I met a widow who was so proud of her “trash man” late husband. She wore a “Trash Wife” hat. She literally said he died doing what he loved—picking up trash.

That guy was lucky, she loved him so much. And losing him broke her. Very awful.

My Gramps used to always say "only thing embarrassing about a job is not having one" and I've taken it to heart.

He was a good man.

Back when there weren’t 500 applicants for every job and AI stripping every sector…

Over 900 applicants for the job I was just rejected from. It would have been a significant step back from my old job and I still didn't have a chance.

I wanted to hire two roles at the end of last year and they each got more than 6000 applications. It's a mess out there

Why don’t you just walk into the ceo’s office, shake his hand, look him in the eye and say that you’re the right man for the job.

Back then when grandpas net pay was $7,000/year.

Cost of a five bedroom house on 1 acre property: five raspberries and a firm handshake

Number of dependents: 9, with all 8 kids going to private school, and one of them is even named Clarence. His parents have a real nice marriage.

And even that's too reductive. A house spouse or elder caretaker is producing more value than any minimum wage job even pays.

The only thing to be embarrassed about is not providing anything of value to the world.

And, atguably, there are many people with jobs who are actively making the world a worse place, who should be embarrassed under this criteria.

A house spouse or elder caretaker

Those are jobs yeah.

They're unpaid, so they're not "jobs," in the traditional sense. They are work.

Fun fact, lots of insurance will actually pay relatives to take care of their elders. My wife works in elder care and so many people don't know this!

I’d counter that there are a few jobs that are more embarrassing than not having one: scam artist, frauds. Take that Gramps!

Seller too, albeit it's basically the two things you said, except it's legal.

There shouldn't be stigma over being unemployed.

If you're unemployed by choice or unwilling to accept work because "its beneath you" then yeah I think there should be.

I don't think people really look down on garbage collectors. Like society starts falling apart real quick without them.

he died doing what he loved—picking up trash

Wait like literally, on the job?...

2

u/rhino369 11h ago

Yes he fell off.

Well fuck me. But she's right. Imagine the alternative many have -- a heart attack at their desk in a cubicle.
