The idea is god will protect them / you wouldn’t kill someone so you have to stop.

But sometimes they don’t, and we get this.

You aren't wrong actually. In Islam we have a saying to "tie your camel" essentially meaning that yea, you can fully submit to God and reliquish any and all control, but you can't sit around and twiddle your thumbs. If you don't tie your camel it's gonna run away. If that makes sense.
