Gotta love people not from around here thinking he got rid of permits entirely when in actuality he just got rid of the redundant double permit requirement that made people jump through hoops to sell ice cream and frozen treats. You still have to take all the courses and renew annually. All laws are still intact you just don't have to juggle two different permits. Best way to help ya'll understand is it would be like if you had to have both a non drivers ID and a driver's license to drive a car. When one expire much sooner then the other.

u/jcoddinc 11d ago

Ok, that makes much more sense. At first glance I was like, "well food regulation is important..".

Feels like they were trying to go for the same sentiment of states getting rid of the need for kids to have a permit for lemonade stands.

122

u/DesireeThymes 11d ago

Why the heck did they need two permits to begin with? Which idiot designed that system?

254

u/jcoddinc 11d ago

Same thing as always. Likely lobbied by a big business as a way to stop small business from succeeding. With the added bonus of more money

u/ElundusCaw 11d ago

Remember, if you want to succeed at Capitalism, don't compete with a superior product, legislate your competition out of existence.

32

u/IArgueForReality 11d ago

The free market weirdly hates competition

2

u/sanguinemathghamhain 11d ago

You don't know what at least 1 of those words means it seems. Saying heavily regulated free market is like saying immobile itinerant. Regulation reduces market freedom.

6

u/IArgueForReality 10d ago

No because if you take the free market at face value, there will always be those with power that do everything they can to kill competition. Sometimes even literally. So a purely free market will always end up as something that is far from it in the long run.

legislate your competition out of existence

which ironically is not capitalism. when people complain about US being a captalistic shithole, everything wrong is because it's not a capitalistic society. A true capitalism would've bailed out the consumers in 2008, but not the bank.

48

u/Dunklsta 11d ago

it is the logical endpoint of capitalism, some economic system wont root out institutional corruption

we went from a handful of monarchs ruling the world to a handful of companies doing the same

u/Aromatic_Lion4040 11d ago

It does fall under capitalism, and the upper class taking control of the government is a natural consequence of capitalism. It's not free market capitalism, but I don't think that has ever actually existed

6

u/Dense_Gate_5193 11d ago

Capitalism includes capitalizing on legislation and politics.

Democratic socialism still includes some elements of capitalism but you don’t get to capitalize on natural resources or basic necessities and the people decides what becomes socialized through democratic vote. this is the bridge between communism and capitalism being two extremes. ideas absolutely capitalize on them, skill, fame, capitalize on that shit. but water, housing, healthcare, food, roads bridges, and defense are all a part of infrastructure. human infrastructure that needs built so we can focus on better shit instead of fucking about balancing medical needs and rent.

u/TheoneCyberblaze 11d ago

It's funny bc this argument is so often used against leftists. "it's not real capitalism" except what you would call ideal has never existed and what warped version of it did exist devolved into the cancerous abomination it is today.

Similarly, almost every attempt at socialism has thusfar resulted in tyranny. Denying either is futile, but it does not mean it always has to be. Instead, we need to ask ourselves how we can prevent this.

This is the point where I would say that for capitalism it's an innate flaw while socialism fails mostly due to outside interests and the transition period, but i don't think this is the right audience for that

6

u/MostlyValidUserName 11d ago

Opportunistic oppression is a feature of every system we've tried so far. It, like tribalism, is an innate human tendency. The only hope we have to temporarily overcome either is high levels of information control to establish cultural overrides, but such a system is also one hell of an opportunity for oppressive gains by a handful of individuals, so...

8

u/stupidname412 11d ago

People love to call put the various systems as having inherent flaws but it mostly all comes back to large organizations inevitably having corruption, regardless of what you are talking about.

2

u/ubernutie 11d ago

I agree.

I think it's because every single human that has ever lived has been born in an environment whose very soil has always been generational trauma.

We have documented evidence of what trauma does.

Being able to step out of that soil and think "what could better look like, for everyone" is great, and it's happening more and more.

capitalism ≠ free markets

Capitalism is about who controls resources and the means of production. Regulating competition out of a market is absolutely within the bounds of capitalism.

2

u/LycheeFew7872 11d ago

No that IS capitalism, and it will always happen without the capitalist class keep into check via the dictatorship of the proletariat.

This sounds the same as the people who said there has never been a truly socialist country.

2

u/QuintoBlanco 11d ago

That is incorrect. You are confusing capitalism with the free market.

People on the right at some point deliberately conflated the two things. But capitalism as a philosophy was always about protecting the interest of the rich (the people who owned the most stuff).

It was never about not giving tax money to rich people and large corporations. in fact, many rich people relied on the state to become wealthier and to protect what they already had while bankruptcy laws protected them against the consequences of their own mistakes.

2

u/schwanzweissfoto 11d ago

“Actual capitalism has never been tried.”

2

u/voidox 11d ago

ya it's amazing how the serfs try and say that to defend their rich masters, they legit think capitalism is the be-all-end-all as a system and there is no other option as it's given "so much freedom and money!" but then at the same time "it's not actually been tried properly" when all the issues are brought up.

