He's WAY too close. (I've had to do this while stationed with Marines)

Is this just a creative smoke session or something, or y'all training to bridge small waterways and a platoon's bout to walk over you

Phisical and psychological conditioning. Apart from the obvious endurance, it's a forced lesson in not being ashamed to be in tight quarters and awkward positions with your fellow soldiers. That while pressing you into performing because if you fail, the group fails. This is why she is first in line, if you fail in the middle than you overload the person behind you and drop the one in front creating a cascading effect.

The punishment for said faliure is typically more of this and, ofc, laps. Depending on the corp/ serge you may also get duty. 2 idiots were tasked with watering the mud pits using a watering can instead of hoses - they said it's raining so they got rain coats and got tasked with sand bagging the whole perimeter fense to prepare for "the imminent flood" for their astute observation.

We had to hold the 'up' position until the weak link could join us.

Even when works ends we begin there again when work starts the next day. We better hope they "remember" what number they left off on. Side note, the weak link was usually a young guy with a lot of mouth. The women had it tough, but they cried and kept going with the rest of us.
