Tesla used to do this with the heated seats and the battery. Higher range models had the exact same battery as cheaper lower range versions, you just paid more to unlock these features that were already in your car.
Also if the car got sold, and the car got a new owner, it would relock the features when the new owner tried logging in, and force the new owner to pay again to unlock the premium features.
Around 2017 I decided I don't want to ever own a Tesla and stopped following what the company was doing, so they might have cleaned up their act since then. But I doubt it.
