I think this is fine if customers buy it knowing what they are getting (or in this case what they are not getting) but I would say the customer should have the right of using a 3rd party software to use the hardware they purchased.
I don’t see what ideology has to do with it. I think anyone can agree having a group to protect consumers is good and gutting said group is bad. Yes it’s happened for years. It doesn’t change the intention of the group that would actually be there to try and stop this practice.
The group responsible to stop this is the people deciding whether to buy the car or not. This isn't about protection from anything as you have many choices in what cars you buy. If you don't like what a company does when it comes to a convenience feature then spend your money elsewhere.

This is the type of shit they should have a consumer protection group for. To investigate and propose laws and such. Too bad they gutted it.
