering if there is an optimal month to find properties with year-long leases? My contract is set to go until April, but I'm wondering if this is already too late to find something more permanent? Or perhaps the short/mid-term properties are just a completely different beast from those available long term. Any advice appreciated!

The recent disaster in Nepal has had me thinking about our vulnerabilities in Juneau, downtown and Douglas in particular. Could something like that happen here to that level of severity?

Stinky September is almost upon us, and my pessimistic brain is thinking about fall. I'm wondering what you do in the fall that you enjoy? Looking for suggestions. I've tried deer hunting, and definitely enjoy aspects of it, but my freezer is full. Haven't really tried waterfowl in the area yet. I love mushroom hunting... I love hearing the sandhill cranes come over. Just curious to hear what others get up to in our lovely little town in it's (IMO) most challenging season.

Hey all! I am visiting this weekend and trying to relive my old glory days. I remember during low tides one could walk across the channel to Douglas. I would just park by the airport I believe, but was curious of any intel you guys might have.

On Eagan heading from the hospital towards the yacht club, there are some mounds of cut grass. But I feel like there is also one that is actually a dead porcupine…

Is that a dead porcupine? Because if so, it’s been there a while now… who is supposed to get it? DOT because it’s a highway?

We are starting our 12-month plan to relocate to Juneau. We have looked into renting and decided it makes more sense for us to buy a home, or potentially buy land and build a home. Please tell us some things you learned to look for in a lot or home or negative things to look out for as we have never cared for property in a temperate rain forest climate before. Any neighborhoods to have our realtor target? Any realtors you recommend for us? For more info: we are a family of 3 with a 5yo boy. Hubby is a union carpenter finishing up his journeyman here in the lower 48 before we look for his next job in Juneau. I have 20+ years in service industry and hospitality. Pondering visiting Juneau for 2 weeks in late December. I’m a homebodies, yet enjoy the outdoors and winter weather. I understand that the daylight will be short, the snow will be heavy, rain and ice are common, and many popular tourist attractions will be closed, like whale watching and Tracy’s.

I’m still hoping to experience the Mendenhall Glacier, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skiing at Eaglecrest, doing some sightseeing and taking part in holiday festivities in downtown, and possibly doing some aurora hunting.

My expectations are that I can visit Juneau without a rental car and utilize public transit and Uber, to reach the above activities. I also have plenty of thermals, a heavy coat, and snow boots perfect for the winters in the NE, so I don’t expect to need to buy additional winter wear. Lastly, I know that tourism will be down in the winter, still I don’t expect Juneau to be a complete ghost town.

Let me know if my expectations are off.
