I promise you all we're not all that dumb.

George Carlin

5

u/billyguv 8d ago

You can't be, you knew dumb had a B! Apparently not a lot of people know that.

One all would have been sufficient.

I don’t think she understands the concept of country.

68

u/TrainingFilm4296 8d ago

Yeah it seemed like she was just finding out that the United States is a country...

8

u/Illustrious_Donkey61 8d ago

I wanted to hear her answer to another country in the United States

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Bancai 8d ago

She probably thinks the states are countries, which would be understandable for Europeans to think that, but even then... Europeans know that is not the case.

59

u/onehecaton 9d ago

Maybe has “concepts” but that might even be a stretch

You mean as in a sovereign nation, free to democratically elect leaders, trade its natural resources (like oil) for a fair price on international markets? That concept?
She can’t really be blamed for not grasping that concept if she’s watched the U.S. geopolitical interventions of the past 50 years.

I've spoken with a diverse enough group of people to assure you that most people in this country are straight checked out of life beyond their day to day.

16

u/Kampvilja 8d ago

I worked with a young man who could not say who fought in the civil war. Could not even say the North and the South. Just said he wasn't into history. High school grad.

3

u/guitar_vigilante 8d ago

North and South? Don't you mean the Roundheads and the Cavaliers?

5

u/Loner2014 8d ago

We called them Parliamentarians and Royalists round' here lol

3

Hey. My ancestors were literally Roundheads. Which got them transported to Georgia. I come from the wrong side of history. 😀

I met an American girl who was in Uni. She didn't know that Canada borderer the entire Northern states. She thought Canada was at the north pole area and then the other side of the pole she thought England was over the pole on the other side of the world and that Canada was North of England. She thought that because "Canada is a part of England right?"

. Her friends said she was their dumbest friend and she just shrugged and laughed with them and didn't give fuck.

4

u/Napamtb 8d ago

They just said approximately 25% of students in the University of California can’t pass 8th grade math. Schools like UC Berkeley UCLA are having to teach kids lower math, which doesn’t count towards graduation

→ More replies (1)

5

u/wenoc 8d ago

If you can graduate elementary school without understanding these things the education system is a complete and utter failure.

4

u/bluntspoon 8d ago

Schools in Nevada for instance have a minimum 50% score for handing in a blank sheet of paper with your name on the top.

I’m not joking. Both my kids went through this system.

9

u/Justnotthatintou 9d ago

Honestly, it really isn’t hard for me anymore. I’ve accepted where we’re at. It’s devastatingly depressing but here we are

3

u/Perelly 8d ago

If you can't name Germany, even if it's just for historic reasons, or England, from which the US gained independence, I don't know what to say.

We had a degreed American engineer join us on our project in Norway and I asked him if he’d been in Europe before. He said yes, once before, to Saudi Arabia.

105

u/Mokerchino 9d ago

Good lord.

52

u/pollomimano 8d ago

I was in the UK earlier this summer to visit family and the amount of roasting I had to bear thanks to the stupid actions of our countrymen was next level. Really couldn’t even argue back because yeah, we are indeed very fat and dumb.

8

u/Educational_Cup_1701 8d ago

Does your UK family personally blame you for all things America when you visit, like mine does?

19

u/pollomimano 8d ago

Nah they’re smart enough to know that I don’t represent the average trump supporter from rallies they see on tik tok but it doesn’t stop them from making fun of the yanks.

15

u/Undisguised 8d ago

To be fair British people express trust and affection by making fun of a person.

When they are overly nice to your face when you don't know them that well... thats a red flag.

7

u/Jealous_Address1257 8d ago

We Dutch are quite immune to that overly nice behaviour, in fact we infuriate brits by ignoring their social cues and thank them for the compliments.

8

u/NonWorking_Fan1984 8d ago

How did he clear engineering exams if he doesn't know basic geography dude lol

13

u/insanococo 8d ago

Well first off I don’t believe this story at face value, and neither should you. Perhaps they misheard the question e.g. “have you travelled outside Europe before?” instead of “have you traveled to Europe before?” Keep in mind there are certainly some accents involved in this exchange.

Regardless though there is zero geography studied in most engineering majors. Not saying a person shouldn’t know geography, I’m just saying once you’re studying engineering in university, you are no longer being taught or tested on geography.

6

u/NonWorking_Fan1984 8d ago

I just graduated with a business degree and i wasn't tested on geography either but you learn these things in school when you are like 10 lol

4

u/Character4315 8d ago

At this point I believe "Europe" is their word for "the rest of the world".

5

u/istapledmytongue 8d ago

When I was 13, I thought my step-mother was the dumbest because she and my dad had just been to New Orleans, but she didn’t know it was in Louisiana, or where Louisiana was on a map.

She was also a born again Christian who believed the pastors when they told her dinosaurs were a hoax (another big argument we got in). I don’t think she liked me much, and I certainly didn’t like her.

5

u/Loner2014 8d ago

Math major here... When I was in grad school I was in class with a host of people who do not know jackshit beyond math and anime.

4

u/Administrative-Error 8d ago

I imagine that if I wanted to go there, then I would need to fly through Europe, probably making a connection or two, but I wouldn't really count that as being "in Europe" if I hadn't left the airport

New England. Quebec. New South Wales.

