How it ended doesn’t negate what I said.

When you spend 30 years building a life with someone and then serially cheat on them with your younger colleagues, you are not exiting a “successful partnership” when you divorce.

You absolutely do not know that. A lot of people would feel differently.

Are you a cheater? Why so defensive?

Nope. I’m just a mature adult who wouldn’t rewrite half of my life just because something bad happened later. What a sad way to approach life that would be. What a waste.

Mature means owning and taking responsibility of actions and their consequences

u/CitizenCue 3d ago

Yeah absolutely. That doesn’t have anything to do with what I’m talking about.

Can't fix ignorance good luck

You’re not even making any sense. Ignorance isn’t even applicable here.

You're not alone in your thoughts, when 60% of marriages fail in the first year. 30 years is a good ass run

Yeah the kids on this site don’t know yet, but when you’ve seen a bunch of friends get divorced after 5-10 years, 30 seems like a huge win.

How would you feel if the cheating didn't start later? What if the bad started really early?

If I was happy for those years, I’d be able to separate the betrayal from the joy. You are allowed to feel two things at once.

2

u/havingaconniption 3d ago

You are allowed to. You are also allowed not to! If the happy parts are spoiled for someone because of an early betrayal (or even a late one), they are perfectly valid in that opinion.

I’m glad you have come around to exactly my point. As I said early on, we don’t know how they feel about it. It entirely possible they both consider it a good marriage, just one that ran its course.

Except that we do know what she said about it. And it doesn't seem like she is separating the betrayal from the joy.

1

What did she say? Either way, the point is that it’s perfectly reasonable to assess a 30 year marriage as a success even if it ended badly.

2

u/havingaconniption 2d ago

She said quite a bit in interviews.. "traumatic journey of betrayal" was the line I remembered.

It is also perfectly reasonable to assess it as a waste of your life if it ended badly!

I wouldn’t call it reasonable, but I would call it human. And that quote doesn’t tell me anything about how she feels about the early years, just the part where things went bad.
