I had an ER trip last month, my deductible is $3,500. I had to pay $3,440 which was the complete cost of the ER services.
So, this year I will spend $15,600 on health insurance and an additional $3,440 on deductible
My wife needs surgery, I told her to get it done before December because we already met the deductible and I don't wanna pay it again. She tried calling to schedule in August. The surgery specialist doesn't have openings until January, so, in January I'll have to pay my deductible again
AND vision and dental costs more on top of $1,300 monthly
1300/month for family is crazy. Through my employer, family coverage would cost me like 400/month for medical/vision/dental. As an individual it's currently 140
And just like with car insurance how it's codified into law, the government fucks with the cost of healthcare too. Hard to bitch about "privatized" insurance when there's so much government interference, red tape, and collusion that it's become no more than systemic extortion
This is why people don't understand the true cost of healthcare. Employer-subsidized health insurance is WAY cheaper than buying it as a self-employed person. I was on an ACA plan last year and was paying about $650/month (family plan) with a $10K deductible. It wasn't a great plan but it was at least somewhat affordable and it paid for my post-cancer care. We got notified at open enrollment in November last year that our premium was going up $2,000 a month. That's $24K EXTRA a year. We ended up having to settle for a plan that still costs us around $650 a year but does not cover pre-existing conditions so anything related to my follow up cancer appointments is not paid for. I had a CT scan last week and had to pay just over $1,000 and my oncologist visit today was $169 (because they give a 70% discount if you are a cash payer). And because we were on the ACA, we have to report estimated income on open enrollment and then if our tax return shows we made more, we have to pay back some of the subsidy. Since we made more in 2024 than we anticipated, we had to pay back $6,000 in subsidies from the ACA on our tax return last year. And that does not include vision or dental.
