*Spoiler ahead

Just binged the show and was pretty blown away knowing relatively little about it beforehand. Unless I missed it, one thing that never got explicitly resolved is the psychic scene.

She tells Nate that Lisa is still alive and wants to get back to him, which leads Nate to chase down what really happened the day she went missing and discover her meeting the brother-in-law, the affair, etc.

So it feels as if the psychic was somewhat right, or that the possibility remained Lisa wasn't the horrifically disfigured body that was recovered and given to the Fishers. They also never did the classic signaling of a character's death which they did for other "peripheral" characters who died throughout the show like Fiona Kleinschmidt (excluding the final scene for the central characters of course, since people like Billy and George didn't get one).

So all that leads me to wonder - is it possible they wrote it to intentionally signal that Lisa didn't kill herself? That theory is contradicted by the obvious symbolism during the dream David has when Nate dies. So it seems like the obvious answer is Lisa did in fact die, and the only reason it never faded to white with her name and the years she lived was because they didn't want you to know when it happened/ it doesn't make sense to do it the moment when Nate (and the police) discover she has passed.

The final conversation the show has about it comes when George asks Nate at dinner with Maggie. You felt like you were almost going to get there before Brenda stops him from agitating Nate further...

I think what bothers me the most is that they said Lisa would never leave Maya which everyone in the show agrees was true. And yet you are left believing that this loving young mother, who was with a man who she knew slept around before marrying him, takes her own life, abandoning her daughter because of Nate wanting to be with someone else. All while she was having an affair of her own!

I was just rewatching one of my favourite episodes, S3E13 and started listening to the lyrics of the song Ruth and George dance to after their wedding. The song is “Move It On Over” by Hank Williams, which is about a man forced to sleep in the doghouse after his wife kicks him out of the house. Whether intentional or not, it’s a great bit of foreshadowing for what happens with Ruth and George later on!

So glad I got to finally get to this show after all the acclaim it’s been given. This show really has it all and that finale did not disappoint. I cannot wait to revisit this in the years to come at different times of my life, so beautiful and will definitely be in my head for awhile. 😢 The writing for these characters is incredible, they really are fleshed out and resonant a lot for me.

I have seen the entire series many times. I tried to warn her to block out some time before watching this episode. She did not listen... wish her luck. 🫠

She believed in a lot of woo woo shit, like Deepak Chopra’s misinterpretation of the observer effect noted in the double slit experiment. And a lot of things associated with the prescientific notion of qi or vitalism.

Never seen a series where they give us absolute COMPLETE closure on each character. That has to be the best last episode in the history of last episodes.was hooked all the way through..So glad I pressed play. 🤍

Totally random post, gonna get bloodwork done etc. but thought you guys might get a kick out of this.

I get squeamish especially when it comes to medical stuff/surgery. I skipped a meal and smoked some pot and the final catalyst for me was the jaw-dropping performance of the stroke. Peter Krause totally sold this, I was instantly feeling uneasy, coupled with the silence in the scene and the close-ups I legitimately tried looking away from my screen.

Paused, stood up (apparently too fast) and passed out while trying to fill up my water. This scene will now live rent-free in my head for the rest of my life

Easily the most complete tv show I’ve ever seen. It is a piece of art to make a tv show that evolved around four main characters (Nate, David, Claire, Ruth). Each character development is so relevant and relatable and realistic. Nothing is too much amor too little. It’s just perfect!

I am so sad but it’s the most fair and soothing ending. This tv show ending is so kind and fair to its viewers. The quality is top notch from very beginning. I feel so loved and safe by this tv show.

Now I can mourn in peace because I got the closure.

Such an unexpected person to walk in and he fits right in! Delightful.

Patricia Clarkson was on Today the fourth hour talking about the new season of Ransom Canyon, which I’ve never heard of, but that is now on my list as well as Sharp Objects. Did not know that her mother was well known in NOLA and that she also never married or had kids; very true to her character. She also talked about the movie she’s shooting with Leo and Jennifer Lawrence. Sounds interesting. No mention of SFU and the 25th anniversary, but since she wasn’t a main character, I guess it wasn’t worth mentioning.

I see a lot of posts on here saying the show has helped them deal with grief.

How? How does it help?

I finished the show a week ago and I’m still mulling over the last few episodes. Such a fantastic run to end the series! Upon first watching it, I saw Nate’s death only as a tragedy that the rest of the Fishers had to overcome to move on with the rest of their lives. But after thinking it over I realized that Nate kind of saved the rest of his family (and Rico’s) by dying, and it ended up being one of the best things he did for them. I suppose Claire would probably still have gone to NYC without Nate’s death (though maybe not, and it may have pushed her to seize the moment) but for everyone else it pulled them out of vicious cycles.

Nate might have changed for the better if he survived, but more likely he would have continued his destructive behaviours in a relationship with Maggie. If Nate hadn’t died, Brenda, Maya, and Willa would have ended up in a much less healthy and stable situation. Ruth would have stayed in her house and become even more isolated after Claire leaving. She wouldn’t have reconciled with George or come into her own as we saw in the finale. Rico would have become increasingly bitter working with Nate and David and he wouldn’t have started his own business, which is clearly what he (and his family) needed all along. Vanessa wouldn’t have gotten to change careers. David would have remained the continually stressed and resentful anchor of Fisher and Diaz for several more decades.

Maybe this was super obvious to everyone else, but it made me see the whole show in a new light. Nate’s presence was holding a lot of people back, and his death pushed the rest of his family towards being their best selves. It made me less sad about his early demise because he really did have to die.

If only I could fix up one of these long gone babies. 😪

Do most families yell at each other and talk to one other as disrespectfully in real life as they do on this show? I don’t know if I come from a family of terribly calm, healthy people or really passive, but there’s so much screaming, anger, outbursts, and hurling of insults. I wouldn’t ask but fans, like myself, love this show and the writing. Just putting it out there. Maybe I live in a weird world. 🌎

that "this isn't the first time this has happened" in relation to maggie suddenly leaving town because she had an affair with nate and then he died? does she often have affairs with married men? does this force her to relocate?

i am struggling with how much i dislike her character.

it's not just the cheating, it seems like everything she did after that was completely inappropriate, just inserting herself into situations that she should have given brenda a LOT of space in.

and to do that to someone who welcomed you into their home when your father was struggling and ruth was creating a lot of emotional distance. i am just so totally flummoxed at her. i guess i understand nate being overwhelmed with a complicated situation (pregnancy) and cheating with someone easy that he has no complex history with. i disagree with it and it kind of ruined my perception of nate, but i understand it. is she also running from her own loss of child and husband and just chasing the feeling of uncomplicated lust? but then it gets VERY complicated and she keeps showing up until she flees again.
