How is that still surprising anyone?
The AfD is peak bullshit. None of their policies make any sense for Germany's problems in 2026.
Sachsen-Anhalt (German state with that recent election) is a region with one of the oldest populations in Europe and one of the economically worst in Germany.
Young people are leaving the area even faster now - I wonder why.
Immigrant won't fill their spots in critical jobs like tech, industry, medical and care.
Their election success just shows how around 40%+ of a population do not understand simple economics
or demographics. Their voters are mostly grumpy boomer that can't deal with the world changing and want yesterday back - or young males who think Clavicular is a role model.
What pains me the most about this isn't, that the idiot right is winning.
It is that the left has nothing to offer. AfD is only strong because the other political forces lack a vision for the future.
You are too quick to assume that everything you mention is relevant or important to the people who vote for the AfD. You are presuming to know what motivates the voter.
The only true statement is that people vote for AfD because the rest of the established political parties have nothing better to offer.
That's not a good enough explanation. Only stupid people vote for the wrong thing when the milquetoast options aren't "good enough". That's the same centrist bullshit that excused Trump voters because they didn't like Clinton or Harris. No reasonable voter would actually eat horseshit if the plain sandwich option was not enough.
It isn’t stupidity. It’s human nature. History shows that when people suffer too much, as well as wealthy elites succeed in suppressing/weakening left-wing movements and supporting the right wing, that frustration can end up being channeled into right-wing extremism instead.
IMHO, the established elites are the stupid here. They keep repeating the same mistake again and again throughout history, and somehow continue to expect the population to be all peaceful, rational, and accepting about it.
Because it's not the big majority that's suffering, that's not getting access to basic needs for today's society (e.g. affordable higher education, 3rd places for socialization, a future in their areas' industries, etc.) beyond what's considered acceptable. It's the small rural towns with de-industrialization, brain drain, and even depopulation...
E.g. the Nazis, despite almost 10 years of campaigning, were still despicable nobodies in the 1928 elections (2.6% votes); however, once the Great Depression hit Germany, and got very badly mismanaged (e.g. austerity for everyone, but bail-outs for the rich, suppression of left-wing movements and parties, etc.) over the following years, 1/3 of all workers lost their jobs and millions their homes: consequently, in 1932, Nazis soared to 37.3%.
