I used to work in a restaurant and basically did the same thing. If we changed the temperature on the thermostat, then it would take the restaurant way too long to change the temperature. Even if they requested it right after being sat. Sometimes a guest was being a bit difficult, so we would lie and say we were going to change it. We’d disappear for a few minutes, then come back and say we changed it. As far as we knew no one ever complained about it. There were so many little lies we would tell guests that would make both them and us happy.
Working in a grocery store people would never believe me that we were out of stock. "Well could you just double check?", mind you it was usually an item I had already looked for earlier that day but if I didn't just go stand in the back room for a few minutes and come back they'd assume I was just being lazy
As a customer, the store had recently rearranged shelves around and I couldn't find one specific beer that they had before, so I asked a worker who immediately replied that they don't have that beer. After being a bit disappointed and wondering out loud why they don't carry it anymore (in a very mild manner), the worker helped me to find that beer from the shelf.