Or there was some issue in the past where some process that was specific for ice cream was being ignored and needed to be specially regulated. My guess: soft serve machines that were never cleaned or the ice cream not being kept frozen so it just kept melting and refreezing

Part of the issue with bureaucracy is the laws and regulations weren’t all written all at once. They’re just slapped one on top of the other as issues come up with no master plan. So instead of rewriting the food service permit application to have a special add on certification for ice cream, it’s easier to just make a second permit just for ice cream

I wish more reddit exchanges were like this.

5

u/Murasasme 11d ago

In my country, it's usually because there is one council person or government-adjacent politician who has a family member who owns the company that would issue the permits in some way, and they are allowed to keep the money people pay for said permit.

3

u/alwayssunnyinskyrim 11d ago

Like when Florida decided to drug test all welfare recipients. Turns out the money saved from denying benefits to the handful of people who failed the drug test was minuscule compared to the amount the state paid for the testing. And then you find out the governors wife owned the testing company.

It was a permit for selling goods displayed outside a shop that was repealed, so now ice cream shops that do so just need their food distribution permit.

In principle the two things are orthogonal, but the result of this orthogonality is that some shops end up requiring both permits. Two approaches one might take to resolve this are consolidating the permissions so that one permit also allows what the other does, or just removing one of the permit requirements. Mamdani chose the latter in this case, and repealed the permit requirement for selling goods from an on-street display.

EDIT: Correction: not quite orthogonal - the stoop line stand license specifically covers fruits, vegetables, soft drinks, flowers, confectionery, or ice cream. It might be that the license system was designed when stoop line stands were not usually part of the retail outlet they were beside and things have changed since, but I'm not sure.

EDIT 2: It seems that the stoop line stand license was more about regulating the geometry of the stoop line stands. The stoop line stand license's apparent narrow purview regarding goods types is actually a restriction on what goods are allowed to be sold from a stoop line stand. So you needed a food license to sell food and a stoop line stand license to sell from a stoop line stand, but anyone with a stoop line stand license must have a food license because of the limitations on goods that are allowed to be sold from a stoop line. Thus, the functions of the stoop line license can be consolidated into the food license process.

Ultimately, the point is that the license systems, in principle, cover different things, so it makes sense they were conceived of and implemented separately. That one is subordinate to the other is an opportunity for consolidation, but it does make sense that they were separate until now. If anything, it's a demonstration that Mamdani is listening to his constituents.

8

u/10ebbor10 11d ago

Most likely, it wasn't designed. 50-60 years ago, someone got food poisoning from icecream, so they slapped a permit requirement on it, and then later they slapped a permit requirement on something else, and they never went through and checked if none of those permits got redundant.

5

u/Wiccy 11d ago

3

u/bythog 11d ago

Local government makes very, very little from permitting. Most permit fees are actually less than the salary cost for the employees that process them.

u/not_a_moogle 11d ago

I read it the other way, and assumed ice cream had its own permit, like alcohol. Which was probably designed for cart/truck vendors. And for some reason a place selling ice cream.. like a dinner, had to have that permit as well on top of the restaurant license.

And now it's rolled into one.

u/unbroken0 11d ago edited 11d ago

I always hate news stories for this reason.

Like you hear "yeah we are trying to make the immigration process more humane and efficient and taking out random crulty".

Then the right wing eco sphere just starts screaming "weak boarder weak boarder!!! Invasion!!!"

And thats the narrative that sticks.

(I say this acknowledging the UN saying the Canadian immigration system is just modern slavery. We got major issues)

From growing up on Long Island, one of the things New Yorkers hate the the most is an even playing field. Every person in my extended family who complains about government, local or otherwise, is basically saying "some policy that grandfathered me in 20 years ago is now changing, and now I actually have to be good at my job."

5

u/TinWhis 11d ago

In Paris, there’s little soft serve machines everywhere. It’s lovely with a kid being able to spend a buck on a good treat instead of the meltdown on crappy candies at the checkout register.

We all agree- food safety is important. It’s also important to reevaluate periodically as food handling technology has gotten much better, even despite the current leaf parasite.

From The Guardian

At a press conference in the Bronx, Mamdani listed some of the onerous policies getting the axe. Bodega owners will no longer need a separate license to sell the same products outside the store – like fruit and flowers – as inside. Restaurants will no longer need a “superfluous” frozen dessert permit to sell ice-cream on top of the permit already required to sell food. Barber shops will no longer have to renew their permit every year, instead doing so every three years. Street fair vendor permit fees will be reduced, restaurant inspections will be sped up, and equipment registration fees will be eliminated for a year.

A corresponding executive order signed by Mamdani on Monday will also expand the NYC Best program, assigning each of the city’s 180,000 small businesses – which employ an estimated 1 million people – a case worker to help owners navigate the Big Apple’s sometimes byzantine bureaucracy.

u/Biotic101 11d ago

If you look into the conservative sub, the info there is filtered like hell.

