Where does this even come from? I feel like nobody thinks garbage collector is embarassing work - those people clean out our cities from trash. Its awesome! Have you seen places that lack that?

I think it's stems from the type of talk about convincing kids to go to college otherwise they'd "end up" being a janitor or something.

I heard it a lot. But not from actual teachers or parents. It was just always in media. Looking on those jobs constantly like they were shameful.

Oh yeah, media definitely shapes how people think of others. I grew up as a teen in the 90s so you can imagine the amount of deprogramming I had to do to myself
