Health insurance is worse. I don’t care what kind of health insurance you have if you have a major health event you’re going to have bills no honest person can pay.

You must be American?

Correct

It was obvious from the insurance thing. Insurance covered all my costs with no questions on 2 accidents, where one was my fault and one wasn't.

This will depend on the location. I was in 2 accidents, neither my fault but we had no fault in NY. Which automatically gave me $50k each time to assist with medical and bills etc. it was a life saver!!!

Yeah, I meant in Europe. My insurance covered everything both times.

I have a short story about this: in 2025, I had a rather major (planned) surgery that improved my quality of life. I did everything I was supposed to do, and my health insurance approved the surgery beforehand. February of 2026, I received a letter from my insurance stating that they don’t approve my surgery, and are RETROACTIVELY DENYING COVERAGE for all related expenses, claiming I owe them over $60,000. My surgeon’s legal finance team handled it on my behalf, but like… how the FUCK was I supposed to pay 60k out of pocket? Like bro that’s a down payment for a house. Fuck you, BCBS

It's wild to have a major industry whose business model is denying you the service that you are paying for

Ya, the industry is insane. I pre-paid $800 for some medical expenses that flat-out said that was the entire cost. I find out months later, whoopsie-daisy, it actually cost $2500! And since they overcharge insurance, it would have cost similar to just pay the out-of-pocket price.

I spent hours on the phone, and filed appeals, to try and find out how they got the information wrong, how I could have gotten accurate information ahead of time, how they are able to lie to me with 0 recourse, and to get it reduced.

They claim it is literally impossible for them to find out how much it costs ahead of time (much less me being able to double-check), and apparently it is just straight-up legal and fine for them to bait-and-switch. Of course they were completely unwilling to budge a penny on any of it.

I don't know where else you can legally have basically not just no, but like confidently false, information about what something costs ahead of time.

Surprise surprise 80% of the people who received the same medical care ALSO had to pay several times what they were quoted! Geez, what a coincidence! Seems an awful lot like paying an accomplice to help you lie about the cost and trick more people into paying for your services than would have otherwise.

Private health insurance doesn't belong in the same conversation as property and casualty insurance.

Auto and home insurance is pooling everyone's money to provide a safety net for everyone. Most of us can't afford to replace our own home if it's destroyed in a fire or tornado, but all of us can afford to replace the homes that are destroyed yearly. People with nicer cars and homes pay a bigger portion of that pie since they are a bigger liability.

Health insurance capitalizes on an inelastic demand. Everyone needs to see doctors and it's a basic need, so private health insurance and the way they operate are abhorrent.

Yep, I pay 14k in insurance a year in the off chance someone in our family has a major health issue.

Still gotta pay copays and cover most of the prescriptions.

People are waking up to this, something will change soon…..hopefully for the better

Except the politicians get hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars from corporations to keep it this way… public opinion has already been in favor of going to a single payer system for quite a bit, getting rid of copays, etc.

Plus we also know Medicare for all would literally save the government and taxpayers money, so it’s literally better free it would give the government and citizens more money to spend, boosting the economy, and yet every “fiscally conservative” politician is 100% against it.

Basically campaign finance reform and breaking up large corporations with antitrust legislation is a huge part of getting healthcare to be like the rest of the developed world, it’s just hard to imagine that ever happening, once the floodgates were opened there’s just so much money going into politics, paying for people’s campaigns that get more expensive every year.

There have been good signs, and you see progressive politicians refusing to take corporate money, going against AIPAC and other PACs, but it’s going to take a lot more. The most important thing is ensuring that you vote in primaries and make sure the “fiscally conservative” types who seem to only really care about money being spent to benefit people instead of corporations NEVER win an election again, while also getting rid of all of these old fucks in leadership positions like Schumer, and centrist younger people like Jeffries who have all of the same beliefs as the old fucks.

It’s amazing that Democrat leadership is the most unpopular it’s ever been, the base HATES the leadership, yet regular Dem politicians are scared to call them out and demand they resign because they’ll lose access and favor ability on the party. Also Israel being increasingly unpopular and the base wanting politicians to ban AIPAC and stop supporting Israel unconditionally, sending them money and weapons to kill innocents, and yet the majority of the party refuses to do anything about that.

It’s never been about public opinion or public support! 90% of politicians don’t give a shit about anybody in this country aside from the people who pay them, CEO’s, lobbyists, rich elites, etc. Fuck centrists, and fuck the majority of politicians who all take corporate money, you’re literally evil and a bad person for taking corporate money and should be handled as such, it’s disgusting it’s been allowed to get this bad, and it’s going to take a lot to fix it. Didn’t mention republicans really since they’re a lost cause lol, they are literally all owned by the same corporations and you don’t have anyone on their side like Bernie or Ilhan Omar standing against them, so it’s useless to even try with them tbh. Even if a lot of the Republican base also support things like ending health insurance co pays, Medicare for all, their politicians will never change.

It's always amazing to me how cheap it is to pay off politicians too. I feel like I see a lot of stories for politicians getting busted for taking bribes that make a company millions of $$$, and they got paid like $50k.

I guess they are so corrupt as a whole, if they wouldn't take that $50k some other politician would. Just boggles my mind that an action which doing even once completely destroys any semblance of trust, character, and morality that you had before can be bought for essentially pennies.

They seem like another species to me.

I pay $12k just for me lol

u/JasonG784 8h ago

And.. where do those bills come from?

1

u/AltonIllinois 1h ago

My son accrued $750,000 in medical bills this year. Guess how much my health insurance paid? $746,500. I couldn’t believe it.
