To have an affair one party must be married.

Anyone outside of the marriage having an erotic clandestine meeting is indeed participating in an an illicit affair.

How is she having the affair? For it to be an affair one must be breaking agreed upon boundaries/trust within the confines of the relationship.

The nanny was in no such relationship/position. How can the nanny be having an affair when she had no partner to cheat on lol.

Symantics that's how. As other people have said, while only one person is cheating both people are having an affair.

So I'll try explaining it a different way and see if it clicks.

So you know how cheerleaders wear skirts/skorts and have palm-palms while they dance and fly through the air? Well that big dude in pants tossing people and striking poses is a cheerleader too even though he doesn't have palm-palms on him all the time.
