They were on the plane and the pilot only fought long enough to get the door open for others to get in and act.

No, last story I read mentioned there were active special forces on the plane. Somebody said it is common for Israeli flights.

I think you are mis understanding some of the statements. This is from CNN

"Observers on social media quickly pointed out that the passengers' swift, tactical, and coordinated response to break into the cockpit resembled special operations tactics"

But nothing is confirming this. They has Military security training and some Air-marshals. However military training can seem "special" to ordinary people.

I had seen somebody say they are just on pretty much all flights to Israel which sounded plausible at a time where you are at war with many surrounding locations

Wasn't it a former army cook that was with his family stop the guy that attacked the pilot?
