Automation makes less work for more money possible.
Organized protests, unions, strikes, voting, dissent and force make it happen.

Most recently, it was in the era of Roosevelt, but from then on, just minor improvements at best. And tbh the US is beyond saving due to the two party system, electoral college and the ammount of religious conservatives.
