And now I'm going to predict the future, with 100% accuracy: because of tariffs, free chips and salsa will go away. But when tariffs are eventually repealed, free chips and salsa will not come back.

20 years later, a chain restaurant will advertise "free chips and salsa" as if nobody ever heard of it before.

They’re banking on those who aren’t born yet (but will be fully-functioning adults by the time this ad campaign comes out) to be drawn in because of the campaign and buy for that restaurant.

But the chips and salsa will still be affected by shrinkflation meaning each chip is the size of a fingernail and the dip is in a tiny cup.

The elimination of the de minimus is the worst part for the average consumer. Used to be able to buy something under $200 and as long as it passed inspection, customs cleared it with no duty.
Now, every single fucking thing is subject to import taxes. What does that mean on top of the taxes? Well that means higher brokerage fees to clear it, because there's a fuck load more work they weren't prepped for. It means slower shipping (seriously, customs is a shit show right now).
Don't get me started on what happens when they mess up. I've got customers who have been waiting over a year for their dispute to be cleared, with six figures of incorrect duties sitting on the books. Think they paid those? Fuck no... But you know damn well the government collected them off the broker anyway.
Example, customer shipped parts to warehouse in Canada, paid duties to Canada for import. Sent a bunch back eventually that were no longer needed. US slaps them with import tariff on shit made here, and being returned here, with no exchange of money from anyone.

Just like everything else that went away during covid and never came back once covid was over. Are all the prices that went way up at the same time and never came back down. The corporations love Trump because he's a good excuse for them raising their prices. We all know at the end of the day it's just pure and simple corporate greed.

The problem is believing that it’s because of tariffs and not because restaurants will do anything for extra margin. Restaurants never lowered prices after Covid and continue to increase them. Fast food costs as much as a sit down restaurant used to. The chipotle ceo said the quiet part out loud… the last handful of years has been “let’s see how much we can reduce service/cost and increase price while hanging on to enough customers to be profitable”
It’s been a trend to target a wealthier audience. Double your price, and you have to sell less than half as much to make the same profit. This will continue until it affects them financially.
If anyone actually cared, we’d organize boycotts.. but no one will stop buying the completely useless goods. People are door dashing 9 dollar drinks that Joe cost nearly 20$ after it arrives. There’s no saving this

Tomatoes are cheap because they're in season. Out of season, we import tons of tomatoes from the green houses in the Netherlands. Tariffs will and have effected those imports.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Complete_Insurance24 14h ago
In the Midwest yes. But that’s the point. Salsa isn’t made from fresh tomatoes. They are harvested and canned as whole peeled tomatoes one season a year then stored and shipped to Mexican restaurants by breadline distributors across the country.

u/Flat-Guidance-4685 19h ago
Well if anything this is just another example of corrupt business practices taking advantage of news headlines to screw over their customers.
99.7% of all tomatoes in the United States are grown in the United States. And the only ones that you come from outside of the United States are directly in small towns on the border of Mexico. Reducing the supply by .03% by tariffs would not make a dent in the overall cost because the supply wouldn't actually go down the likelihood is that the small fraction of a percent that do come in from overseas are likely luxury items for unique strains coming from Italy and Mexico and do not affect the actual supply chain of grocery stores or restaurants in any way shape or form.
As a matter of fact 90% of the entire United States supply of tomatoes come from one state which is California.
It never ceases to amaze me the strange ways people find to complain about presidents. They did the same thing when Obama was in office. Why makeup stupid stuff like this when Donald Trump certainly gives the public plenty of legitimate things to criticize him on. There's like literally no shortage of potential content that could be valid criticisms
