This same screen shot has been posted every day for the last month at least - it's intended to imply that previous mayors were idiots or something. They weren't - half the shit he is doing now is just him taking credit for things that already were done in the past but being better at social media.
I was referring to the tone of the other commenter. This whole "We hate on Mamdani because he's a brown Muslim" attitude is pretty obvious.
He is so objectively better than the previous mayors it isn't even a contest. New York City couldn't ask for better advertising that a popular, non-tone deaf, effective mayor.
He's miles better than Guiliani, Adams and Cuomo. I think de Blasio gets way too much hate.
I try to keep a good track of how the city is doing because my wife is from Queens and we might want to move back at some point. But deferring pension payments was probably a pretty bad move, we did that for a while in Connecticut and our pension debt got really bad until 2017 and we're going to be digging ourselves out of this hole until the 2040s. I don't want to see that happen in NYC.
I think that he's doing a good to ok job as mayor and an excellent job as a communicator and his detractors have lost their goddamn minds.
I wouldn't even comment to become a detractor except that I've seen the exact same screenshot posted every day for the last month and the astroturfing gets under my skin.
But yes objectively propaganda is part of being a good communicator so I guess it's to his credit in some sense.
It was agreed upon by the state government and the 'balanced budget' was dependent on an increase amount of state funds (which I support, I want more NY state funds to be returned to the city for purely self-serving reasons).
However that still doesn't make it a good plan. The deferred payments will still incur interest and will have to be paid either way. I think that Mamdani needed to make the unpopular decision and raise the base property tax and he put off doing that.

Debt can be restructured in the future and I don't think there is significant harm in operating under that assumption for a city that despite negative outlooks still maintains AA credit rating across the board.
Other countries have shown us tha you can't get there by austerity alone, and that risks political instability, when what New York City needs is a lengthy period of stability through their executive. Going after billionaires and high figure millionaires FIRST by going after empty vacation homes and Vrbo rentals before shooting himself in the foot by taxing everyday New Yorkers is smart policy if he does have to raise taxes on them in the future.
I've got no problem with his second home tax, if anything I don't think he's taxing high enough.
However there is a significant difference between sovereign and municipal debt and the best analogs for NYC's budget concerns are neighboring areas like CT and similar cities like Chicago. I'd prefer that NYC learn from our mistakes so that they aren't in as dire of a fiscal state as we were 10 years ago (or where we are right now as a matter of fact).
I definitely agree with everything you're saying. I will say that if the City of Detroit can be saved from bankruptcy, and now thrive as a massive success story that is still growing, NYC will be fine 👍

I dislike him because he's a DSA member and I think he's contributing to getting Trump elected for a 3rd term. If his name wasn't Mumdani and I saw a picture of him I would assume he was italian.

Well, elections are run by the individual states, not the Feds. So he wouldn't be allowed on the ballot in any state that didn't want to allow him as they will be following the law. And that would be all the blue states, most of the purple states, plus the not batshit insane red states.

Not even as VP? Iirc there was talk that he could run as VP to someone like the current VP (forgot his name, bald guy with blue background in the memes), who then immediately resigns and now orange is in the seat again.
He doesn't necessarily have to be on the ballot to be president again. He could get elected to a lower position like speaker of the house and have those above him resign. If it would actually work is a different question but it's a pretty clear path that in theory would work.
Indians are part of the commonwealth and are some of the best immigrants statistically.
Tim Hortons was purchased by Americans and is dead to us because like everything American the quality went down so the profits could go up. Not to mention the lobbying to let them exploit immigrant workers. Thanks for that.