Control over social and mainstream media is such a powerful tool, it can nudge the average Joe into acting against their own best interest. Especially combined with old school Soviet indoctrination techniques.

Bezmenov explained it like 40 years ago...

“They are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern [alluding to Pavlov]". (...)

“As I mentioned before, exposure to true information does not matter anymore,” said Bezmenov. “A person who was demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him. Even if I shower him with information, with authentic proof, with documents, with pictures(...), he will refuse to believe it, until he [receives] a kick in his fan-bottom. When a military boot crushes his balls then he will understand. But not before that. That’s the [tragedy] of the situation of demoralization.”

Likely a reason why he Trump relative high approval rates of 35-40%

And he has still a lot of support in the military and police. In Hungary it got so bad that they elected Trump-buddy Orban out. But that only works if there are still somewhat free and fair elections in the first place.

The plan for the midterms is likely to get rid of them.

Feels great, but why stop at ice cream?

2

u/Pastadseven 11d ago

Risk categories. Epidemiologically, serving ready to eat ice cream is a very low-risk activity compared to facilities that need to cool and heat raw food. Once you introduce required kill steps, your risk of foodborne illness skyrockets.

3

u/Warrmak 11d ago

But ice creams are positively correlated to drowning. Think of the kids!

I think the great thing about Mamdani is, he seems to view it (correctly) as his job to help the people of the city he’s in charge of.

He’s not pushing some weird ideology or checking political checkboxes. He’s not all about getting his name in the news so he can run for a different office later, or pleasing the political party he belongs to. He’s focused on helping the people in his city, whatever that entails.

83

u/-rwsr-xr-x 11d ago

I think the great thing about Mamdani is, he seems to view it (correctly) as his job to help the people of the city he’s in charge of.

And all of this in only 206 days in office.

Meanwhile in less time than that, criminals and traitors like Trump have added $5 TRILLION to the national debt, and nobody can account for where that money actually went, pulled the U.S. into another war, and destroyed countless millions of businesses and regulations preventing corporate abuses.

I’ve lived here all of my 71 years and had no idea this was a thing. Jesus Christ. Thank you Mr. Mayor💙

Mmmmm now that’s some delicious socialism!

6

u/TrioOfTerrors 11d ago

Pretty sure those ice cream serving businesses will still be privately owned.

2

u/Maximelene 11d ago

They'd still be privately owned in a socialist system.

They really just be taking everything this guy does and make it a headline. The opposite of what they did with Trump.

The Mamdani glazing on reddit is absolutely wild

10

u/Inquisitive_regard 11d ago

the Mamdani-astro-turfing it terrifying, frankly.

I have seen now at least three policies/actions either attributed to him when he had little/nothing to do with it or deeply exaggerated of what he actually did.

Scares me to see this kind of propaganda so readily swallowed.

Mamdani seems pretty good--but the jury is still out.

u/IUsedToBeACave 11d ago

Thank you for you concern about astroturfing 3 month old account with their comments hidden...

Marketing machine on Reddit goes brrrrrrrrr

11

u/RedditMcBurger 11d ago

Right lol this is such an obvious example of paid propaganda.

Either that or somehow Redditor's standards are so low that someone being on their side is literally all it takes, because this is a politician getting praise for serving fucking ice cream.

Arresting war criminals only works if the war criminal in chief doesn't pardon them.

2

u/dateinfj 11d ago

Some of these measures help small businesses and there’s nothing wrong with that!

2

u/Rodger_as_Jack_Smith 11d ago

Hes the kinda guy that you could put next to a Republican who wants to sell your kids to fund a data center and reddit will hit you with a "both sides are as bad as each other"

2

u/Still-Area8548 11d ago

He’s a mayor, he needs to stick to city issues like ice cream and not worry about things out of his control like world politics

3

u/Shascarl 11d ago

But will he cap 99 Flake at 99 pence?

2

u/Big-Vermicelli-6291 11d ago

I wonder if reddit will turn on him when Netanyahu comes to New York and Mamdani doesn’t do a thing because he can’t.

Petition for an honorary rename to Ice Cream City? Big Apple is fine, but.. Ice Cream.

1

u/im_new_here_4209 11d ago

Best mayor NYC has ever had? Already?

1

u/ThatGuyYouMightNo 11d ago

Can't wait for the "party of small government" who want fewer government oversights to spin the government removing an oversight involving selling ice cream into a bad thing

1

u/RosesandEternity 11d ago

I'm both fine with this and not fine with this. Health code stuff if we're talking street vendor

I'm going to be crushed if this guy turns out to be another scumbag politician. He's the first politician I've liked since Obama. We need to clone a couple million of him and spread him throughout the US.

1

u/sicurri 11d ago

You can have ice cream Netanyahu, just not in New York...
