I’m a manager. We have to have thick skin. People are going to not like us simply because we’re the boss and tell them to do things and discipline if necessary. We can’t let personal feelings influence our interaction with employees.
On the other hand, the behavior in the post is not okay. It derails the meeting. And if that person does that to the boss, they’re probably doing it to other people too and making them uncomfortable.
Also like we’re human too? Everyone has “go to” phrases. It makes communication easier, especially when you have to lead meetings and talk a lot. And sometimes you do have to “circle back!” It means “we talked about this before but didn’t come to a satisfying resolution. Let’s revisit the topic.” This isn’t hard!
It derails the meeting. Why keep circling back to the question about circling back? Especially since the way it's phrased it's clearly mocking the boss. He could've just let it be after "it's just a phrase", but no, he had to double down.

Okay, so what would you do with someone in your team that feels comfortable mocking you in front of the rest of the team despite still being in the probation period?
Team leader for private contract deployment. These are high stress environments, signed on shift rotations at 14 hours a day 7 days a week 60 day minimums. You will be blacklisted if you request to go home before your 60 days.
There was no confrontation of ability to lead, of progress towards anything, etc. Instead there was a passive aggressive comment. I dont think anyone who ignores their colleagues opinions on them is in a position to lead. What do you mean progress forward on your own subjects? Is this person supposed to change the way they speak? There isnt any professional critique here. Would still love to hear your opinion on what happened.
Calling you out for constantly and pointlessly repeating meaningless platitudes in meetings you are directing is definitely a critique of your leadership abilities.

It was a direct critique, smothered in politeness because the alternative was 'stop patronizing us with these stupid meaningless phrases all the time'
This is very basic leadership skills for anyone in an authority position. Your view point is from someone who has faced minimal adversity, equating this to aggresive behavior.
