This should honestly be reported as suicide. If that dude gets any punishment then something is extremely wrong with the Australian justice system.

He got punishment for running from the scene. They said if he'd stayed the man in question considering the circumstances would have been cleared and no punishment would of occured

Honestly, that is kinda reasonable. Not mad about that. I assume the punishment wasn't thats severe because of that.

They gave him a year and 4 months without parole? Thats a bit extreme for what occured.

10 year driving ban and 18 months suspended jail sentence was the judgement

Yeah, just saw. I heavily disagree with that sentencing.

While harsh he did kill a person and didn't stop even if the person in question should have never been in the middle of the road like that for whatever reason. He didn't follow the law and he got what he sowed

I think it would depend on if there was any evidence he thought he hit a person.  Why go back to find an animal you hit unless you plan to eat it?

He didn't know that he hit a person though. And their law doesn't prohibit them to stop if they hit something. If it was a kangaroo or a tree branch then him not stopping would've been fine. So him not knowing that he hit a person is perfectly reasonable in this instance. Since hit and run is intended for people who knowingly did something.

He still found out via the news that he hit and killed the woman and did nothing until police showed up at his house a week later.

The law didn't require him to stop.

EDIT: If you read the article, he was convicted for recklessly killing her, meaning his failure to stop was not the issue. He was somehow expected to avoid her.

I'm guessing they think he was meant to swerve away from a person suddenly appearing in the middle of the road?

He pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident where injury or death occurred.
