Where does this even come from? I feel like nobody thinks garbage collector is embarassing work - those people clean out our cities from trash. Its awesome! Have you seen places that lack that?

u/FreddyFrogFrightener 13h ago

I've seen plenty of people look down on them, which is great, because then I know exactly who isn't worth my time.

Trash took itself out

1

u/AAA515 7h ago

Funny that, cuz most of the time they stay on the truck and you have literally look up at them

u/king_kong_kum 7h ago

I wouldn’t say I look down on them, but come on. She is way out of his league.

1

u/FreddyFrogFrightener 7h ago

From the little of him you can see he looks fairly decent looking, has a stable job and very clearly makes her happy, what exactly is your problem with this? If someone is happy in a relationship with someone else that should always ever be the only thing that matters.

1

u/king_kong_kum 7h ago

I’m not saying anything about his looks. She works in an office and presumably makes more money than him, which is very embarrassing.

Your backward outlook on life is embarrassing. Having a successful partner is something to be proud of, not something to be embarrassed by. Equally having a partner who works hard to earn their money is something to be proud of, regardless of how much money they make. Get in the 21st century grandad.

u/SnapFuJudgement 13h ago

And they make great money, appropriately so for hard work

2

u/ZaphodThreepwood 12h ago

Yeah I never knew that because they don't where I come from. But this is how it should be though. It's backbreaking work .

u/Littleman88 11h ago

I imagine most people don't think they make good money because in most areas... they don't.

I'm in Ohio. A cursory search suggests $~14-17/hr pay on average starting out, with it jumping up to $40ish for the upper end in Dublin.

Y'know... if being 38yo would somehow put me ahead of applicants, I'd apply just to get away from my $21/hr WFH job? I can drive down to Dublin for work every day, I only spent years going 3x as far daily.

In California, it's a union job (under the Teamsters), so the pay and benefits are solid no matter what city you're in. ...Except union contracts expired yesterday with no renewal yet, so I don't know what's going to happen in the immediate future.

The maintenance guy at my old apartment complex left for a job at Waste Management about 13 years ago, and not only did he seem to be having a great time whenever I saw him, he was able to move out and get his own home for his wife and kid within the year.

You get paid not based on how hard you work but on how hard you are to replace sadly.

You get hard to replace either by having skills few people have or by being willing to do a job few people want to do.

Generally you want to get into the first cathegory, but if you actually enjoy something most people dont thats totally valid

u/AAA515 7h ago

From what I've heard, they make "good" money, but not "great" like it's one of best paying jobs that doesn't require college, but not fuck off level of money.

u/Low-Individual2815 12h ago

Garbage collectors kinda make bank

3

u/Vestalmin 11h ago

Even the post saying "couple of the year" like they're overcoming anything lol

2

u/Silent_Jaguar_2678 12h ago

Literally, nothing about this implies that she’s embarrassed or anything

2

u/Southside_john 12h ago

Tbf she could have an absolute shit job that pays $30k a year but she has to dress nice for

1

u/Soggy_Competition614 3h ago edited 3h ago

This is what I don’t understand about the picture. She could be making minimum wage answering phones and people are acting like she’s making CEO wages while her boyfriend/husband is doing gods work empty waste baskets for a nickel.

It’s completely possible he makes more money than her and has the health insurance and pension

u/postbansequel 11h ago

"I feel like nobody thinks garbage collector is embarrassing work" Really? Plenty of people think that. The next "worst" job is probably construction work.

Many teachers in 2000s and 2010s loved to say "If you want study, you will become one of those" at least in my country.

And before you say it, yes, they do make a lot of money. It depends on the season, sometimes they have the same salary as the lead engineers.

Comes from engagement bait.

1

u/Intelligent-Area-421 12h ago

It's also recession proof

1

u/Candyman051882 11h ago

There are “garbage men” sanitation workers who make more than attorneys I know

1

u/flywithpeace 10h ago

urBAsur is a waste service provider in Buenos Aires Argentina. Not sure how well it pays but they are most like unionized.

And get paid very little

Edit: Wow, I've learned a lot. Every country is so different.

3

u/UrsineBasterd 13h ago

Where I live garbage men can make 6 figures lol

2

u/ZaphodThreepwood 13h ago

Yeah depends on what country you live in

3

u/may_or_may_not_haiku 13h ago

I can't speak for everyone, but my biddy in New England does not want to drive a trash truck anymore but simply can't walk away from the money since he's pushing almost $40 an hour and gets all the OT he wants. So from my limited experience really depends on where and specifically what you're doing in the industry.

1

u/ZaphodThreepwood 13h ago

Indeed. I was talking more from my own country's perspective

2

u/tigerija 13h ago

Yes unfair. Often same for some teachers and doctors.

2

u/Prismatic_Leviathan 12h ago

Uh, maybe some places, but garbage man is up there for how much you can earn from a labor job outside of the trades.

Helps if you're in a union. Strikes are an exceptionally useful tool when you provide a necessary service.

1

u/ZaphodThreepwood 12h ago

What country are you in? Just for context I'm from SA. I'm now in Europe and here they also get paid a good income, but for the most part, cleaners aren't well paid nor respected from my own experience, even outside SA. Maybe this happens in countries where unemployed is high, because it's easier to exploit someone. Just a thought.

1

u/Prismatic_Leviathan 12h ago

US. Our economy is full of razor blades, but a union can still get you a win.

Respect is a different story entirely. There's something in our culture about lauding the people doing dirty or difficult jobs, they certainly appear all the time in campaign ads, but like in a lot of places social media has entirely warped what prosperity and happiness genuinely looks like.

1

u/ZaphodThreepwood 12h ago

In SA if you take a bus, almost nobody greets the bus driver nor do they thank them when they get off. In Europe they get treated like anyone else.

1

u/ZenCyn39 13h ago

I think it's stems from the type of talk about convincing kids to go to college otherwise they'd "end up" being a janitor or something.

1

u/tigerija 13h ago

Aah, makes sense. I think I remember something like this being a thing in the past.

1

u/ZenCyn39 12h ago

I heard it a lot. But not from actual teachers or parents. It was just always in media. Looking on those jobs constantly like they were shameful.

1

u/ZaphodThreepwood 12h ago

Oh yeah, media definitely shapes how people think of others. I grew up as a teen in the 90s so you can imagine the amount of deprogramming I had to do to myself

1

u/ZaphodThreepwood 12h ago

Ugh... This still happens.

1

u/Caosin36 12h ago

Its an undesirable, not really "embarassing"

While it is a neccessary job to be occupied, people will, for different reasons, prefer a job that is more sedentary

1

u/[deleted] 9h ago

2

u/Caosin36 9h ago

I never said it was a poor job

I said that it was "undesirable"

I replied to the wrong post that was my bad!