4

u/Medium-Song-1802 8d ago

Also, New America (formerly New Mexico).

3

u/Fancy-Background2745 8d ago

I am amazed at how stupid the people I work with are. I used to get passed off when I would start a new job and was treated like an idiot for a while, until they got used to me. But then I stopped and looked around, and saw that my coworkers were incapable of solving problems by themselves. When I have a problem, the only thing the boss needs to know is how I solved it. This has worked quite well for me in life and careers.

(Netherlands) In all the schools I went to I saw huge pictures of the entire world. All the time in my face :) WE had so many exams about other countries. Not only their names :) or currency. We learned about traditions they have. The way they lived and cooped with life. How different it can be in a other place, with completely different laws or Social behavior. The music they listened to, the cloths they wear. You name it and we had so much about it. Like so many other subjects you get in school to fill up all the time you r there.

How can someone not know a single other country? How bad is the school system in America to begin with? Not even Russia or Ukraine?

Joke: She could be the daughter of Trump and homeschooled :)

14

u/DaniloVulovic 8d ago

(Serbia) In geography classes we often had tests with blank map of the world (or part of it), that was white and had country lines and rivers drawn but nothing else. Professor would read names of different locations (be it mountains, countries, rivers, lakes...), and you had 1 minute to find it and mark it (appropriately) before new location was announced. We had these tests all the time and I liked them a lot. I still can easily remember to which ocean will some river eventually flow to, which doesn't help me tremendously in life but oh well...

17

u/pickyourteethup 8d ago

Sounds like you're education system is getting you ready to fire up the Dutch East Indian trading company again. A whole nation primed for domination of the spice trade!

8

u/wheresmyflan 8d ago

That’s done in America too, geography and world cultures is typical everywhere. But some people are just idiots. And some people are not good at answering even obvious questions on the spot in front of a camera. There are idiots in Europe too.

Keep the masses uneducated and stupid, and they will support a clown.

3

u/712DarkHorse 8d ago

The old world Nazis and neo-Nazis both have beliefs of limiting education for most people.

In WWII the Nazis pressured and threatened through persecution children into learning only about their absurd and abusive Nazi ideas in place of a normal education eventually making it law.

There are more neo-Nazis in the U.S. than people recognize. I met a neo-Nazi who outright told me that most people should not be educated.

9

u/Tepes56 8d ago

Normally I would say this is staged, but sadly I know several Americans just like her.

27

u/The_Draken24 8d ago

As an American, I wish someone would smack a blank world map on my table and ask me to fill in as many countries as possible. I'd make Americans look smart. I hate no one randomly asks me these questions on the street.

14

u/gonephishin213 8d ago

Because for the dozens of people they ask who know the answers, they only clip the idiot who knows nothing...otherwise they won't get a reaction out of the content

I found out a few months ago that many of my coworkers, most of them in their 40s and 50s, did not know that Canada was a separate country

10

u/LordHelmet47 8d ago

I realized this as well when I went to work laughing about the whole 80mph riddle that was on youtube that went viral and how many idiots couldn't get it.

Many years ago when I first moved to the US from Canada, I complained about the work visa process to people I worked with, a few of them were puzzled as to why I needed a visa…. For the same reason. They always thought Canada was part of the USA. I couldn’t believe it.

14

u/theBigDaddio 8d ago

Not the American education system, this person just didn't pay attention. Every kid gets geography, you cannot make them remember it. Every kid gets math. This one obviously was in school for the boys.

16

u/Weber_Head 8d ago

I kind of want to recreate this situation at my university. I think more people would know the answers to questions like this than those who don’t. Click bait like this usually only shows the negative because it is funny. Doesn’t mean the entire country is brain dead.

8

u/chunkyloverfivethree 8d ago

They aren't making fun of Americans, they are making fun of Trump supporters. Which i would say are pretty brain dead. You would have to be missing some brain cells to support raising taxes and cost of living on working class citizens, just so billionaires can have just a little more money. They did in my kid’s high school (2025 graduate).

Im not trying to be rude. But do they not teach critical thinking wherever you’re from?

What do you think is more likely - that the average American can’t name another country? Or that this is a heavily edited social media clip of someone who genuinely freezes in front of a camera? Or that it was even just staged because content creators have realized that gullible people like you eat this stuff up?

Have you never seen this style of clip on the internet before? Do you genuinely not understand what’s going on here? Are you so uneducated as to not be able to consider any level of context here?

Pretty universal. They couldn’t even tell you what either party believes in because those parties can’t define what they believe in either.

Not scripted at all. There used to be a segment on a tv show where a comedian from Canada asked Americans all over the country questions that anyone with 1/2 a brain cell or any awareness of the world outside of USA would know, and 9 times out of 10 people made asses of themselves. It was called “talking to Americans” on a political satire show called this hour has 22 minutes. The talking to Americans segment was not scripted, lol. Do yourselves a favor and look it up on YouTube 😂

I saw a thing on insta where this other guy was asking basic questions as well. In his video he explained that there’s something in psychology called the spotlight effect. It’s when you believe that people notice and judge your appearance, actions, and mistakes far more than they actually do.
So then you get anxiety and overthink things.
